If it’s truly a rib bruise it’s a pain tolerance thing. A fracture is doubtful it isn’t a football collision and he’s young….im just hoping they actually got imaging and didn’t just physical exam it

They are probably just labelling it as a 'rib contusion' until an MRI is done to determine the damage. Fractured ribs happen pretty regularly in the NBA. Zubac was ruled out for the season with one in March (though whether he'd have returned if the Pacers weren't tanking is an unknown).

And here's what happened to Tyler Herro in January:

• Injury Severity: Initially labeled as a right rib contusion, further evaluation/MRI revealed a "right costochondral injury" to the ribs, which can be highly painful and often requires, rather than surgery, time to heal based on pain tolerance.
• Cause: Herro later confirmed in February that he sustained three fractured ribs, or a "buckle rib fracture" from a Jan 10th game against the Pacers, though he played for three subsequent games with pain medication before being ruled out.
• Recovery and Return: Herro missed 15 games. He returned to full practice after the 2026 All-Star break (Feb 19) and was cleared for action, often wearing an NFL-style "flak jacket" to protect the area.

Something similar happened to Jarrett Allen in the 2024 playoffs:

• Cause: A hard elbow from Orlando's Franz Wagner in Game 1 and a subsequent hit in the same spot during Game 4.
• Severity: Initially termed a contusion, it was revealed to be a fractured/broken rib. The pain made it impossible for him to raise his arms, which is essential for his defensive role.
• Impact: Allen sat out the final eight games of the 2024 playoffs, including the rest of the first-round series against the Magic and the entire second-round series against the Celtics.
• Recovery: The injury was severe enough that it caused pain for several weeks after the season ended.

"Contusion" doesn't tell us anything. That's just what they call any injury when an impact happens and they haven't diagnosed it yet. It could be anything from a slight bruise to a fracture.
