Game Thread Spurs (18-7) vs Knicks (18-7) (Tue 12/16/25) [7:30PM CDT]

My biggest takeaway after this game is that the franchise is safe even if Wemby turns out to be another Ralph Sampson.
Harper/Castle look like they could be a Harden/Butler duo and I'm not even over-exaggerating.
Wemby's way better than Ralph Sampson ever was and Sampson was screwed over by an incompetent Rockets team that rushed him back from a bad knee injury that he should have sat out the season for.

I disagree that they need a bunch of roster upgrades. This team is loaded with talent. They need seasoning in big games. That will come in the playoffs this season.
Not a bunch, but I think they desperately need an upgrade at the 4 position. Barnes is dog-shit and a net-negative player when he's not hitting his wide open looks, which is in basically every big game he ever plays in. He's mental midget and it's clear he's not the long-term answer.

I was asking him who he'd put out there that is already on the team to finish the game out. He didn't like that Mitch finished with Vic and 4 guards. I didn't see any good alternatives out there on who to play at PF tonight for what the situation was at the end. Spurs needed to score and hit threes to try and steal the win. The other guys like Julian and Harrison shrank out there. You could have tried Luke for rebounding, but no point really when he's not a threat on offense.
I'm still not buying these role players doing anything in a high level 7 game series.
Hope I'm wrong.
Been thinking the same thing. I just don't trust a lot of these role players. HB has been a great dude to teach, but he's not a playoff starter/big minute player on a team looking to win playoff games/series.

Short selling wemby would be a big mistake for any spurs fan. He can do it all, but we have a good team around him.

It’s not wemby vs the world anymore.

A well-deserved loss and good one in grand scheme of things. You need 48 minutes of focus & intensity in these type of games. Shooting woes aside, we didn't bring it and the Knicks wanted it more

right... which is why we were playing with harper and castle, notorious for their shooting...
Come on man. You can't be this stupid. Castle was one of the Spurs' best players tonight. You're going to bench him? Like get your hater glasses off. Spurs would have been blown out without Steph's hustle and play tonight. Sure, he's not a great three point shooter, but bench him and it's likely the Knicks guards score at will without him out there and there is no amount of threes that'll get them back in the game. Harper, no idea what you saw, but he was hitting his threes tonight. Both are a threat to get to the rim and score, pass, or even hit a 3.

You didn't even answer the question. Who would you have run out there instead of the 4 guards? I would have benched Victor before any of those guards (for tonight's game that is).

I just realized Harper out rebounded Wemby :st-lol:
It's dumb to single out a specific play or two, but their entire run started when Wemby half-assed a rebound, Clarkson jumped behind him and stole it. Went out of bounds off Wemby.
They made a 3 after that play.
If Wemby got the rebound we would've had an easy fastbreak and +12 most likely.

The Knicks making that final basket was textbook example of unethical basketball.
It was just incompetent, not unethical when the refs blew the call on Kolek and Kornet's tangle-up, giving Maestro a tech, then reversing the call and yet wiping out Champ's three. Same with not calling out-of-bounds when the Knick was standing out of bounds in the scramble after Harper's miss. Turning point in game, kept Knicks' run going.

A little perspective here…im laughing reading all the cliff jumping and doomsday panic…lol

1) barnes has been money all season and even champ has come thru…maybe both dudes just didnt click in this vegas arena, vegas rims, whatever…it happens…id say both have earned some grace and both will be solid contributors the rest of the season…

2) 2-3 weeks ago if you had told me the spurs would beat the shit out of the hated lakers and the hated thunder frontrunners and wemby would be back also? Id have said - “fuck yeah”

3) spurs have now played two full games with a healthy roster - TWO GAMES- and wemby is not back in game shape yet

4) the early season - where mitch allowed 8-9-10 player rotation was cut short due to this cup tournament…id prefer if mitch goes back to allowing carter bryant, sochan, djg , to see some limited minutes and continue that 10 man rotation..
It would keep everyone fresher and would hopefully morph into something similar to what the pacers did last year- which is play harder/faster for 48 minutes and wear out other teams…

5) wemby will be getting closer to real game shape fast and those two upcoming okc games are the real barometer

6) another bonus of the 9-10 man rotation was how different players stepped up on different nights and the wins were nice suprises by surprising contributions every game- and it became a beautiful team chemistry building journey which could really help in the playoffs…im not sure i like mitch reverting to pop’s style of shrinking the rotation and giving out more and more dnp’s …

7) knicks played hard and they earned the win and the spurs emotional high against okc drained them- it happens…
I would not worry too much about the knicks tbh- i cannot see any other team coming out of the east other than detroit…
And if we are lucky…maybe the spurs can get hot at the right time…

Long ramble over….

i'm saying your argument is faulty, not that i would have benched him. I was saying wemby makes coaches get greedy with small lineups and then results in conceding rebounds.

Had to watch the 2nd half delayed. I thought there was a point late in the 3rd Q where Mitch should have called a timeout. The Knicks were cutting into the lead and the Spurs needed to settle down.

Not upset at all at the loss.

The entire first half KAT was just camping in the pain for the entire possession on offense (What is three seconds?) and elbowing Castle to get position. Just absurd.

Brunson played 10 more minutes than Fox. Our second best player needs to play big minutes in a one and done game. Mitch fell into the trap that this was a regular season game. Also another example on why Keldon in the playoffs won't be pretty.

We desperately need an upgrade this offseason at the 4. Barnes has a reputation for not showing up in big games. Kings fans weren’t shedding any tears over trading him to us to get Demar. And there was a reason we got a pick swap attached to the trade for taking his contract. Overall he has been great for us and was a steal getting him and the swap for nothing. But when the Spurs take the next step to being legit year in year out contenders they are going to need someone else at the 4.

Yeah, absolutely. These are my thoughts that I've held back for a while now, but may as well say I've been thinking the same thing. Will the Spurs cut ties with any/all of them if it comes down to it?

i suspect they won't be shipped out before the trade deadline because 'that's not who we are' and 'they deserve a chance' etc. which is fine for now when they have no real expectations and will get the "they're not ready yet it's too soon" treatment after exiting the playoffs.

from next season offseason onwards though they'll have to get serious about using their assets to upgrade the forward spots if they're serious about contending in 26/27 which means beating three of HOU/LAL/MIN/DEN/OKC + one of NYK/BOS/CLE/DET/IND.

being true contenders means being ruthless and pragmatic with roster decisions. barnes/champ/keldon are ok pieces to have and a couple of them could potentially have some kind of role going forwards but i think we all know that forward depth just isn't going to cut it on a title team.
