A
rib contusion is basically a
bruise to the rib or the surrounding muscles. It usually happens from a direct hit—like taking an elbow, falling hard, or getting hit while driving to the basket.
What it means medically
- The bone itself is not broken (that would be a rib fracture)
- But there’s bleeding and inflammation in the tissue around the ribs
- It can be quite painful, especially with:
- Deep breaths
- Coughing
- Twisting or sprinting
That’s why it’s tricky in basketball—breathing hard and core movement are constant.
How long NBA players miss
In the NBA, recovery varies a lot depending on pain tolerance and severity:
- Mild contusion:
0–3 games (sometimes day-to-day, may not miss time)
- Moderate contusion:
About 1–2 weeks (roughly 3–8 games)
- Severe contusion:
2–4+ weeks, especially if:
- Breathing is painful
- There’s concern about hidden fracture or cartilage damage
