wowza... got home to see we had a 74 page game thread
So fucking glad everything worked out such that I could go to this game. Some unorganized thoughts observing the game live, havent gone back to re-watch or whatever:
a) While evidently there was some buzz about officiating, i felt the first half woes really just came down to our shooting more than anything. We were just clanging wide open looks. Few bad forced shots, just couldnt get anything to fall. From the stands, it didnt feel like the officiating was taking the game over one way or another
b) however, the two reviews for flagrant fouls were absolutely asinine. i didnt like the offensive foul call on Harper, but the fact that they were considering a flagrant drove me nuts lol. seemed they were letting a fair amount of contact go on both sides. i didnt really understand what the offensive foul on SGA was after the Vassell block.
c) OKC was ok offensively, had 30+ in the first quarter, but they werent overwhelming. Shai was hitting everything but overall our defense was solid from the get go. They got some easy points on runouts from turnovers (expected against OKC), but if our defense got set in the half court it was a struggle for them outside of Shai
d) spurs defense was pretty great for the most part. gave up few easy shots to OKC after the first couple of minutes. Castle, Harper, Vassell, Fox... all did great work. Even Julian hung in there on some possessions where he got stuck guarding Shai. i felt bad for Castle on one of the last few possessions where he just absolutely clamped SGA for the first 22 seconds of the shot clock but then SGA made a pass inside and we fouled either Hart or Chet, cant remember which
e) didnt really seem like OKC's defense did anything special to stymie the spurs offense at all. the spurs turnovers really seemed like own goals more than incredible thunder plays, for the most part. castle put himself in compromising positions and was attempting frankly irresponsible cross court passes. harper was shaky with his handle, and wemby did some of the typical tumbles into turnovers. but we still were able to generate clean looks all game.
f) fox was frankly awesome in the 3rd, and vassell's shotmaking was there throughout. castle was consistent throughout the game with tough drives. his spinning layup which should have been an and-one was ridiculous tbh. he was sloppy with passses though
g) i did not expect wemby to look that good in his first game back. there was some rust and he was pressing at times (not unlike Castle in his first game back forcing the issue early). but he looked very crisp, wasnt bogging down the offense, and his impact was palpable in his limited minutes, especially in the first half when he turned the game around twice.
h) felt like a spurs home home. maybe a 65/35 split of fans.
bonus analysis from mrs. spurraider. she is not a basketball fan, knows next to nothing about the game, but wanted to come along and catch the game. her thoughts throughout:
a) she was effusively complimenting OKC's chemistry. described their game as being in a constant "flow" state. she loved the way they played, said its very clear they play well together as a team
b) she thought much of the spurs offensive woes came from hesitancy. thought they lacked aggression at times, players slighlty hestitating before shooting/driving was something that was irking her
c) she recognized that wemby basically had an aura of confidence about him that could be felt, and that his confidence spread to the team when he was on the floor.
d) she liked castle's aggression but said he was unpredictable. however she recognized his defense over and over down the stretch, noted how exhausted he looked near the end after guarding Shai
e) she realized Fox is the most skilled guy out there and that he was the steady source of offense
f) she didnt believe me when i said Barnes is our most consistent shooter and free throw shooter
