I've watched Cedric Coward's ROY odds go from +4000 two weeks/a month ago to +800 today. If the odds were based strictly on performance and actual impact without the factors of reputation and early predictions, I think he'd easily be the favorite right now. He leads all rookies who've played significant minutes in WS, WS/48, BPM, and VORP, and he leads Memphis in On Court +/- at +1.6 and On/Off +/- at +14.5... Ja Morant, JJJ, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Santi Aldama are all in the negative in both of those categories, and Memphis is 4-7, so CC doesn't have the built in advantage of playing for a winning team.
Even more interesting (from a betting perspective) is he's currently at +10000 for 6th man of the year, meaning a $10 bet wins $1000. That's a great low risk long shot bet.
If I'm Memphis and Coward is still producing like this come January, it makes a Morant trade a lot more palatable, even if he is still popular with the city's street cred crowd. Memphis ain't winning a title with the current team composition anyway, and the quicker they get really get ready for the future the better.
