Heading into today’s clash with Memphis, the Spurs were desperate to shake off last games Timberwolves-induced misery—a loss that might as well have been sponsored by their grueling road schedule since November 23rd. Still missing Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama, they faced a Grizzlies squad in overall disarray but still somehow cursed for San Antonio dating back to the Bonzi Wells and Pau Gasol pre- “grit and grind” era. Oh, they were on a 3-game win streak FYI.
Harrison Barnes lit it up for 31, De’Aaron Fox casually dropped 29 and slammed the door like the clutch machine he is (detractors be damned). The game stayed tight until the final minutes, when the bench showed up, Fox stayed foxy, and Dylan Harper rookie sensation/commentor-proclaimed future GOAT made sure Spurs fans had something to tweet about all night. Spurs sealed a late win on the first night of a back-to-back, but the real spectacle was hometown hero and TV commentator Sean Elliott surprising the crowd with impromptu mukbang, all while the new guy in the booth turned the broadcast into a one-sided romantic comedy with his relentless, unironic flirting. Now, on to the grades.
De'Aarron Fox B+ He scored efficiently, going 4-for-8 from deep, and his clutch free throws in the fourth quarter helped the team close out the game for a gritty and grimy win—see what I did there. Commenters will always comment, but Fox supporters can just flash a big grin and shout, “Scoreboard!” If I’m being picky, I’d say he could’ve sprinkled in just a tad more assist magic.
Devin Vassell C. Now this is a rock solid C. Devin shot adequately, wasn’t particularly good on the boards, and did nothing to help the Spurs from getting their asses handed to them by the mighty Grizzlies front court anchored by the super-sized Zach Edy. However, he didn’t let that familiar main character energy get in the way of Barnes and chipped in defensively in the 4th, just a smidge.
Dylan Harper B. This was a solid game by our rookie. He filled the box score with points and remains unstoppable on drives to the basket, but the best thing he did was respond to coaching. After being somewhat called out by Mitch last game for not rebounding or dishing out assists to teammates, he delivered 6 assists this time. Only 1 rebound kept this from being a B+ or A- performance.
Julian Champagnie C-. Julian shot really poorly and was almost ineffective on defense, getting dominated on the boards and in the paint by the Grizzlies for 3.5 quarters. Yet, along with Keldon, he contributed to the fourth-quarter win by grabbing five of his six rebounds to help close out stops and secure the victory.
Harrison Barnes. A+. Well, we’ve got a return of UNC in a cape—Super Barnes. He dropped 29 points through three quarters and kept the Spurs in it. The way this young team rallied around Barnes after the game, celebrating their vet, shows just how valuable he is in helping Mitch put his stamp on the future Spurs way moving forward. Commentors take note now.
Luke Kornette. C. Diamond solid C. He didn’t do much on the boards, but he set screens and got reemed on by the aforementioned Kaiju Zach. However, he delivered five monster-sized blocks for us, with three of those coming during the late fourth-quarter rally, including two right in the face of Zach. That performance saved Kornet from a D letter grade. Luke is a surprising 6-2 as the Starting Center in Relief of Wemby.
Keldon Johnson. B. To my eye, Keldon was kind of absent through the first three and a half quarters, but it was that Keldon energy that came bursting out in the second half of the 4th quarter that sparked the Spurs to victory. In that quarter, he grabbed 3 of his 6 rebounds. He and Julian helped keep the Spurs respectable in the paint during this stretch after having been mauled by the Kaiju Griz for most of the game. In a twist no one saw coming, he locked down the Spurs’ bronze medal in assists with four dimes—half of which went to the unstoppable Mr. 100% as UNC finished with 7 deep balls on 12 shots.
Jeremy Sochan C+. Solid Bounce back for our resident dumped upon player. He shot 5-6 over all for 11 pts 6 rebounds 2 steals.
Cater Bryant C-. He played solid defense, even though he couldn’t figure out how to grab any caroms against the Grizzlies’ super-sized frontcourt.
Kelly Olynyk and DJG. INC. Kelly and David didn’t get much time, so it felt incomplete. I reckon their lack of time is because they’ll get more playing time on the second night of a back-to-back. Let’s hope they both deliver.
Mitch Johnson, Solid B. Our young head coach made the right calls often enough throughout the night for the team to finally deliver and secure the win. Some lineups still seemed a bit questionable, but a win is a win. I can’t bring myself to give him a lower grade on the same day he was apparently the runner-up for NBA Coach of the Month, or so I’ve heard floating around online. With the team holding a solid .700 and many players missing time due to injuries, I’m just in too good a mood after this win TBH. How could I be CRUSTY after watching the team light up with smiles for Barnes during the post-game interview?
Edit: LOL I had Carter Bryant instead of Harper in my opening preamble...lol. I was on meds... sorry ...that's my excuse.
