Game Thread Spurs (11-5) @ Trailblazers (8-10) (Wed 11/26/25) [9:00PM CDT]

Thanks for stepping up @LeBowen

The Spurs should win, but if Mitch keeps running out Jeremy “Tragic” Sochan at point guard and relying on the not-so-point-forward skills of Kelly Olynyk, then we’re basically replaying the Phoenix game.

Um, a big standing at the top of the key with the ball isn't playing point guard. It's a swing position. The Spurs have run high/low from that for decades.

PG Sochan sucks but still probably better then Devin pounding the air out of the ball and then bricking contested 2 or passing hot potato in last 2 seconds for someone else to airball the buzzer. We really need Harper and Castle back as Fox can't do it all alone.

It’s not even his tendency to dribble the ball too much, it’s his lack of a first step that’s preventing him from doing anything with the ball. He can’t get past his man to save his life.

Watch their drives and cuts (Vassell and Sochan), both have terrible first steps and have completely abandoned any thought of actually getting by their defender. You can tell they are meekly going through the motion of a cut with no intention/expectation of it succeeding rather than actually attacking space or a bad closeout like Fox or Castle can do.

Well I guess the good news is that the Blazers don't really have any PGs right now either. Jrue and Sharpe are out with calf strains (shocker) and Scoot is on the shelf for awhile. I expect we'll see Deni, Sidy or Camera on Fox. This will be a good test to see if Fox's speed and quickness are back or if the Blazers can neutralize him with size.

Either way, we're going to need someone else to step up so that they can't completely scheme around stopping Fox.

It doesn't help that when Sochan actually manages to get by his man he frequently just stops and picks up his dribble for no apparent reason so he can pass the ball out and not try to score

i like when he drives in a circle around the paint but its because hes panicking and doesnt know what to do with it. i remember back in the day Nash would do that to torture defenses, but sochan is doing it to torture himself

Been saying it for years now.

Natural playmakers don't even need to think about it, they make decisions subconsciously on the fly.
Playmakers that were taught those skills have a few go-to sequences and a couple of scenarios. They pre-determine what they're going to do a few steps in advance.

Jeremy just dribbles into the paint with no plan whatsoever.
Opponents realized it and for a couple seasons now they're baiting him to dribble into the paint because they know his decision making skills are horrible and he'll fuck up more often than not.

But I won't even blame Jeremy for those situations anymore.
Everyone knows he shouldn't be handling the ball and he doesn't seem like someone who would ignore coach's instructions. Him having the ball is on Mitch.

When Sochan was "ramping up" back in late October Spurs media released a couple short clips of some 4 on 4 they were doing with coaches and Sochan did the exact same stuff. Just trying to move the ball, no real intention to score or create an advantage at all. Understandable then because they were just trying sets and getting back from injury...but now we see the exact same in game.

This play is fun, but I much prefer when he drives into the paint, jumps and then does a 180 in mid-air to try and find someone to pass to.

had more turnover than assists vs the suns

Kornet, Barnes, and Fox tied for team lead with 3 assists apiece

I can’t wait for Fox to actually start chucking like some have been calling for. I’m in the mood for some KOBE FOX memes right now. I can already sense people gearing up with the ENRIQUE De’Aaron Stew hero ball chowder for when the CLUTCH PLAYER of the year stops being so clutch. It’s just so predictable. To be clear, Fox won’t chuck, and I fully expect him to get back to his clutch ways. For all the hemming and hawing from his critics, situations like a Podz-whatever or that Broccoli-head guy going “sweep the leg” on Wemby have kept Fox and Wemby from even playing a dozen (the number is nine) games together.

good to hear. he last played on 11/02, so its been over 3 full weeks. the initial reports didnt give a specific timetable but the expectation was always "a few weeks" or "muliple weeks"

2-3 weeks is the typical time for a grade 1 calf strain, so this all tracks

he and Fox have yet to play in the same game together

Good news about Harper..So happy for him considering how grim it looked when that injury happened. He is probably ready to go but they will make a final evaluation after the morning shootaround.

This makes me hopeful about Wemby's timeline falling on the short end since his calf condition was more a case of tightness than a low-grade strain..
