Game Thread Playoffs Round 1, Game 1: Spurs vs Blazers (0-0) (Sun 04/19/2026) [8:00 CDT]

And on offense?
If they want to put a wing on Wemby (Camara?) as many teams do. Who is guarded by Clingan?
I think Wemby has outgrown the issue of wings guarding him.
And Clingan is too slow to guard anyone else.
We'll let the Blazers worry about that.

For all the handwringing over the playoff seeding on the heels of the saeson finale, this is a pretty solid outcome. Yes, Lakers in round 2 would have been a tasty matchup, but I may like the Portland matchup in round 1 more if it presents us with an easier path for our playoff virgins to get a series win under their belts. Hopefully Phoenix (or Clips) give OKC fits in the opening round too.

I hated them too!! The Rose Garden was one of the hardest places to play; those were some deep and talented teams. They have a great fanbase....I hope they get a championship one day, but just not at our expense. :)

It’s crazy that Wemby’s 1st NBA playoff will be against the same team that Sean Elliot’s memorable shot beat 25 yrs ago, which started Spurs’ many championship run. Here’s to Wemby and Co many championships run 🍷

Portland actually has a bunch of nice players on their roster but it never really felt like they coalesced and the whole feels less than the sum of its parts with them, on both ends of the floor. on paper they have very strong defensive personnel (Jrue, Camara, Clingan, Thybulle) but their team defense is not all that great. Offensively they also have nice pieces but they are one of the worst shooting teams in the league

This should be an easy win for the Spurs

I think we can say Suns/Wolves R1-R2 combo would have roughly the same degree of difficulty of likely Blazers/Nuggets combo we're going to face.

Sunday will be Wemby's first game against Portland since December of 2024 btw.

Clearly, he has been ducking them!

It's not like Portland and then Wolves/Lakers wouldn't have been an option.
Well it is as it is and if Nuggets give us our scars, it will be ok. We are ahead of schedule nonetheless.

My prediction: Sweeping Portland and being swept or gentleman swept by Nuggets (but with a lot of close games). --> ringing in 2027...odd year, you know?

Can someone tell me why we call Portland “The Guests?” TIA
way back in the day on ST, the blazers were having one of their cute little regular season runs at the top of the standings, and tlong made a thread entitled 'now that the blazers are the guest team in the west'
the typo became legend - it really was the perfect name for them - and it's stuck ever since

I keep hearing this, but the Blazers had the 4th best defense in the league post ASB. Top 3 in order were Thunder, Hawks, Spurs. The Blazers are a legit very good defensive team.

By contrast, the Spurs had the highest offensive rating post ASB, the Blazers 22rd. If the Spurs play to their potential, the Blazers should have a hard time cracking 110 points in any game.

Other potential Spurs playoff opponents, post ASB
Nuggets - 1st offense, 17th defense
Wolves - 21st offense, 13th defense
Thunder - 14th offense, 1st defense
Celtics - 6th offense, 6th defense
Pistons - 12th offense, 5th defense

Season long
Spurs - 4th offense, 3rd defense
Blazers - 20th offense, 14th defense
Nuggets - 1st offense, 21st defense
Wolves - 12th offense, 8th defense
Thunder - 7th offense, 1st defense
Celtics - 2nd offense, 4th defense
Pistons - 10th offense, 2nd defense

I disagree. :D
I don't think we need regular season records, that's done now.
And it reads [Game Thread] Playoff Game Thread, don't like that.

I'd say something like:
First Round, G1: Spurs vs Blazers (0-0) (Sun 04/19/2026) [8:00 CDT]

As far as the matchup goes, Blazers don't have the firepower and unless we're playing terribly this shouldn't take more than 5 games.
I don’t second guess a maestro’s work, I just let them cook

Got it, thanks! I remember Tlong but I must have missed that whole episode.

So I expect Wemby to start with some 3pt attempt in the first quarter of every games

He often does that when he is guarded by a slow big man
