Let's have a funny meme, haha

I'm kind of interested in targeting his twin brother now for the 15th spot on the bench, but mostly because it would be a great story.
I agree. I think Justin just needs a better environment than a blatantly tanking and structureless team to thrive. He is also a undersized PF/ SF with some shooting chops( having a down year this season but shot 38% last year). But he is productive because he has a high rebound rate and hustles. Could be an upgrade over 2025-26 version of Sochan, I think.

2 for 13, hell of a New Year's hangover comedown for the lad
Shooters gonna shoot! And he’s a cold one even especially when the game is on the line, and that’s how you like them. I’m not going to say Klay Thompson but why not? Very good defender, even better ball handler

He’s beginning to figure out the ways he can contribute to the game if his shot isn’t falling. Was actually 2-8 from 3 tonight but still got double digit rebounds and that clutch block on D White.

Please let him continue starting when Vassell is back and bench Barnes, please.

How many shots did he take in the second half last night? Seems like we completely went away from him for a long stretch, and then he got blocked on a couple of corner 3s

He was cold, had some bad misses.
2-4, all 3pts in 3rd and 0-3, 0-2 from 3pt in 4th.

I was upset with some of those shots he took, but I'd have to go back and watch. I don't think he got a lot of clean looks in the second half. He bailed the team out in the first half, and I'd say Houston made a point to not give him easy shots in the second half. I was happy with him for the most part.

Champ might be playing his way out of our price range, good for him.

I'd frankly deal Vassell if it meant keeping Julian around. His durability and rebounding is pretty damn valuable.

Barnes/Olynyk/Sochan are making $40M between them, we can easily pay Champ unless someone offers a dumb overpay.

Thankfully we're immune from a gross overpay for at least one more season. Julian either excepts a decline-and-extend this summer, or he plays one more year on his peanuts deal and tests FA in the summer of 2027.

I think we'll secure him on a Santi Aldama-like deal. Santi is on a declining 2+1 deal (club option) at 11.95%, 10.25%, 9.76%

he has truly found his niche. he's not a very good defender... the lateral quickness and change of direction simply isnt there. but he's making a big impact on the defensive glass and that goes a long way too. its particulary important when our defense funnels guys inside and wemby/luke have to get out of position to fly over and contest a shot. rebounding from the forwards is crucial

now he's not a forbes level of defensive liability... but he's definitely the weak link when it comes to perimeter guys. at least he has moderate size so he's not a pushover

so something starting at around 20 millions/year? What do you think about Barnes? let him go?

So, if the Spurs exactly mimiced Santi Aldama's deal, it would be a 2+1 for Jules valued at $55,568,500 with $37,702,750 guaranteed. By comparison's, Santi's deal is nominally $52,500,000 with $35,492,959 guaranteed.

Year 1: 19,837,000
Year 2: 17,865,750
Year 3: 17,865,750

What would everyone think of that? Maybe we try to shave off a mil or two? Santi is certainly more proven (in that he's been at his current level for longer, whereas Jules has only recently been emerging). Maybe same structure but 3/48? Either way, I wouldn't be mad at the 3/55 either. Jules is a bad ass dude who has worked his ass off and I'll be happy for him and that deal fits nicely in our future cap sheet.

As for Barnes? I think we probably bring him back on a value deal (like 2/16) to be a Bench Unc. If he wants more than that, maybe we just let him walk... but I feel like HB is a pretty unselfish guy and likely knows he's seen his last big deal.

To me the bigger question is Keldon's extension, which he is due for this summer as well.

I think I'll take this conversation over to the Future Cap Sheet thread, because Jules emergence definitely raises some questions.

Where is the line drawn for Elite Role Player? I'm sure Champ is not there yet, as there's plenty of room for improvement, but I expect he will continue to ascend. Converting him to a 3/$40M might be tough to negotiate soon (personally, I'd jump on it tbh). You gotta believe he's fully aware of the $19M Unc is reeling in. If Champ blows up in the playoffs, he's got leverage, and lots of it.

I'd say Derrick is an elite role player.
Had a significant drop off in efficeny now that he's the second option, but he'll go back to his usual level as soon as Tatum returns.
If we're talking wings and the 3-D type we need, I'd say McDaniels and Anunoby are the two I'd like to have the most.
But Anunoby is overpaid at $40M, while McDaniels is great value at $24M.

I'd say Devin's contract should be the ceiling for role players. About 15% of the cap.
It's just that we won't be able to afford those if both Castle and Harper get 25% extensions, even if we let Fox go.

Champ improving his rebounding is huge value for us. If this is his current level and not just a hot streak, I think 17 to 20 a year would be fair value, scott mentioned Aldama having a similar contract.
