Game Thread Spurs (25-10) @ Grizzlies (15-20) (Tue 01/06/2026) [7:00 PM CST]

HB with the goods (regarding Wemby and the 65-game rule).

Translation:
"What matters most? A player's impact or just being present at every game? Last year, Victor dominated the entire League in blocks, and yet he missed more than 30 games. I understand the balance the league is trying to find: encouraging players to be on the court, to play, to contribute. But there's another balance to respect as well. Are we really going to nitpick over a player at 64 games, when he performed at a very high level?"

I was curious, so I went and looked it up… for the consensus “Top 5 players” (Jokic/SGA/Luka/Giannis/Wemby), only two are on teams with a positive Net Rating without them: SGA and Wemby. All of the other teams are negative without their Top 5 player on the court. So not only do OKC and the Spurs have Top 5 players, but they have also built good teams without them.

we have "survived" a terrible stretch of awful 3 pts shooting, we need to get back at converting at a decent clip asap tbh

Do you happen to know if this was also true for OKC last season? Trying to think if this will hurt Wemby's chances to win MVP in the future (though I'll gladly take a solid team over a seasonal award). Jokic is always very high on the MVP ladder as Denver seems to fall apart without him...

Mr. 100 needs to get his head out of his ass and play like he doesn't want his bad reputation to be cemented, tbh

He’s never really recovered from that two game stretch. He’s more inclined to drive now, and honestly, as badly as he’s shooting, I would do a short close out on him, cutting off his drive.

Yeah well he keeps getting hurt.. I cant' blame the Spurs..
Agreed. We are lucky that injury wasn't worse based upon how it looked in real time, but yeah...from looks alone, I'd be amazed if he is ready to come back at full throttle again (as much as I hate it).

We know Wemby is competitive and wants to be out on the court, but he may need to be protected from himself in this case. If the docs have cleared him, he obviously should play.

Edit to add: I'm glad Wemby is advocating for himself. I'd rather he be overly willing to play instead of being another Nephew...but decision ultimately ends with the medical team and I really hope this doesn't become a point of contention. Just because Wemby says "I want to play" doesn't necessarily mean he is placing blame, he truly just wants to be on the court and probably is frustrated with the way it's been going so far.

Memphis has always played us really tough, even this season. Coward being out helps but Morant has always been a Spur killer.

If we brick it up again from 3, this could easily be another L tbh.

If Wemby is as fragile as Manu was fragile, then he should come off the bench for the benefit of the team. That’s the whole reason Manu came off the bench, right? With how much he gave on the court, he would be prone to injury. My hot take of the day.

I thought Manu came off the bench so the 2nd unit had some firepower and someone to run the offense
