Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

The other thing that made this summer a unique opportunity was the value of each asset they had to play with. The ATL picks are now exponentially less valuable than 6 months ago. Devin is much less valuable, similarly. And Sochan is going to be worth less tomorrow than he is today, to say the least.
I agree with your whole post but this x100

To me they need to play this first half of the season and see where they are. If everything goes according to plan your big money max stars will be Wembanyama and Harper. Superstar big and PG. Then Castle as a secondary star who is well rounded and defends the perimeter. The rest of the roster will be role players who need to fit in under the cap given those 3 salaries.

For this first half Vassell needs to show he can and will be a plus shooter and decent defender off the bench. If he can't do that then his salary becomes a problem. It would be nice if he does acclimate to that role as it gives time for Harper to develop while giving the bench veteran scoring.
Did you forget that Fox is on the roster?

No, I was talking about seeing what they have for the future when everyone here now will be off rookie deals. If all goes according to plan Harper will replace Fox as the team's star max big time PG down the road. Harper and Wembanyama as the big money guys, Castle as the SG/wing, and the rest role players that develop or get found down the road. If it goes according to plan with Harper and Castle development wise.

OK, but you’d be getting Lauri now, so you should probably reflect that in your player plans.

Markkanen? I'd be very cautious adding that salary at that cost in assets for a guy who misses +- 30 games a year to injury.

I actually think Castle is a 3, or will be, as his body develops, just like Jimmy Butler. Has a similar game too.

Giannis about to be on the block. Alongside D-Book (worst contract of all time?) and KD when the Rockets implode this year.

Also KATa anyone? He will be available soon too. Not my cup of tea but he spreads the floor well.

I’m just thinking of big names.

I'm getting drawn back to a possible Lauri deal. Not necessarily because of Lauri himself, although I think he'd be a perfect fit at PF, but also because a potential trade would open up additional minutes for Castle, Harper and Champagnie. I really like the way Champagnie looked last season and so far in preseason and I'd also be ok with Waters geeting deep bench minutes.

Something like Vassell, Barnes the 2026 pick with Atl (maybe lottery protected) and their own second round pick for Lauri would work on the trade machine. Would that be enough for Utha to do it? They'd safe around 20M in salary after this season when Barnes contract ends.

No way the Jazz trade Markkanen for that. The Spurs path to him is probably through Fox to a third team and some combo of picks, prospects, flexibility to the Jazz.

He’s going to be Butler, minus the drama. Butler was drafted at 22. Castle will be as good as year 3, 25YO Butler, at that age, with room to still grow.

Don’t get hung upon positional designations. With a crew like this, we could go back to the Beautiful Game. I remember a clip with Pop rolling out the balls at practice, saying “everyone is a PG” repeatedly.

Yeah, Ainge doesn’t do deals, he does screw jobs. I’d rather wait for the nearly inevitable divorce between Trae and the Hawks, and scoop up his Finnish teammate Miikka Muurinen, slim Jesus, in the 27 draft.

they traded Sexton and a 2nd for Nurkic
they traded John Collins for Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love

Yeah, I'd much rather a role player like Camara, Jaden McDaniels, or PJ Washington. Or a Tari Eason type. Cheaper all around, better timeline.
I'd rather go solid rebounder and/or D with decent shooting or shooting upside than excellent shooter with Reb & D question marks, especially at that cost and especially if they miss 30 games/yr. Someone that can be physical and bring switch-ability.

No one wants to face a D juggernaut with a top 5/10 offensive player. Lean into that. Start using the two-ways on guys like Jabari Walker, bring in actual forwards with those. (Why the fuck does Ingram have a contract! What NBA position could be ever play???)

I'm really trying to avoid getting too pissed off about how well Eason would fit perfectly into our team.

You all should be more pissed off about missing out on Buzelis, tbh. I know I am.

3 man guard rotation with Fox/Castle/Harper
3 man big rotation with Wemby/Lauri/Kornet

then divy up the SF minutes between Champagnie, whoever is left between HB and KJ, and eventually Bryant

you have that for 2 seasons until wemby is up for extension, at which point you have to move Fox for $ purposes
Sounds ok to me. You'd contend for those two years, Castle and Harper could be the starting backcourt by then anyway and you'd get assets in form of role players, moveable contracts and/or picks for Fox.

Why would they want Fox? Say the deal I proposed takes place at the deadline this season. That would only mean half a year of Barnes salary and three years of Vassell. Even if they couldn't reroute him, which I doubt, that would be 20M less per year than what they're paying Lauri. Also they could tank properly and hope for a better outcome in next years draft.

Yeah, it’s too bad we only got the RoY out of that draft.
We had the 8th pick. Yes, it turned into Barnes and Chris Paul and led to Castle’s expedited development, but if Buzelis further develops- then it will look bad.

Spurs didn't get a bad return on paper, but yeah, when you have a top 10 pick chances are it's a better shot at top tier young talent than you'll get by kicking the can 7 years down the road.

It actually turned into Minny’s 2031 unprotected FRP, which was the key piece in the Fox trade, so unless Buzelis turns out to be better than Fox, I don’t care.

We also still hold the Minny swap.
