News Spurs Media Day: 9.29.25

Damn I just realized this means that Dusty Garza was right when he reported on the hamstring injury in July :st-shocked:

Saw Mitch say something about there being an emphasis on D and Spurs want to make that their identity. Hope he's serious

so he feels like he can play now but it's already been determined he's going to miss games 30 days from now? i think he's just giving an optimistic soundbite

Yeah for sure. FWIW he also later said he was just running over 15 mph on the court the other day in comparison to the league best last year being 18 mph, and followed it up with “That just shows why I feel like I’m already ready to go. That 15 mph is faster than almost everyone else here” (paraphrasing here).

Not going to read too much into it but guess it’s at least nice that he seems overly positive about where he’s at currently.

man injuries are such a bummer. never a good time for them but better now then later i guess? idk.
for me its worse when the player gets in a groove during the season then gets injured. at least get the injury out of the way now (hopefully) and then come back and be healthy the rest of the year.

Hamstrings always worry me. He could shake it off and be fine, or it could keep flaring up and bother him all season. We saw the same thing with Parker in a couple seasons.

He was saying back then that his status for the entire season would be in jeopardy. It's still fuck Dusty

This reads like they’re banking on the first 6 games being gettable without Fox because of the soft schedule. If they end up going 2-4 instead of 4-2 then that could be pretty consequential in April.

That is why I expect the timeline of debuting early November has built in abundance of caution. Assuming that timeline is legitimate he would be ramping up/doing full contact for a couple weeks prior which would be mid October. The lamest part is Wemby and Fox had plans to work together quite a bit this off season and it is safe to say that didn't happen in any meaningful way.

Jeff McDonald announced on bluesky that they’re doing a special “Ask Me Nothing” session on Reddit where they decline questions from the fans and talk about their various hotel rooms and whatnot.
This guy still?

And bluesky is still a thing?

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge Fox fan, huge proponent of the trade, huge proponent of his extension...

But this fucking sucks and I hope it doesn't turn into exactly the same situation as with Devin last year where he underperforms and it is just blamed on coming off an injury/missing camp. This is two consecutive seasons that the Spurs have signed the largest contract in the franchise's history only to have the recipient of that contract enter the season injured.

I don't even necessarily have a complaint here... it just sucks.

Likely a heavy dose of copium, but he sounded like he was trying to send a message to the medical stuff during his presser. The whole 15mph thing felt, to me, like he was saying that he's in fine form to start the season and there's no need to act out of an abundance of caution (which is probably what the medical staff is doing/saying). That said, we needed him to have a training camp because he played 5 games with Wemby last season. You'd think that it would have to be enough of an injury to warrant him not getting those reps in/learning how to play with Vic. I would have been much more ok with this if Dylan wasn't also going to miss training camp (which makes me wonder when have this many players been injured during the offseason?)

to start the season, does that mean we see something like
Castle/Vassell/HB/KO/Wemby
Castle/Vassell/Sochan/HB/Wemby
Castle/Vassell/Sochan/Wemby/Kornet

What that does mean is that Vassell isn't leaving the SL anytime soon. Which is another unintended negative to these injuries.

I might’ve missed it during Harper’s presser, but have we gotten any firm indication of whether he’ll be ready for the season opener?

Harper being ready and getting an early opportunity to play big minutes to start the year would at least be a silver lining with the whole Fox situation. If they’re both out for the first few games that’ll be pretty shitty.

It's nice to have a pro like McLaughlin who has also filled in for Fox in Sacramento. He'll be a useful plug in the PG socket that will probably be needed for the first few games.

By the eye test, KJ looks 6'4" tops, Devin maybe 6'5" and Sochan a shade under 6'7". Maybe Devin's hair skews the perspective?

Fox getting interviewed now. He says that he feels great and feels that he could play now if he wanted to…but sounds like the medical staff is holding him out.

Pretty much guaranteed that he won’t be ready in preseason, and says that most likely won’t be playing opening night.

Kind of conflicting because he says they’ll go off how he feels, yet he says he feels great/ready to go right now but won’t be ready for opening night :st-lol:
as they should tbh. The worst thing that could happen is him tearing his ACL. You don't want that, so the Spurs being careful is absolutely right.

it's safe to say you didn't watch the interview cause Fox said he worked out with Wemby and Castle

Hence the word meaningful. I have no doubt they spent time around each other at the facility. Them being around each other and doing light drills is cool. But they really needed live action pick n roll reps in full speed scrimmage atmosphere to build familiarity and I doubt much of that was able to happen if any. Wemby got cleared to play basketball like a week before Fox sustained his hamstring injury.

Having Fox come back full speed is the most important outcome we need here, plenty of time for them to build cohesion still. Fox without the afterburners just isn't the same.
