Game Thread Spurs (17-7) vs Thunder (24-1) (Sat 12/13/25) [8:00PM CDT]

This was insane. Pure insanity. Fox is worth every penny IDC what anyone says. Spurs are down 16 with less than 4 minutes to go in 2nd. Fox pump fakes and lays it in, hits a 3, gets fouled and brings it within 10. In the second half he literally hit a 3, blocked Chet, and Wemby hit a fadeaway falling jumper. Insane 1-2 punch from these guys. Vassell again is worth every single damn penny. Silence yourself I don't wanna hear any arguments. He's a hound. If he gets unleashed whatsoever, he's hitting shots, IDC if it's midrange or 4/9 from 3 like today on huge shots, along with clutch free throws. Castle all of a sudden decided he's gonna hit 40-50% from 3. Him and Wemby just came back. We're chipping this year.

Going in to this game, I just wanted them to give a good fight and stay competitive. Needless to say, winning this game feels great. It also gives our young ones a couple of games where they get to experience playoff vibes.

Skip was a fake Spurs fan for years during the Tim/Tony/Manu era. Literally glazed them nonstop for 15 years. Now that Okc is good, he's jumped on their bandwagon and is now shitting on the Spurs :st-lol:. Fucking loser.

Why pay any attention to Skip Bayless? That's what he wants. His sports takes are terrible, intentionally or not. He's bad, but you give (get) him money by paying attention, just let him die silently. Please.

Great win and enjoying every minute of it. Wemby makes the Spurs 2 to 3 times better defensively. Personally, I can do without the smack talking. Let your game do all the talking- kinda the Spurs way. Other than that nitpick, best game in a long time.

The Fox/HB combo is simply great vet presence. One or the other or both will be there for a big play. When they're off, still "steady ahead" guys. We're not 'shipping this yr (sorry), but HB's teaching and Fox's teaching + prime output might get us there next yr!

Oh damn, the game is actually Tuesday… yeah. I’m going. @spurraider21 tell me about the ticket situation
i got today's tickets on stubhub

i actually cant go tuesday. one of my kids likely needs to get his tonsils yoinked, and im taking him to get a sleep study done on tuesday night lol

its alrite, i went to the one that mattered

If you reduce SGA to a mid range jump shooter and limit his play making OKC is sure to crumble.

Other thoughts:

Williams’ lack of size gets exposed against SAS which has been my knock on him all along.

Hartenstien + Chet two big lineup = YAWN

Harper not quite ready but watch out when he is

Vassell or KJ can each be more useful depending on the opponent.

Dort and especially Caruso can make some plays with their frenetic defense but they ain’t much on the other end. And if that’s their 4th and 5th best players that’s not very scary.
You being a little hard on Okc after just one game. They are the champs. Until we win the championship we better keep our head down and improve

wowza... got home to see we had a 74 page game thread

So fucking glad everything worked out such that I could go to this game. Some unorganized thoughts observing the game live, havent gone back to re-watch or whatever:

a) While evidently there was some buzz about officiating, i felt the first half woes really just came down to our shooting more than anything. We were just clanging wide open looks. Few bad forced shots, just couldnt get anything to fall. From the stands, it didnt feel like the officiating was taking the game over one way or another

b) however, the two reviews for flagrant fouls were absolutely asinine. i didnt like the offensive foul call on Harper, but the fact that they were considering a flagrant drove me nuts lol. seemed they were letting a fair amount of contact go on both sides. i didnt really understand what the offensive foul on SGA was after the Vassell block.

c) OKC was ok offensively, had 30+ in the first quarter, but they werent overwhelming. Shai was hitting everything but overall our defense was solid from the get go. They got some easy points on runouts from turnovers (expected against OKC), but if our defense got set in the half court it was a struggle for them outside of Shai

d) spurs defense was pretty great for the most part. gave up few easy shots to OKC after the first couple of minutes. Castle, Harper, Vassell, Fox... all did great work. Even Julian hung in there on some possessions where he got stuck guarding Shai. i felt bad for Castle on one of the last few possessions where he just absolutely clamped SGA for the first 22 seconds of the shot clock but then SGA made a pass inside and we fouled either Hart or Chet, cant remember which

e) didnt really seem like OKC's defense did anything special to stymie the spurs offense at all. the spurs turnovers really seemed like own goals more than incredible thunder plays, for the most part. castle put himself in compromising positions and was attempting frankly irresponsible cross court passes. harper was shaky with his handle, and wemby did some of the typical tumbles into turnovers. but we still were able to generate clean looks all game.

f) fox was frankly awesome in the 3rd, and vassell's shotmaking was there throughout. castle was consistent throughout the game with tough drives. his spinning layup which should have been an and-one was ridiculous tbh. he was sloppy with passses though

g) i did not expect wemby to look that good in his first game back. there was some rust and he was pressing at times (not unlike Castle in his first game back forcing the issue early). but he looked very crisp, wasnt bogging down the offense, and his impact was palpable in his limited minutes, especially in the first half when he turned the game around twice.

h) felt like a spurs home home. maybe a 65/35 split of fans.

bonus analysis from mrs. spurraider. she is not a basketball fan, knows next to nothing about the game, but wanted to come along and catch the game. her thoughts throughout:

a) she was effusively complimenting OKC's chemistry. described their game as being in a constant "flow" state. she loved the way they played, said its very clear they play well together as a team

b) she thought much of the spurs offensive woes came from hesitancy. thought they lacked aggression at times, players slighlty hestitating before shooting/driving was something that was irking her

c) she recognized that wemby basically had an aura of confidence about him that could be felt, and that his confidence spread to the team when he was on the floor.

d) she liked castle's aggression but said he was unpredictable. however she recognized his defense over and over down the stretch, noted how exhausted he looked near the end after guarding Shai

e) she realized Fox is the most skilled guy out there and that he was the steady source of offense

f) she didnt believe me when i said Barnes is our most consistent shooter and free throw shooter

wait is there really a narrative that Caruso's foul on vassell at the end was a phantom call? people in the stands were cracking up seeing the replay of him swiping down at vassell's arm given how much caruso was complaining.

in what universe is this not a foul? i dont understand where the controversy is on this play

No shit...after '14 I was convinced Skip is the major of San Antonio. I didn't know him (I'm from Germany) and well...he fooled me running around calling himself the major and SA fan.

🙃

Anyone noticed that Wemby was super vocal, attentive and calling out for his teammates on the defensive end today? Don't usually see this in his other games

Felt like shade of Draymond tbh.
That's what the team needs.

He can be one of the top offensive players in tbe league.

But no matter how good he gets on offense it will always be his defense that needs to shine brightest of all. He should be the most dominant defender in the game for his career.
