Game Thread Spurs (6-2) vs Pelicans (2-6) (Sat 11/08/25) [7:00PM CDT]

Out of town not able to watch glad they won and Fox is back hopefully team continues to get better

At times ugly, but overall solid win. Great to have Fox back.

7-2..
Spurs back to the 2-seed in the west and have the tiebreaker over Denver (lol even talking about that this early in the season) so will stay there at least a couple of nights

So we don't need Fox, and everything is hunky dory with Wemby these last 3 games after he was dropping 35 a game the first 5? He's barely/not even scoring 20 now.
I really can’t stand him shooting so many three-point shots. I understand he needs to conserve energy to a degree but if he’s going to be all-time great, he’s got to get closer to the basket consistently. He’s not Kevin Durant.

It was nice to have a legit 2nd option back on the court, instead of praying for Castle's 3 ball to fall, or hoping the right version of Vassell shows up, etc etc etc. With Wemby's shot not falling, Fox can easily pick up the slack. Also, you don't need Fox or Wemby to score 25-30+ every night to have a solid chance of winning. If these TOSBs can finally have 3 or so consistent 3 point shooters, maybe a ghost of the beautiful game can return.

Good win, nice to see Fox have some early success and not have a rough outing first game back and that become a narrative. Wemby is traumatized from PHX, just needs to shoot his way out of it.

On paper it was closer than we would hope for, but with us on a 2nd of a B2B and NOP coming in with 2 days rest that alone is like a 15 pt swing I would bet. No more B2B's for us until December at least!

Does so much better when he does (plays close to the basket).

In my original mock i had him going #5 to wizards. I think he’s quite good. But yes that trade was very shortsighted
ROFL giving up two picks with real shots to be top 4 for fucking Queen. With the standings as they are now they gave up an I kid you not 76.79% chance at a top 3 pick to get Queen.

EDIT: Nevermind, that Indy pick was top 4 protected so knock 40% off that figure. Still, to trade that for the #23 pick ROFL.

Spurs back to the 2-seed in the west
Think OKC and Denver lockup the one and two seeds and then a scramble for 3-6 seeds..So far i have seen teams looking worse than expected giving us a chance to qualify straight to POs (Warriors, Clippers, Wolves all so meh after 9-10 games)

He doesnt need to shoot that many 3s, but he was obviously worn down and fatigued by the 2nd half. This was the 3rd game in 4 days and the first 2 were really physical for him.

The good news even when he's fatigued his defense doesnt disappear. He was still a defensive monster. That alone makes him one of the top players in the league, and with Fox, Harper, and Castle he doesn't need to put up 30+ a game for the team to win. He just needs to be efficient on offense and a monster on defense in situations like this.

Fox was obviously rusty but his offense when Wemby is slowed down is critical. He almost single handedly got that big double digit lead in the 2nd, and he finished the game with clutch plays to seal the win.

This team is better than I thought a month ago.

Denver's never really been a big regular season team so I think they're catchable. OKC though no fucking way unless SGA misses extended time.

I liked Queen in the draft. He's a really skilled player. Giving up that pick without protections is wild.
Yep but that game made him go from "insanely stupid trade" to "wild"

He has rare skills, he has a touch around the rim that reminds me Zach Randoph and his play making is off the chart for his age, the way he dealt with double team was surprising.

Very interesting post game interview by Fox… talks like he’s not a max player on this team and like his time here isn’t long…

Said something like, “i’m here to support the team and support Vic become the greatest ever”.

Hope someone can get a clip.
I also found that interview peculiar, came off almost as if he's just passing through.

Wemby 6/10 from inside the 3pt line
At this point it's almost as if every game will bring something different depending on how he's defended or deals with it.

There's nothing sure on the offensive side with Wemby, only on the defensive one, and that's all we should need for now.

I like the balance we had tonight, 8 players in dble figure.

They gave up two. They had Indy's 26 with only top 4 protection and traded that to get the pick they traded along with their 26 unprotected to ATL.

Great point. Guys like Gobert are still (or were) max players and Rudy is a still only a fraction of the offensive player Slumping Wemby is, and Wemby’s a better defender and rebounder than Gobert. Wemby will get back to form, it’s good to have the additional firepower in Fox back to pick up the slack while he’s in this funk.

Just noticed Castle with 14 assists :st-shocked:

Spurs seem to handle high pressure well this year. But they gotta close out a bit better and put certain teams away like the trash pelicans. Fox is gonna be key in a lot of these moments when we need a bucket or wemby tbh. More pick n rolls would be nice too.

He acknowledged the 6-2 start without himself and he was basically saying he wants to be additive to that. Mentioned Wemby being on a track to being possibly one of the greats. I didn't hear him say anything that made me think he felt his future here was short term. He did just sign a 4 year extension, I think he is just at the point in his career where he is established and the pressures of the next contract aren't a thing for a couple years.

If he gives us a handful of years of getting buckets like he did tonight then I would say its a good arrangement.

Here it is

“I’m just here to help them get wins”

Interesting choice of words…
Honestly seems pretty inline with what he’s been saying since he arrived. He’s been very differential in all his interviews and saying this is Vic’s team almost like he’s making a point to say that he isn’t the main character. This might come from the talk he had to endure in SAC, where is clearly was the main character but a lot of people held it against him that they dealt away Haliburton.

I hear this mostly as “humble vet” kind of talk rather than “I’m not part of the team” talk. Castle came over during the interview to give post game props as Fox was talking about how this is a team, I like that. I felt this of last years team, but I am feeling it this year as well: these guys all really like each other. It’s not just the friendship crew, they all really embrace each other as teammates (and I’ll add, your man KJ right in the center holding everyone in orbit with the supermassive gravity of that big body)

Joe Dumars was installed by the league to expedite the Pelicans' move to Seattle or Vegas, I won't be convinced otherwise tbh.
Sonics jerseys are legit some of the best, would welcome them back

And so it goes...........

Fox is magnificent!!!!!!!!!!
