Game Thread Spurs (32-15) @ Hornets (21-28) (Sat 1/31/26) [11:00AM CST]

I'll cut Wemby a break on the stats because his min are still under 30 per game. Most of the elite stars are 33-36 right in there per game.. So 24/11 in 29 min in great on paper.. He would be right around 28/12 with another 4 min..
The issue is that he can't pace himself.
He's either doing nothing or winning the game by himself.

First half today: 4/1/1
Second half: 12/7/1

First half in Houston: 11/6/1
Second half: 17/10/2 with 4 blocks

Instead of coming out fully engaged, he gives a lot of his matchups a free pass and coasts until shit gets serious.
And that clutch switch can't be flipped at will.
Same goes for Mitch freezing out Fox and then expecting him to turn it on at will.

It has always felt like that, like any time the Spurs win it's because of overwhelming talent as opposed to a sound gameplan.
Today Mitch looked like he was letting the players do whatever.. NOT even anything being called out of time outs especially late. Just let the boys play fucking hero ball..

2 assists, yeesh. These fucks still don't know how to pass when they get into the paint. Doesn't gotta be to someone behind the 3 point line, just to an open man. They need to watch some of those clips circulating on social media about the Spurs of old and their passing.
Tell me you didn't watch the game without actually telling me you didn't watch the game.

Are you not able to watch/use something like the free streaming sites? I'm sure someone can PM you a link if you don't know of any and wanted to watch the games.

I shouldn't have watched the game. Wanted to watch it live, though. I'm not going to be able to go to sleep now and I have to work later today. Fucking great. I would have been a lot cooler with it if Dylan played in the 4th quarter after being the Spurs' best player up to that point. The media better fucking grill Mitch over that like they did back in the day when Boylen (was it Boylen) didn't play Kawhi to close out the game. I'd say Boylen genuinely forgot, Mitch, I'd say did it on purpose, but why? What is the reason, what is the excuse?
Just couldn’t watch with the time change is all, had commitments!

Jump ball Q on the critical jump with 30 seconds left:

Lonrzo Balls being allowed to plow into and dislodge Harry Barnes well before the ref tossed the ballup?

Standard NBA practice or is this Ball sitting on Silvers face, preferential treatment?

Harry Barnes with the untimely rookie level foul on the 3 pointer at 109-106. Critical.

re the bolded: I am not going to plant a red flag yet, but I have some real worries and questions in need of answers with regard to game intangibles every tier 1 ATGs possessed and whether Wemby has enough supply of that (unwavering focus and intensity, competitive want/desire in deeds not in words, BB smarts, etc..)

It's been a season long issue, not just one game. Expand your mind, little fella.
Harper's passing absolutely isn't an issue.
The issue is him being in the play finisher role rather than the play initiator in a lot of situations.

On the positive side, it should be noted that Barnes on the bench was becoming necessary. The problem is that he may be encroaching on Keldon Johnson and Harper, who are the usual driving forces with the second unit's offense.

Another positive point is that Castle has given up taking open three-point shots. The result: passes to better players and assists.

Champagnie and Vassel remain valuable and fairly consistent despite the latter's return from injury.

But when your franchise player messes up every other game and your star point guard is only a third or fourth option on a title-contending team, it's hard to be consistent in your results.

When the Hornets have a true two-way point guard, they'll skyrocket up the standings like Detroit. Diabate put in a huge defensive performance on both ends. He's exactly what a team playing in the early hours of the morning during a snowstorm needs, while Victor looked like he had just been released from Jabba's carbonite: a disastrous start to the game (no desire, no energy).

Victor would do better to spend his energy on defense to impose his presence on the rebound, show his presence in ways other than just deterrence, and on offense, stop fighting for position and shoot without pressure from the spots he's given... Why on earth rush and take so many long off-balance shots after battling against a smaller, stronger defender when no one is going to block you... I don't care about Giannis and Garnet: Victor needs to take inspiration from the fakes and footwork of Duncan, Dirk, KD, and Luka. He looks like an electrocuted eel every time he takes a rushed, off-balance shot.

I’ve mentioned this before, but Castle has to develop a 6 to 10 foot jumper. He leaves so many short. I really think it’s due to the thumb. And a teardrop is going to be a necessity for him.

usually I cool off by now after a loss but goddamn Mitch is a putrid coach. can’t even own benching Barnes, has to talk about getting Devin “in a groove”

of course he’ll never get pressed on his guard rotation & Wemby. clueless mfer

Performed a funeral and had lunch with my family, missing all but maybe 10 minutes or so of the game.

Anything outside of the usual happen for this loss?

so he can make free throws, but not a 6ft jumper because of the thumb? He's just not trying

We have a coaching issue on that side of the ball the offense at times makes the extra passes then they stop and go to hero ball a lot once they get big leads. I really believe the coaches need to start harping on this and make some changes on the offense. This is a fairly young team so I expect these ups and downs but we need the coaching staff to step up their game. That's my view on the subject

All of this. He talked about soaking up knowledge from Hakeem and yet nothing has stuck or sustained with the regard to applying these little big man fundamentals.

For a center at his size, his efficiency is below par and i don't think the lack of lower body core strength is at fault is as much his shaky instant action processing. Dirk/Nash weigh in tangentially on this..

Do you guys think Victor watches a lot of game film on his opponents? I don't think he does as he seems to get punked by some pretty average players. I think he just expects to go out there and outplay them on talent alone.
I believe he does just from all the communication he does on D. It's palpable and noticeable. He was directing the defense a lot to successful possessions.

Not for his shot profile, his efficiency isn't below par.

You really dislike him though, which is crazy to me, but to each their own I guess.

I really don't, man. But I'm grading him on a high curve, why wouldn't I? (The) GOAT tier prospect and you & I got to witness what persistent, methodical excellence of big man look like in Tim Duncan for near 20 years. The bar/benchmark has clearly been set for him.

Deep down, aren't you disappointed by his wildly inconsistent performances Year 3 into his career? The flagging (in-game) or game-to-game focus and intensity (The almost child-like obsession with the Holmgren match-up in contrast with the casualness and disinterest vs others? I'm just noticing stuff that i don't like so far. He hasn't suffered a major (structural) injury to explain the relative stagnation in some areas of his game including the intangibles side of it.

I wouldn't say I'm disappointed. He just eclipsed 150 games, is already a top 5 player and on a team where he has to be a floor spacer more than he should (which plays into his outside preference anyway) and as primarily a face up and jump shooting big, who doesn't live at the line, he's going to remain inconsistent offensively.

They've got fix the roster and he probably has to bang his head against the wall repeatedly in the playoffs trying to be Durant before he becomes more big man with guard skills than vice versa.

I don't know what the hell has happened to his block rate and defensive field goal percentage at the rim though.
