Player Sochan's Extension Watch

The numbers are close enough that you could make the numbers work. Regardless, the point, all those teams would play KJ in their playoff rotation, which is what you believe they wouldn't, but rather would play CB. This is the debate, you think CB is the better player for the role. Not only do I disagree with that, it's imo Keldon and Devin would play for playoff teams. Keldon and Devin are legit NBA bodies.

The only way you will see them play on a playoff team is in this hypothetical world of them being on another team bc they won’t be on a playoff rotation for the Spurs. They will be the reason why the Spurs make the play-in rather than the playoffs.

Devin’s legit NBA body has him injured all the time. And KJs legit NBA body has him gaining weight and then losing weight and then gaining weight and then losing weight bc he can’t find his niche.

Meanwhile CB is a legit 6’6 and a half barefoot and 6’8 in shoes. That sounds like an NBA body to me. Also I think by February he will be better for the role. Not right now. Right now he is very raw. But give him some playing time and I think he will be way better for the role than Vassell in the starting line up. Vassell wants to shoot the ball too much (he won’t/shouldn’t have the opportunity to shoot more than 8 times a game) and he doesn’t want to play any defense.

And KJs legitimately can’t guard anybody and really doesn’t shoot the ball well either. He’s also is a chucker. For some reason he shot 10 times a game last year. That number should be halved this year.

The Spurs last year averaged 88 shots a game. I broke it down by player in another thread but with Harper and some of our new additions, Vassell, Sochan, and KJ are going to be greatly affected by this.

Vassell averaged 14 shots per game last year. This year he is going to be the 4th option in the starting line up. His shot selection is probably going to be about 9 shots a game. Do you think he will be happy with that role? Do you think he will be engaged on defense when he isn’t getting any shots? I don’t and there’s no reason to believe he will be.

Last year KJ averaged 10 shots per game. He was the 6th man of our team. Whelp he won’t be that anymore. That’s Harper now. KJ is going to lose a huge amount of FGA attempts and is going to have to be efficient when he does shoot. That doesn’t exactly scream KJ. And neither does attention to detail on the defensive side.

I'm just stunned you are dying on this hill. CB avg 8 and 4 in college. Vassell and Johnson are established NBA players.

In short, betting on Bryant, rather than Vassell and Johnson in a playoff scenario is putting potential over performance — which is not the point of our discussion.

All three get waived, or available for loan for one year only, you would pick Carter Bryant over the other two if you are playoff team?

I'm not sure if Sochan has a future in the NBA in the long run.
if he has a future at all, it likely won't be with a contender.
even less with a contender, where he is a bad fit.

Spurs see themself as a contender in two years.
and Sochan is a bad fit with the Spurs, because he will never be an at least average shooter and he will always be a low IQ player.
I hope Spurs do the math. shouldn't be that difficult.

Time to make a phone call to Sacramento......

Now he has a sprained wrist and will miss the season opener lmao...dude is fucking made of glass

I actually like Sochan but I think he's been played mostly out of position for his career and made to handle the ball when that's not his thing, especially when pop was trying to use him as a point forward. Minimal minutes is where'd he excel considering his high motor. He should be a prototype in the mold of Rodman and only focus on defense with 0 concern for offense. I don't know about his extension though and what the hit would be monetarily at this point in time.

Im not sure that’s a viable archetype in today’s NBA

Where's it been reported that he hurt his wrist? How long is he out for now?

I believe you're right considering everything in the NBA today is trending more towards positionless ball. Sochan's lack of offense will end up hurting him more than anything in today's nba unfortunately.

Obviously this dude needs a QO and nothing more at this point. He’d have to be a completely different person overnight to dig himself out of this.

Sprained wrist during limited practice is some wild stuff. I guess anyone can fall down at any point and land on their wrist but I’d say this isn’t super common.

He's not lefty like Harper or Fox so shouldn't be a problem with signing that extension with his left wrist strained. Actually for NBA money I'd sign with pen up in my ass 🤣

With Sochan, we swung for Kawhi 2.0. Obviously it didn't happen. But can he be a role player (yes) but can he stay healthy (not yet). He will get what he gets.

I want him to succeed but he needs to (re?) invent himself into some type of player who can survive and help out. he doesn't even know what his role is yet. much less if he can be consistent at it. It feels like he's a rookie all over again every year. That sucks.

I think what Sochan and Salaun are showing is that tanking teams should not draft projects. If you don’t have established infrastructure they will get lost and flame out. “We can fix him” rights only exist for winners.

The drop dead date is soon right? I bet nothing gets done.

not a hard rule tbh. coulibaly looks like a very nice player for the Wizards

Sochan signs extension with the Spurs for $220 mil.

Is what Shams would tweet if the Spurs signed Sochan to an extension.

Sucks for Sochan but a bullet dodged for the Spurs. You have so many dummies on Reddit wanting to sign him to a Keegan Murray type deal. Now the asking price has to be lower if he wants to stay on the team but as is he’s even lower on the totem pole with all the upgrades the Spurs made over the summer.

Since the spurs are unbeaten in preseason, and have looked fairly decent so far, what leverage does Sochan have to get a good extension? Simply put, I think that the spurs play a certain style with certain players in the lineup and another style without certain players out of the lineup. So far so good without Sochan. Is he really that important to the team ? I don't know.

What I do know is that this team is not the talent limited team it was 2-3 years ago. if you want decent money you're going to have to produce at a higher level to stay on the team, or the starting lineup.

unbeaten in preseason
this means quite literally nothing and i can guarantee you has a 0% effect on negotiations

problem is his level of play, what he brings to the table, and his fit with the roster (questionable shooting from the guard position from players who are much higher priority than he is)

his inability to showcase any improvement in europe and now camp/preseason hurts, but the team's preseason success is fairly meaningless imo. kuminga was dominant in last years preseason iirc

I don’t agree about coulibaly. He doesn’t bring much to the table on offense, still. Certainly not a starter on one of the top 25 teams in the league. Seems like a nice energy guy off the bench but you can’t make him a key part of a half court offense.
