Game Thread Spurs (14-6) @ Magic (13-8) (Wed 12/3/25) [6:00PM CDT]

People are stuck in the 2014 glory days. We no longer have a core of 35+ year old guys :st-lol: No reason anyone should be resting unless there is an actual existing injury concern.
maybe, maybe if they just played a double OT game and somebody like Fox/Castle played 44 minutes and we have a b2b and we can afford to rest one of them since we have 3 good lead guards, sure.

but these guys are all young. korndog is 30, but he doesnt play the most taxing style and he doesnt have much wear and tear throughout his career. and HB is the elder statesman at 33, but is Mr. 100% who hasnt missed a start for years.

but yeah if somebody tweaks their ankle or banged their knee hard and you want to give them a breather on a b2b because there is actual discomfort, please, go ahead

I haven't had a chance to look into the numbers specifically, but it seems like injuries across the league have trended up in the last few years. One of the prevailing theories for why this is is that players are covering a lot more ground now than they did 5, 10, 15 years ago as offenses have incorporated more pace and space and defenses have tried to adapt to match. Spurs have always been at the front of trying to be overly conservative for their players, and they probably feel that having a deeper team 1-10 and trying to spread the minutes out as much as possible is one way to try and fight the rise in overuse/soft tissue injuries from increased load and ground covered in the modern game. Just spitballing here.

orlando is a good squad but theyre not some juggernaut with overwhelming talent, especially with Paolo out (though there are already some rumbles of him not necessarily being a great winning player)

if it wasnt for this being the second of a back to back with tipoff being about 20 hours after yesterday's game finished, i dont think it would be all that daunting

I get the theory, and I'm not necessarily advocating for us to go back to the early-2000s days of playing people 40+ mpg for 82 games straight...but there has to be a middle ground IMO.

I think you're legitimately stunting the development of young players by only playing them 28 mpg for 65 games intentionally. I mean, look at Wemby. There have been several instances of him looking gassed in the 4th quarter and his play suffering because of it. That's an actual downside to him as a player, especially if we're talking about a potential playoff series against a team whose star player can give them 40+ minutes without issue.

At some point we need our key guys (Wemby/Fox/Castle/Harper) to be comfortable and able to have these big nights minutes-wise and not crumble down the stretch. Babying them and capping them at 30 minutes + resting them nonstop doesn't seem like a good way to develop that.

I know you're not advocating for that, and I'm not even necessarily saying the Spurs are guilty of this...but just my 2 cents to the whole idea of load management, particularly when it comes to younger guys.

This sets up like a schedule/blowout loss, but yeah no way should the Spurs be doing anything but trying to win it at all costs.

So how many games does Wemby have to play to be eligible for awards?

65.
This will be 9th missed game, meaning he's got 9 left. Probably at least 2 more after this one.
He can still do it if he stays healthy after he recovers.

They need to suit him up just to walk on the court, it'll be ridiculous is he loses out on another DPOY

I'm not sure how we deal with their inside presence without Wemby.
Kornet will get beaten up and will be in foul trouble.
We basically must have a great 3pt shooting game to have a chance.

Just like all the games without Wemby. The offense will have to carry the water, the defense just needs to not get torched too badly.

Lots of whining Tobey, suck it up. Back-to-backs used to be a normal part of the NBA schedule.
