Player The Layne Staley Depression-Laden Foxhole of De'Aaron Martez Fox

This guy is giving me Richard Jefferson vibes: the same passive, blasé attitude while looking super unbothered after getting the bag..If he is this toothless providing a consistent, second scoring punch after Wemby at the heart of his prime, I shudder to think of how he will look when loses half a step soon.

The logic behind the trade remains sound, but the outlook of the Fox experience (the player + contract) is not rosy one, to put it mildly.

Fox's streak of underwhelming play against actually important opponents continue..... Not even assists and rebounds could save him tonight. Woof.

It's especially pissing-off because dude, you're the vet PG on the team, the one who should be calling sets, getting guys into good positions to score, being a calming presence....... And you're jacking up 3's left and right? Not following through on any Wemby or Kornet picks, not driving to the rim with that super speed of yours? He set a terrible tone tonight.

Kinda crazy that he's the guy on the team (sans Kornet) with actual playoff experience, taking the Warriors to 7 games -- sure didn't remember that shit tonight.

It will come down to the timing of moving him so as to reduce as much as possible the cost of a likely 'salary dump' trade.. Personally, i will start sniff around it as early as next summer.

With so many teams desperate for a high end point guard, it's never going to be a salary dump unless Fox suffers a major injury.
Rocekts, Timberwolves, Heat would take him in an instant.

Fox isnt here for scoring. He understands this is wemby’s team.

Hope so, but if he stinks it up in the playoffs that could get tricky..It is going to be a "do good by him" trade where they are going to send him to a nice place/situation even if it's a divisional rival (Houston) since he resides there, but Miami (Bam was his college roommate) could be the move if they strike out on Giannis.

Highest paid player on the roster, smack deep in his prime (the golden age of 27), everyone but Wemby is struggling, is that all what you got? Barfing up lazy and ugly ass jumpers..No attempt at going up to the basket to make something happen..What a frustrating watch he's been for 2 good months now

It's nice that he's graduated to decent shooter status and has embraced more of a necessary off ball role, but there's got to be more of a balance and reading of the game, not just deferring and settling.

Even though the Spurs might need Fox to win the championship next season, unless they're going to try to pull off a Harper for Boozer swap, they've got to be mindful of getting off of Fox's albatross as soon as possible and the best opportunity to do so could be this off season depending on what happens with Antetokounmpo.

If the Bucks picks lands around where its currently slated, they could be desperate enough to package it for Fox. Or, if Antetokounmpo is traded somewhere not named Heat, they become a probable option too.

With that contract it's going to be hard to get rid of him. Small shooter who is only a passable playmaker who isn't a great defender. Archetype that is melting away in the NBA right now. We might have to attach assets to get him to the Wizards or something.

He probably isn't sure what his role is if I had to guess. And post-bag letdown, sure.
People keep saying this, like he's deferring and what not, but really it's because he rarely can get by defenders and does not create for others, so is really limited in what he can do. There's no real confusion on the court. He does handle the ball well and can be good in the clutch, but there's no 'trying to get Castle touches' for any reason other than that Castle is just a better facilitator, full stop.

Hit the nail in the head, hermano.

In some of the previous games I could actually understand him not doing a whole lot of scoring. Some of the other guys were hot and it seemed he was content not to mess with that. You know, veteran dude deferring to the young 'uns. But tonight was precisely the type of game where you'd need him to bolster the team with his scoring, especially with a lot of guys not showing up. Well he more or less tried to do that... by jacking up lazy, contested threes and barely trying to get to the cup. It's alarming how passive he gets in the comfy wins and how terrible his decision-making can be when "forced" to do something in tight games (that crazy floater behind the backboard against the Raps notwithstanding).

Jesus fuck some dude actually named this sub-section after Layne. I keep forgetting that.
And it makes me even more depressed.
Layne was a great, sensitive soul who happens to be the best singer from that era.

Nobody wants a small guard on a max on this CBA, especially one that's not elite at ANYTHING. See Trae and Ja as an example

first, fox is 6’3” with a 6’6” wingspan and an 8’4” standing reach. He’s 185lbs. These aren’t some insane measurements for a PG but it’s significantly better than young.

Second, Morant isn’t undesirable because he’s a small guard on max who’s not elite at anything, it’s because he has a whole lot of issues, like pulling a gun at a pickup game, pulling a gun again on video, got warned and did a gunsign in game, cannot adapt to any system that doesn’t feature him and only him dribbling the ball the entire time, can’t shoot, injury issues and losing he main thing that got him that max contract in the first place due to those injuries, his otherworldly athleticism. Fox is adapting to a different role and decent at it (overpaid for the role for sure), he had no behavioural issues (other than forcing a trade but then it was the Kings so who doesn’t want to?), can shoot at reasonable level, is still lightning quick (I’d say he’s still got elite ability to get to the basket), and is still a significantly better defender than both Trae and morant.

He may not be able to bag us 5 FRPs and 2 swaps, but he most definitely is tradable if we decide to do so and get back what we gave up for him, at the minimum. He’s still easily a top 50 player in the league right now, with most having up around top 30-35.

Fox's consistency, intensity and focus seem to be the issues in my eyes. Whatever happens this off-season, he needs to be putting in work to augment his game to be more effective. If that doesn't happen, I could see him offloaded by next year's trade deadline. Really frustrating and disappointing to see him flat-footed on defense at times and just disengaged. If there's a chance to trade him for a Dybantsa, Wilson or Boozer, the Spurs would really need to consider that. The matchup with Maxey tomorrow will likely be more demoralizing, too. It's one thing to have a bad game and it's another thing to just not sensing that he truly cares. Showing up when it matters is vital.
