I wasn't fan of Markannen last year and I am even less fan of him now with Fox here and Markannen's new big contract. He's a bucket but not much on D plus questionable health. I'd rather see solid 3 and D PF then one sided star with bigger contract.
The Sochan extension is a good Rorschach Test on whether someone is completely clueless about this sport or notbtw one of the state run media podcasts has said the Keegan Murray contract is a fair model for Sochan because their contributions are similar. I’m so desperate for real reporting on this team.

With Tynan, I always wonder if he’s trying to balance criticism with maintaining his access. But this shit came out of outer space and he was absolutely being sincere. The Sochan extension is a good Rorschach Test on whether someone is completely clueless about this sport or not![]()
I used to like Tynan, but lately (and by that I mean the last year or two) he's been showing his ass and just comes off as another clueless fan who cares about maintaining his media credentials more than anything else. He also comes off as lazy... you can't be a serious podcaster and not be able to have a normal schedule you keep to.With Tynan, I always wonder if he’s trying to balance criticism with maintaining his access. Jacob Tobey has harder edges than this team’s beat reporters.
The three year timeline does not fit because Castle is due an extension in what would be Sochan's last year. In 28-29 with the now projected 7% annual bumps you're looking at a cap of $189.5 million with a first apron at $240.0M. Fox will be due $57.6M, Victor $57.4M (assuming a 30% supermax), Vassell $27.0M, Harper $17.2M, and Bryant $8.0M for a total of $167.2M between those five players. Let's say the Spurs pick #20 in 2026 and Atlanta is #20 in 2027. So $5M each by 2028-29 and you're up to $177M. Let's say pick #25 in 2028 with the Boston swap and you're paying $4M for it so you're up to $181M. So that's $59M to re-sign Castle and fill out the rest of the roster. In the best case Castle is a 25% max player so you're paying $47.4M in 28-29. So you have less than $12M left to pay Sochan, and that's assuming no MLE signings in 26, 27, nor 28, bye bye Kornet, no Barnes replacement, no Keldon replacement other than those three firsts. There is no way I'm giving Sochan a three year contract, no way in hell, until he develops a jump shot. Two years is all I'm willing to pay him in the hope he becomes somebody. And Sochan would be a shithead to sign a two year deal on his second contract, so I think he should be traded for veteran help on short contracts unless there is some reason to believe he's about to have a breakout season. This wouldn't be a bad deal at all (it's sub MLE money, which IMO is appropriate) and the 3-year timeline fits with what we need to be thinking about.
I don't think Jeremy takes this... but this seems right to me.
The problem in the scenario isn't Sochan's theoretical sub-MLE deal, it's Vassell's $27MM. Spurs will need to move off Devin by then and turn his $27MM into two or more rotation players. We're going to need dudes on the $14MM that is theorized in this scenario. If we're planning on filling out the roster with nothing but min vets, it might get kind of iffy around here. The three year timeline does not fit because Castle is due an extension in what would be Sochan's last year. I'd still rather sign an MLE vet who fits well if they can get off Vassell's contract. Considering Victor's draw I think the team can do way better that route than what Sochan projects to become. Preferably use the MLE to get someone on a three year deal in the summer of 26 so their money rolls off when Harper is due his extension. The problem in the scenario isn't Sochan's theoretical sub-MLE deal, it's Vassell's $27MM. That's fine. I don't want Sochan on this team at all, but we're going to have to have someone making that kind of money... so I wouldn't be too upset if it were Sochan (but I'd prefer it wasn't). Any sub-MLE deal is relatively easy to move off of though (we even got a positive return on McBuckets and his over MLE contract, if you recall)I'd still rather sign an MLE vet who fits well if they can get off Vassell's contract. Way too much opportunity cost for me throwing good money after bad in SochanThat's fine. Castle SIGNS his extension in 2028, but it doesn’t kick in until July 2029. Jeremy can get a 3 year deal without stepping on Castle’s extension. The three year timeline does not fit because Castle is due an extension in what would be Sochan's last year. Nah his second contract starts in year 5, which is 28-29. Which would be the third year of Sochan's deal. Castle is only cost controlled in his first four years: 24-25, 25-26, 26-27, and 27-28. Spurs make the QO in summer 2028 and he becomes a RFA if they hadn't already gotten an extension done for 28-29 and beyond.Castle SIGNS his extension in 2028, but it doesn’t kick in until July 2029. That's pretty hostile, considering we don't even know what kind of deal he's expecting. If he develops as a reliable spot up shooter, he's a good Keldon replacement for when he eventually gets traded.F Jeremy. He hasn't proven a darn thing. If he wants a big contract, show him the door. If he wants over MLE money, either let him go or trade him.
Well, that's kind of the problem, it doesn't seem like that is happening any time soon. In any case, it's better to wait and see, if he does then the outlook changes completely for him. Until then, I'm with the don't extend camp. That's pretty hostile, considering we don't even know what kind of deal he's expecting. If some dumb front office wants to give him that, then good luck to them and good for Sochan.btw one of the state run media podcasts has said the Keegan Murray contract is a fair model for Sochan because their contributions are similar. I’m so desperate for real reporting on this team.
