Game Thread Spurs (21-7) vs Thunder (25-3) (Tue 12/23/25) [7:30 PM CDT]

Understanding that funeral plans may not have allowed for it, but I would have preferred Wemby fly out after the ATL game and miss yesterday's WAS game and be questionable for tomorrow and a definite go for the XMas game.

But I guess this way if we lose both of these games without Wemby we retain the psychological advantage (which I don't even believe in) that OKC still hasn't beaten us at full strength.

My not-so-far-fetched conspiracy theory is that Wemby flew to France and it is open ended on when he'll return. Maybe it will be in time for the game tomorrow, maybe not. Maybe he'll return tomorrow but be jet lagged and they'll just sit him. Or maybe he'll play. Or maybe he'll decide to spend more time in France and not even be available for the Christmas game. And for whatever reason the team and Wemby decided they don't want people to know.
I think it‘s that. He has a lot of awards on the line and can only miss 6 more games for the season. With how good the team is we aren‘t just talking DPOY, but MVP and All-NBA considerations as well. He wants that as much as anybody.

I'm glad you brought up the Player Participation Policy...

"Personal reasons" (births, deaths, etc) are a documented exception [Sec I. B (3)] in the policy (link: https://pr.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/46/2023/09/NBA-Player-Participation-Policy.pdf), so there really is no reason for the Spurs to play any kind of games to avoid consequences of the Participation Policy.

There is some wording in the policy that an injury is "bona fide" if the player misses the game immediately preceding or following the National TV game [Sec I. B (1)], so if the Spurs wanted to have Wemby miss the XMas game, it does help if he also missed the game tomorrow... but again, Person Reasons is already specifically exempted, so there is no reason for them to do this.

Or... maybe this is just legit load management.

Either way, if it is NOT truly injury related, then fans lose by the team simply not being more forthcoming. No one is going to to hold it against Wemby if he's going to his grandmother's funeral. But there are likely people buying tickets they might not otherwise (or at a higher price than) if Wemby were not playing. I just wish the Spurs treated fans (customers) with a little more respect.
the could just say Questionable - Personal Reasons and nobody would care

Honestly I'm really over the charade.

If he went to France to be with family totally understand and support it.

But the injury management tag line with Mitch's comments about him coming off the bench all rub me the wrong way. Its not cute at this point.

A who's who of San Antonio area most intrepid and adversarial journalists:st-lol:. Nice work guys getting to the bottom of Wemby's post-game MIA.. Guess it's personal reasons-cum-calf!

Unless the league is being a jerk about the definition of “family” and saying Grandmother doesn’t count.

If he misses the XMas game, it will be automatically investigated either way.

The "Personal Reasons" that have now turned into "Calf Injury Management" could have fallen under the Inconsistent Statements policy, but "Personal Reasons" was never any kind of official statement other than that dumb dumb E-N reporter.

My (again) not-so-far-fetched theory is the team told everyone it was going to be personal reasons and numb nuts wrote his draft before the team got the official talking points out with Calf Injury that everyone tweeted at the same time

Matt Tynan has since tweeted that there has been no set-back with the calf, the Spurs are just being cautious

^ 💯 agree on the family travel piece. Everyone would get that.

The injury rationale is bizarre. It’s also a major bummer since it falls around Christmas. I bet there are a number of families stretching themselves to buy tickets as gift for kids, so it’d be nice to give them all the info as soon as possible so they can make informed choices.

100%!!! This is what pisses me off most about the Spurs. The customer always comes last with them.

Spurs were at the facility today (Fox had some kind of Christmas event and Tynan was interviewing Champ). Will be curious to see if any of these brave reporters will even dare to confirm (or not) if Wemby was even at the facility today (my guess is they'll completely ignore this question).

I feel questionable is better than doubtful? Hoping he plays as it doesn’t seem he’s out due to the funeral

unfortunately as this one is not nationally televised it wont be subject to the player participation policy stuff.

if it really is for personal reasons, then by all means man, let the guy have a night. if its bullshit about the calf i really want the league involved at this point
The league can’t get involved in team medical decisions, nor should you want them to.

Kinda weird to call it injury management if it’s flight for a funeral honestly. Surely everybody wouldn’t blink an eye for the personal reasons.

If it’s actually injury management against the #1 seed when we are #2 it’s a bit sillly. What I wouldn’t give for the spurs to just be more fuckin transparent

Edit: I guess if it’s a REAL injury problem then I retract silly and replace it with really worrisome

I wanna see Wemby play on Christmas as much as anybody, but his freakin' grandma died and he seems pretty beat up about it.

If he misses both games, oh well. His family and mental health are more important in the big picture than sticking it to the Thunder again. We still got a lot of season ahead of us.

As for the "injury management" designation...who knows. Maybe they felt it was the easiest justifiable reason if he is physically available but just not up to playing (lack of rest, jet-lag, personal reasons...whatever).

It could be injury management for the travel weary (which folks who have had blood clots recently plus a calf strain recently could indeed be subjected to).

I should have known something was up when I came on here and this thread is already 4 pages :(. I hope everything is alright with him physically. I can understand mentally he's probably not doing great about his grandmother's passing.

Did you guys notices Wemby talking in Mitch's ear for a moment when he was last replaced?

Could be that he felt something
