The guy we want is probably one of the most sought after archetypes in the league. Guys who are 6’8”, shoot, defend and rebound are rare and highly compensated.

I think we’re going to have to either 1) hit on this guy in the draft or 2) come to grips that our team construction will look different based around Wemby+4 for the most part with it swinging to a dual BIG lineup (Wemby+Kornet) where Vic if effectively the PF

Just going to be tough to find the salary required to add a proven PF (if one were even available)

While I don't think thats what we do, I do think it's still an interesting concept. Between he, Fox etc there are some tough decisions in a couple years if we did it, but it would be an all-in fun couple of years.

Holt Jr has been buddying up to PE/VC types… maybe they’ve given him the green light to go into big tax territory (I highly doubt it but what a turn of events that would be)

if the spurs really feel like they are on the brink of contending, you can trade for Lauri, and you have this year and next year before Vic's extension kicks in with your "big 3" of wemby/fox/lauri

then when time is up you trade Fox and have Harper ready to take over full time

now the price to land Lauri... it's not just going to be salary matching and filler SRPs, so thats the other part of the equation

If Atlanta feels they are not qute ready for a deep playoff run come the trade deadline, and if there's value in getting the swap wiped out, maybe we move Barnes and Sochan for KP at the deadline, along with exchanging a little draft capital.

We’ll see how his season goes but I think his career is over. I bet he doesn’t play 50 games this year or since you’re shooting for the trade deadline I bet he doesn’t play in 65% of the game available up to that point.

I think we need to prioritize having a healthy roster towards the end of the season.

I probably wouldn’t make the trade your suggesting but I haven’t seen Sochan with this roster yet or anyone alongside Fox.

I’ll accept the irony of shitting on KPs health while we sit and wait on Sochan.

If KP was making 15-20M a year, I'd take the chance, but at 30M, Spurs are going to have to give up players that they could have used on the court. If KP misses games and can't play, I'd still rather those players to be on the court than trading them away and then not having KP available to play in said games.

For Lauri, you start with Devin, Jeremy, Barnes/Keldon, 1 FRP and 2 SRPs. That’s the base offer that I think a lot of us would be good with.

But that’s not enough for Utah. Since we won’t be giving up our guards, we’d basically have to forfeit like all of our draft capital.

I just don’t see a way to make it work. I don’t mind losing FRPs if the roster is basically perfect for a few years. But I don’t like losing the optionality that those picks bring.

I've really come around on Lauri's fit. I didn't want him last season when a lot of people were in on him, but right now, I'd love him as I feel he'd be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, I like the price to acquire him a lot less than I did last off-season.

he might not be ball dominant and the spacing would work but markkanen will demand 15-20 attempts a night at a minimum - and would be willing to look off wemby at times to get them.

markkanen's catch-and-shoot ability sounds great in a vacuum but there would absolutely be threads here haranguing him for being a selfish shot-chucker, disrupting wemby's rhythm and potentially unbalancing the offense. between wemby (20-25 FGA), fox (15-20 FGA), markkanen (15-20 FGA), an ascending harper + the rest there would be a lot of mouths to feed on offense and only one ball.

there's a reason serious contenders haven't been falling over themselves to acquire him since he was drafted eight years ago. we don't know exactly what those are but it could easily be down to them assessing his high-volume tendencies aren't a match for a contending team that already has a star(s) on the roster.

I just don’t see the practicality of this. We’re finally seeing our role players do role player things. On top of filling in nicely with an all star and 3 rotation players out.

Depth matters.

To consolidate down to one player with all those assets makes no sense to me.

I completely understand wanting to upgrade but that’s too much at a time where we are finally seeing our team play like an actual team.

Kyle Anderson is still only 32 years old and his defensive metrics are still good. He's making threes at 34% at volume over the past two seasons. Anderson and the Spurs know each other and he's playoff tested. His contract is only guaranteed through this season so if he falls off a cliff this season the Spurs can cut bait. Perfect fit if were being honest. The Jazz are loaded with picks and cap space and would probably want Sochan. With Carter Bryant in the fold I would consider that deal as crazy as it sounds especially if you plan on letting Sochan walk at season's end anyway. My opening offer with be Olynyk plus the Jazz getting their own second round pick back this season.

Other names worth watching: Dillon Brooks, Grant Williams.

Hopeful that they already have that guy-ish rostered.
Champ is 6'8", big and long enough, career .372 from 3% on bad teams and without a set role, solid rebounder and Top40 this season (tiny sample), and a good enough defender funneling to Wemby & Kornet not to overpay for someone else.
Plus Bryant has the potential to fill that role in a couple of season. Spurs fans really take Champ for granted, but if you just looked at his profile he'd largely fit that bill and for a fraction of the going rate.

I think the real problem upgrading the 4 is our most movable players/assets are all 4s (Barnes, Oly, Sochan, KJ), much harder to trade a PF or 2 for a PF unless its a pure salary dumb or costs way more assets than I want to give up before knowing how much French/Vanilla we see, how Oly looks here, how Sochan fits with this yr, if KJ really turned a corner and just wants to grab O-rebs and putbacks and can hit the 3 again.

Right now it looks like we have a high quality 9-man rotation and the weakest position still has Oly and Sochan (and Bryant) to test the waters.

Averaging 56 games played a yr also factors into that. Kristaps has averaged 55, gets paid 1/2 as much, and is a much better defender and a better rebounder.
Availability matters to serious contenders, paying 1/4 of your cap for a guy you can't count on to dress is bad business. I want no part of Lauri until you get paid to take his bad contract like the Celtics did with Kristaps.

I think Olynyk ends up as the starting 4 when its all said and done. He strokes the 3, rebounds, plays better defense than Barnes. Fox, Castle, Wemby, Vassel and Olynyk w/ Harper, Kornet, Champ, Johnson and Barnes/Sochan looks pretty good to me.

Oly is "only" 2 yrs older, a much better shooter and better rounder, and doesn't cost you anything. Oly has shot 50% from the corners over the past 3 yrs, he provides the spacing and rebounding we need better than Kyle.
Not sure Kyle's corporate knowledge from 8 season back does anything at all, Oly is more up-to-date on the Spurs today.

If Patrick Williams maintains his strong start, maybe Sochan and Olynyk for him by the trade deadline?

He's underwhelmed, been injury prone and traditionally hasn't shot the 3 with enough volume, but still only 24 and fits the 3 and D big wing or combo forward archetype.

He's overpaid, but if Sochan is going to command MLE type money anyway, it's only another $5 million or so annually for a potential Barnes replacement.
