[This is the first edition of what I'm hoping will be the format of our grades going forward. Please do let me know in the comments if you have thoughts on how to improve this. I'm not intending to do comprehensive write-ups on each player, but just a quick summary like this]

Spurs 133 - Pacers 104 | Spurs finish the Pre-Season 5-0

The Spurs closed out the Pacers and the Pre-Season to finish 5-0. You normally don't like to read too much into the pre-season, but the Spurs looked impressive and cohesive, even with De'Aaron Fox not in the rotation yet. Throughout the Pre-Season, opponents generally played their top guys longer than we did, but our backups were able to close out games. I'm very optimistic going into the tip-off game against Dallas and I can't wait to see how Fox integrates into the lineup. I'm also low-key excited to see what dimension Kelly Olynyk adds to the rotation.

My Thoughts:
  • Victor's shot selection has taken a significant leap and it is apparent in the box score. He shot a blistering 66% for the preseason. He's still making some HORRIBLE turnovers, but other than that he appears to be molting into an evolved form that is perhaps more terrifying for the rest of the league than anyone may have imagined. I'm so excited to see him against top competition and with the full complement of Fox, Castle and Harper running with him. One big question will be where his 3PA/gm settle out. Only 2.0 in pre-season.
  • Julian looks like our starting 3 to me. His .633 3P% isn't going to hold up... but he's exactly what we need in that role.
  • Korndog... what a pickup. Homie is much more impactful and efficient on offense than I think any of us were expecting, and it's awesome. He's going to quickly become a fan favorite as well.
  • I generally liked what we saw from Devin in the pre-season. I was surprised that I was that much higher on him than the Community in the finale versus IND. He was a team high +25 and was making smart decisions even if the shot wasn't falling.
  • Steph is looking good, and he shot .375 from 3 on 4 3PA/gm in two pre-season games... if that's real, look out!
  • Tough finale from Dylan, but he showed us some good stuff this preseason!
  • I like the fire Mitch is showing, especially over defensive lapses. More of this please.
  • Am I the only one who would rather give Micah Potter a chance as deep bench big over Bismack? (Though, tbh, Bassey got waived by ATL... bring the prince home!)
  • Black Falcon had a rough pre-season, but I liked what I saw in this last game. He's our 5th option, we don't need much out of him than this (Except maybe some rebounding... please)
What You Are Saying
  • @spurraider21 - Vassell: He defended well but had the bailout fall against Seakam. He made smart decisions with the ball but did hesitate once and wound up traveling as a result. Struggling with his outside shot. He really can’t put his game together right now but the outlines are there
  • @spurraider21 - Castle: Not much more you could ask of him. Pressures the pacers defense all game. Made terrific pass after pass. Tough skip passes with zip. And he was solid defensively.
  • @NotoriousHOP - The shine wore off a bit on the Spurs new players (Kornet, Harper and Bryant) with some sloppy starts but luckily, they were all able to do something positive in the last few minutes of their play.
  • @NotoriousHOP - I like that Mitch gave Castle and Harper some burn together but I'm not sure if Harper deferred to Castle or if Castle seized the power of his incumbency to lead the action. Castle was very vocal and aggressive in a way that kept the momentum going the Spurs way.
  • Unnamed Grader - DJG to all: Micah Potter rained threes and posterized anonymity in my stint. Micah!
What were your thoughts on the game?

Great write up! Given the amount of work this likely took you, no one would blame you if you decided to do these in 5 game (or even 10% of season) increments.

Obviously this one is just a test, but I think we should keep the GAME GRADES topics pinned for a day after the game and have it as sort of a post-game analysis topic.

Wasn't able to watch much of preseason, buy what I did see looks like they shot the ball well as a team. As long as that continues they will win games. If they go cold for extended time like they tend to do the last few years they'll drop a lot of games.

Last season the Spurs had both the top defensive 5 man lineup in the league and the worst defensive 5 man lineup in the league. All pretty much dependant on Wembanyama being on the court. Kornet being a defensive stopper is probably the most important aspect in going from the 25th ranked defense to the top 15.

It seems like nitpicking but think the time has come for H. Ingram and R. Minix to simply be G-Leaguers, give the two-way contracts to some other prospects, while those two have improved, it does not look like they will be on an NBA roster in any sort of effective way. I am not sold on Potter either but man, the rotation guys are looking solid.

autocorrect from my phone was brutal lol

This is good stuff. Can you let us know how many graders there were?

This team will be really tough to guard. We got a bunch of players who can bully their way inside with solid footwork. Not just Wemby and Castle, but Keldon, Harper, Vassell and Fox ain't even back yet. Daring this team to shoot 3s and hoping they miss might be your only bet trying to stop them from scoring.

Wemby getting to Shaq like efficiency inside is what I want to see. He's a little too unselfish though which results into turnovers.

Our G-Leaguers straight up destroying other teams second and third stringers is kinda crazy.

There were some really cool sets being ran. The Castle/Vassell give-and-go that resulted in a Barnes corner 3 and the McLaughlin to Keldon drive to close out the 3rd quarter for example. Loved those.

I feel we lack just one long wing (hopefully Bryant is that guy 2-3 years down the road) to have personnel that can match up with anyone.
Teams can't outrun us because we can go small with something like Fox/Harper/Castle/Champ/Wemby.
After big men additions, we shouldn't be bullied anymore and we can easily play something like Castle/Champ/Barnes/Wemby/Kornet.
(And many more combinations, I'm just making an example.)

Third string additions won't be insignificant because most teams shorten their rotation if an injury crisis happens, while we have McL, DJG, Waters, Bryant, Olynyk and Biyombo as 11th-15th man on the roster.

I'm also interested in what Olynyk can bring to the rotation. A solid stretch 4/5 would really round out this team.

Don't know where Sochan stands in his development as we haven't seen him play at all but I assume he still has the backup 4 role. A big rotation of Wemby/Kornet/Sochan/Olynyk would have some great versatility.

Agree- the ko signing is being overlooked but a champ/ Kelly/ Wemby front court gives us a much better chance at competing with teams from the perimeter

Thanks for the writeup ... good stuff. Are the Spurs the only team that played their healthy guys in all PS games? Any time I watched a game recap from other teams these were resting main rotation players. Really different approach from Mitch compared to Pop. The intensity both from players and coaches is nice to see.

With regards to Wemby, he has to shoot more threes which automatically will reduce the TOs again. But hopefully not as many threes as last year ... of course if he is hot from the beginning than keep shooting!

Lunch Lady didn’t sign, he was acquired for two players that the Spurs were widely panned for optioning for year four: Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley.
