Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

The difference in his game was obvious. If I recall correctly, no 3’s in the first quarter for him. Last year he would have taken 5 in the 1st.

We all knew he needed to play down low but yet he felt that he needed to live at the 3 pt line.

I always noticed in his interviews how he emphasized not doing things like a traditional big man would and it seemed like that translated to him playing like a guard or Kevin Durant ball.

But now that he’s added a post game with footwork and playing closer to the basket, his game looks great and easy. Who woulda thunk??

It is one game but yes evolution is noticeable. Victor focused on the physical aspect during this long offseason on two aspects: 1. stamina and 2. strength. Both aspects help him to feel confident to go more inside and rely less on the 3s.. some of the 3 pts attempts of last year seemed to be also a way for him to preserve energy after working on defense.

Now as I said in another thread, it seems he can switch play style at will... inside out, 3s, long 2s, close to the basket, ball handling... from 3&D guard to Center play maker ala Jokic to Tim Duncan to KD. I think he is trying to develop everything so that he can adapt on each every game. More importantly he will be huge headache to prepare against.

I expect a full super saiyan form in a couple of years

All good points. I really like Wemby’s drop step fade to the baseline, using the glass. He can almost get that shot anytime he wants it

Yes, this exactly. It's not like the folks clamoring for Wemby to play more in the paint knew something Vic and the coaching staff didn't. His body just wasn't ready so it made sense to develop other aspects of his game. Now that he is starting to truly dominate inside and has unlimited three point range in his arsenal, we will see the real Victor Wembanyama emerge.

Geez. Chandler Parsons is on the train hard. He's blown away. Just one game, though, and people going a bit crazy so far. It was a GREAT game, but just one game. Keep it going.
I do like Chandler's point about Victor dominating the whole game. On offense, on defense, he did it all out there, and he did it against really good defensive big men. The zero turnovers (as TDomination mentioned) was also amazing. I think it was just a great game where nearly every play felt like/was a highlight. That is what made it crazy.

just to be that asshole to nitpick, early in the game when he hit that jumper moving to his left, i thought it was a pretty clear travel he got away with. i counted 4 steps after his last dribble, so even if you give him the one gather step, still was a travel imo
No different than when lil steffie (and a few other 3 pt shooters) takes two steps and then shuffles backward 2 or 3 more steps to get behind the 3 pt line and nothing is ever called - but if you slow it down it is 4-5 steps after the dribble - ("step back" three)

getting ready to re-watch the highlights

three years ago, I saw Wemby play in the G League/Mets matchup in Vegas. I remember thinking that this fucker was going to change the fate of some lucky ass franchise, and I tried my best to downplay how good he looked because I was convinced that that team wouldn't be the Spurs. Last night reminded me of just how different this dude is and how damn lucky we are to have him.

Oh yeah, I remember doing heavy scouting of Anthony Black, Cam Whitmore, Taylor Hendricks, because deep down it felt unreal to land Wemby, naturally it had to be one of the others. Same as this year, I watched a lot less of Harper, VJ, Ace than the guys projected mid to late lottery. Wasted time never felt so sweet :st-lol:

You seem unhinged. You’re creating straw man arguments in your own head and talking about magic. Take a break.
Lol, you know I'm far from an unhinged poster. Why are you so scared to elaborate on your position and talk basketball? Re: the magic comment, did you seriously not understand that I said "magic" as in pizazz, flair, hootzpa, etc? Can you quote my comment and tell me seriously that you thought I was invoking the arcane in talking about Wemby's playstyle?

I'm smelling a lot of bullshit coming from you, what can I say? No amount of breaks is gonna make your comment seem better. I literally quoted you, twice, to be precise with my meaning.....

Anyhow, did you watch last night's game? Wanna talk a little more about Wemby's ball-handling ability, how he just cannot dribble through traffic without getting stripped, etc? Or are we just forgetting all that? :st-wakeup:

One of the most impressive parts of Victor's game was the fact that he dead swished several of his midrange attempts, even the contested ones and the and 1 he got against AD. Add in those two one-legged floating bank shots from the left side and it shows how immaculate his touch is.

You can't put anything past this guy. He could become a 2024-2025 Jokic-level 3PT shooter (41.7%) and it wouldn't be a surprise at all.

His jump shot has always been a battle of him vs himself. I think he was genuinely working with the monks on tapping into his flow state on command. If he’s effectively unguarded all the time and he’s a hyper skilled athlete, his makes and misses are up to his mental state.

I think that was what made Kawhi so elite on offense so quickly.
Once he got the mechanics down, his odd brain wiring allowed him to not care who, or what guarded him. He was shooting care free, so to speak.

Windhorst saying the Spurs finally got through to Wemby that he should play like a bigman instead of trying to be a guard.

Honestly, with Victor, there’s no such thing as a contested jumper.
