Player The Inevitable Contract Signing Announcement of David Jones-Garcia

A little over a year ago we had barely any guards, now we're overflowing and can't afford to give them all opportunities. Great problem to have.

My big questions about him -- whether he could play within the offense especially as a facilitator (in the drive and kick style) or just be a mindless bucket getter, and how he would be in team defense.

Tonight I think he was really impressive on both scores. I saw a rotation player without a doubt, and I think the staff saw the same. He was a punch in the arm on both sides, getting steals within play and scoring at the right times and scoring on busted plays. He knows what he's doing. I liked him a ton.

this guy just craves the moments, you can tell.

Pint sized Manu today. Reminded me of a game by Nicolas Lapprovitola some years back. Here's hoping DJG builds on this and becomes a vital cog for the Spurs. We staaaccked with guards this year. Wow.

guy is a keeper.. DJG belongs in the league. The shelf-life may not be long, but he can definitely be part of an 10-man rotation of a good team or an 8-man rotation of bad/mediocre NBA team for few years. Spurs are insanely stacked on the backcourt (might be Top 3 in the league).

Fox, Castle, Harper, DJG look like a formidable backcourt for the next few years. That's going to help us immensely.
I love seeing his aggressiveness and single-handedly erasing the Hawks chances in crunch time. We need that killer instinct.

Fox/Harper
Castle/DJG
Champ/Devin
Barnes/Keldon
Wemby/Kornet

That would be my current power ranking 10 man rotation when everyone's healthy.
Olynyk, Sochan and Bryant would have to sit out.

DJG is definitely a better player than Waters and McLaughlin.
He should get 15-20mpg until Harper/Castle are back if he can consistently play on this level.

Effective creators are the ignition to an offense.

You can have the best shooters and finishers in the world on your team, but they’re nothing without good creators.

With a guard rotation that’s deep and talented like that, playmaking should not skip a beat.

The way I view it, the need for a wing like Vassell who is a shot creator is so much less necessary.

For the SF spot, the team should focus on finding one note shooters like Champagnie with acceptable defense. I think as Barnes ages, he will move down a position and would be a decent backup to Champagnie.

The PF spot is a little different. I think this spot requires more utility, more skills & more use. Guys who provide multiple things, such as hustle, rebound, defending, finishing, shooting. Doesn’t need to be all of those things, but the more, the better. Keldon fits this mold very well. Barnes right now does too, since he is able to shoot and finish inside (the latter part might not last long).

I don’t know where the fuck Carter fits between SF (because he can’t shoot) or PF (because he doesn’t know how to play basketball) right now. Hopefully they can draft someone for the PF spot, as that is a greater need. I’m no longer honing in on unrealistic dreams like Caleb Wilson, and looking at guys like Koa Peat or Karim Lopez. The next guy at this spot just needs to have a wide skillset, not someone who only shoots.

Obviously a good problem to have (two-way player potentially breaking out and deserving of an actual role), but it's unfortunate that it's at a position where there's already a bit of a logjam. I guess McLaughlin/Waters are the obvious odd men out and maybe that opens up ~10 mpg or so as a baseline...and then on nights where he's playing well you let him eat into some other guys' roles.

Then again, the way this season is going injury-wise I'm not sure it's worth worrying about "well what are we going to do when we're at full strength?" :st-lol: Either way last night was pretty exciting stuff. Won't play that well every night but showing that sort of flash in a competitive NBA game against legitimate competition was awesome to see.

This may further complicate selecting 8 players to protect in any expansion draft, particularly when you add in Bryant.

To me, it’s as if Bryant was undrafted because of how poorly he knows how to play team basketball. The dude is on the outside looking in, tbh.

that's not a backcourt, these are 4 pgs.

They may all be “pgs”, but they can play together as seen last night when Fox and DJG were on the floor at the same time. No advantage was given to the Hawks, and Fox and DJG were taking turns on offense. Get used to these guys playing together because it’s already happening - even with Fox and Castle.

Did anyone else see how scared Dyson Daniels was to post up DJG?

i'm used to awful defensive rotations, unfortunately.

His dad is/was a high school basketball coach (coached Kawhi, right?). I'm inclined to attribute most of CB's issues to confidence and adjusting to the speed of the game. It might take a while, but I think it will be noticable when the light goes on.

But he is a project.
