If he can start hitting 3s in games that matter on the road, then that'd be awesome to see (both for him and the team). Really played a great game last game. It was absolutely needed with the Spurs being shorthanded, so props to him.

that's sort of how danny green evolved. he was shaky on the road early on but when he started to hit big shots on the road, his value rose to another level.

25/10/2/1/2
6-15 FG, 3-9 3PT, 10-10 FT

As I wrote before, I think we should negotiate an extension a year earlier.
Have him decline that option and give him 33/4 instead of 3/1+10/3.
Or maybe it becomes 50/4 considering the way he's been playing.

But it would be good to have him on a descending contract that starts earlier since we'll have extra money next season.

His size at the 3 really valuable on both ends. Needs to stay in the SL when everyone’s healthy.

Don’t want this taken the wrong way… but I think Champ’s performance and Devin’s shows why Champ should start over Dev.

Champ has been great, but more to the point Devin has been doing a great job as a lead scoring option, not as a 4th option catch-and-shoot guy. He’ll be better suited allowed to feast on bench units. He can be a 6MOY type guy for us.

Champs rebounding is huge. When he’s not on target, he can impact the game more than he has in the past. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Vassell doesn't seem mentally strong enough like he could handle being benched.

I was on benching his ass for Champ but with his recent play, I think you need to keep feeding him especially early on in games.

Don’t think it has anything to do with benching/mental toughness. The reality is that the spacing in the SL is sooo much better when Dev, Champ, and Barnes start with Fox (and eventually Vic). The tough choice for Mitch will be what to do with Steph when he’s back…

Feel like this should be Castle and not Dev. Castle has the best synergy with Kornet and has that lob pass with Kornet down pat that opens up the rest of both of their games that Ive yet to see consistently elsewhere, especially with how aggressive Castle has been looking for his own shot to start this season. Long term Castle is too talented to bench but I see it as the best option this season.

A second unit of Castle and Kornet when Wemby sits is way higher value than bench leading option Dev and allows for Wemby and Fox to have 3 shooters in Dev Barnes and Champ to let them do their thing.

Just watched the game. Julian and Devin playing huge on the road. That is great to see. Super impressed with their performance in last night's game. I have no idea who should be starting, though, when everyone is back. Really tough call. Both are playing well.

Champ has always been a better rebounder, and finds ways to contribute whether block-chasing, scrambling for a 50/50, slamming dunks. He’s a super role player the Championship Spurs always had whether it’s Horry or Danny Green, and now Champ!

I like your thinking here... my only concern of course would be that Harper/Castle/Keldon become too redundant with the bench unit and their strengths kind of nullify each other... but I agree that your starting 5 would be quite nice.

In the end, I think we'll see heavy staggering and this won't really matter. I just hope we don't see what happened last year is that Champ performs really well but then guys come back and his minutes dry up. He's earned a solid spot in the top 8-9 of our rotation!

For the first time in his career his advanced stats have gone positive.

ORtg: 118
DRtg: 113
WS/48: 110, up from 62 last year.
BPM: +.02, up from -1.3 from last year

Granted he's playing with a much better team which helps but his game look a lot better.

What is the max extension he can sign if the last year of his contract is 3M? Assume this keeps up, I suspect it’s not in his interest to extend next summer right?

He's not getting close to the max extension.
I think it's in his best interest to get paid because you know how it goes in the NBA for role players, one injury and you're done.

I agree, don’t think anyone is backing up the truck. Maybe I’m misinformed, but thought the most he could extend for is tied to the last year of his underlying contract (here 3M). I suppose if there was a mutual understanding the Spurs could just decline the team option and offering him more (if needed). Think that’s what happened with Dort if memory serves right.

I believe this is what you're asking:

Under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), put together by the NBA and NBPA in July of 2023, players can extend their contract up to five (5) seasons (including any years remaining on their current contract). When it comes to the salary rules, the first year of the extension must be the higher of the two options:

  • 140% of the salary on the last year of the player’s current contract OR
  • 140% of the estimated average player salary for the salary cap year in which the extension starts (this is done by taking 104.5% of the prior year’s average player salary)
After the first year of the extension has been decided, the contract can have annual increases or decreases by no more than 8% of the first year of the extended salary. These increases or decreases do not compound each year. You take the percentage of the first-year salary and add that same amount to the subsequent years remaining on the contract.

Thanks— If I’m reading this right, definitely not in my interest to extend next summer if my Julian. Maybe the parties then come to an agreement where Spurs decline the TO, Julian gets paid a year earlier, and the Spurs secure a declining structure.

Agreed I think that’s the only way something happens. I’m not sure if Julian is in the same situation as Keon Ellis was last summer. The Kings could have declined his TO and Keon would have become an RFA, so at the very least they could have matched another offer.

I think Presti did something similar with Lu Dort a few years ago - Dort was on an insanely cheap $2 million team option for his last year that Presti ended up turning down and negotiating something like 5/80 or 90 that likely got him a ton of loyalty and goodwill

True, but it also got Dort an instant 13M pay rise (going from 2M to 15M the same year). All that to say there was motivation for the player too. Can see something like that for Julian. Maybe in the 33/3 range?

Tbh Champ has really impressive in these recent games and should he remain as starter or come off the bench once Castle is back?

His production of coming off the bench might drop
