Jordan on that list is literally the only all-time great defender and all-time great scorer. You could also say Kareem, but he didn’t win until magic showed up. Just the one chip.

Tim Duncan is an all-time great defender, he’s not an all-time great scorer. He was elite offensively in his prime.

Magic Johnson was an all-time great assist man who didn’t play great defense. Not a great all-time scorer.

Bird had some big seasons in terms of points per game, but again, not a great defensive player, so he didn’t go two ways.

Joker has everything you want offensively but not a defensive big man.

Giannis has put up some big numbers, but just had the one major run. His teams have been pretty lousy in recent years.

We have a great two-way basketball player who is not fully formed yet. A lot of the load managing was because he was coming back from an injury. And we don’t need him playing 35 minutes in a blow out victory. Once again, if you are trying to angle for him to ever be in that greatest of all time conversation, forget it. Michael Jordan owns that house. He’s not moving out.

So it means wemby can avaerage 28-30ppg while winning MVP and title, if not now atleast starting next season. Not by your logic saying that the only way to win is playing the BS spurs way, only play 30 minutes or below, ignoring individual accolades, only scoring 23ppg, letting scrub players carry you to a win,etc..Right?

I didn’t say you could only win a championship playing the “Spurs way” But do I think he’s going to consistently average around 30 and win a bunch of championships? No. Because nobody in history consistently averaged 30 while playing elite D and won a bunch of championships except for #23.

Also the players putting up the big numbers have coaches deciding to run the offense through them. I don’t get why it’s a problem if Wemby isn’t putting up godly offensive numbers.

The dude has bent the floor on defense like never before; listen to Zach Lowe’s last two pods, he mentions it several times. He said Wemby would be his mvp due to his effect on the defensive end.

Exactly and deferring to teammates is not a San Antonio Spurs system or strict philosophy that they only have. That’s called playing winning basketball.

Yes i dont like the current spurs system because it prevents franchise player from winning individual accolades like MVP. And also thats what you’re saying. You keep saying , which one you like a player averaging 30ppg but got bounced in 1st round or a player with 23ppg but win title.tbh

To answer your question, i want a player that is playing elite offensively top5 in scoring, winning MVP and ofcourse winning NBA title. I want wemby to be like that as a player.

Really winning basketball? Where are the spurs during derozan , white and murray era? They have spurs system right? Why is that team a 7 seed at most and a 1st Round exit team?
 
At present Vics main contribution to the team is on the defensive end. I have never seen a player, and I been watching ball since the 80s, that has had such a impact on defense like he does. Its not only the blocks, its the altering of shots, players just not shooting period in his presence. How many times have we seen a player drive in just to dribble out, take a bad shot, or pass out for a bad shot. Thats all Vic. He can obviously have monster games offensively as we seen him have but I don't think he needs to do that every game for the Spurs to win. We've seen that already. The way I see it is with his defense if he gets 20+ points a game thats a bonus not necessarily an necessity. The Spurs have a real good squad with about 4-5 players who can go off any given night. If Vic has a bad game on offense or doesn't average x amount of points a game its ok because of how good the team is. What the Spurs can't afford is Vic being bad on defense.

you'd better get used to the fact that Wemby might never average 28 PPG. If he scores 22-24 PPG and be the monster he is in defense, that's great. That means that other players also have to carry the load in offense and the Spurs are building the team for that with Fox, Castle and Harper. Vassell and Johnson are also doing great in that department. In my opinion, we need a starting PF who can rebound and defend to help Wemby waste less energy going after every block shot and rebound.

You can't be OK with that if you actually think he's the most impactful player in the league. Don't care much about him leading the league in scoring but as a fan you can't seriously be OK with one of your guys being the best 2-way player and not getting the credit he deserves, especially if the team is winning.

In my opinion with the combination of amazing offensive skill and amazing defensive ability Michael Jordan is the only guy to do it in NBA history while winning a bunch of championships. Winning 1 like SGA is great, but can he do it consistently? Hopefully not if we have something to say about it. I don’t put LeBron James in Michael Jordan‘s class at all and that shit ain’t even close. LeBron was putting up numbers, but he couldn’t win anything until he built the super team in Miami. And still didn’t win all that much.
