Player Sochan's Extension Watch

Too bad they have nothing I'd want other than unprotected swaps and picks. Would have to make it a three team trade to get something useful.
the only guy i liked from there is Keon Ellis but not exactly the biggest need for us

We missed the opportunity of sending Vassell and Sochan in the Fox trade, rather than worse contracts and picks. Not including them was sold like a win at the time, but it wasn't.

Thart's why Keldon/Sochan/Vassell for Lauri/Kevin Love needs to happen.

I don't like it. Markannen made sense a year ago but the Spurs are in a way better place now and Lauri would cost Castle since it would be impossible to pay him if he's anything approaching star level with Markannen's money on the cap. I'd much rather have Steph on a rookie contract and if things aren't working out you have the trade pieces to go after a real star like Giannis instead.

There is nothing more annoying than the “well did you think of what percentage of the cap it will be 4 years from now?” people.

The percentage and the descending value is the same phenomenon across all contracts handed out. So it’s not like Jeremy’s pay counts as a percentage and so and so’s pay is a hard dollar amount and also Jeremy’s team will have a bigger cap whereas the other guy’s team won’t.

No - it really is as simple as “big number is big”

I'd offer him a 3/42 right now. He can take the security now or refuse and bet on himself if he wants.

Danny laughs, and hangs up the phone.

If you’re not coming at him with a PILE of unprotected firsts, you’re not getting Markkanen.
The firsts are understood. I'm just talking about making the money work. It consolidates talent and opens up more playing time for Harper and Bryant. The Hawks picks will be meh (at least this year), but ideally ours should be as well in the coming years. put the 26 pick swap and the 28 pick swap on the table. I forget the rules on sequence of firsts you can trade. It is also a good move if you believe the Spurs only keep Fox around for 2-3 years.

I agree that offer won't do it, but now Ainge Jr runs the show, and I have a feeling he'll be more reasonable. Markkanen isn't worth a pile of unprotected firsts, he's probably in the Fox tier in terms of trade value.

I'm just stunned you are dying on this hill. CB avg 8 and 4 in college. Vassell and Johnson are established NBA players.

In short, betting on Bryant, rather than Vassell and Johnson in a playoff scenario is putting potential over performance — which is not the point of our discussion.

All three get waived, or available for loan for one year only, you would pick Carter Bryant over the other two if you are playoff team?
For the Spurs? 100%. Vassell is a dumb iso chucker who plays zero defense and doesn’t even pay attention on defense. His one skill is he can make tough iso fade away jumpers. Yeah no thanks.

And KJ brings zero help to the Spurs. He isn’t efficient. He doesn’t bring the ball up well. He doesn’t play defense at all. He dribble drives into traffic and throws up stupid shots.

If ( and with these two morons it’s a big if) they actually embraced their role and embraced being a role player who all they do is swing the ball or take wide open shots, and play hard nosed defense, then I want them on the team. But they don’t and they won’t. I just need players who play within themselves. We already have talent at the top

You can’t trade a swap, only the pick with the swap attached. No thanks.

Go look at Scott’s thread on future picks and salary. AddMarkkanen on what will already be a trainwreck in a handful of years. People complain about Vassell at $27M, but Markkanen at $50+M is a bigger disaster. Our problem was never scoring, so we don’t need that, and he doesn’t bring much defense to the table.

I just don't unsertand the Markannen obsession from some of these posters.

It's fairly simple.
What do the Spurs lack the most? Shooting and wing size.
Markkanen happens to be one of the best 6'10 and taller shooters in the league.

Hypothetical scenario: Markkanen for Devin/Barnes/Sochan/picks package.
Fox/Castle/Harper 32/32/32 mpg at PG/SG.
Wemby/Markkanen/Kornet 33/33/25mpg, Sochan 5mpg at PF/C.
Champagnie/Keldon/Sochan 25/20/15 with 36 available minutes at SF.
Those 36 minutes can go to Olynyk (Markkanen or Sochan to SF in those lineups), Bryant (if he proves to be good enough), Waters/DJG (Castle moves to SF) or Champ/Keldon/Sochan get 30 minutes if they're playing well.
I'd trade Keldon, but that's not happening.

That would be a perfect roster fit wise, it's just that we can't take another max contract without trading either Fox or Markkanen away in summer 2027.
But if Wemby proves to be on MVP trajectory and we're like 30-20 at the deadline, Markkanen would push us into legit contender territory and we'd worry about cap space in 2 years.

This wouldn't be a bad deal at all (it's sub MLE money, which IMO is appropriate) and the 3-year timeline fits with what we need to be thinking about.

I don't think Jeremy takes this... but this seems right to me.

I was CEO of the Markannen bandwagon and I still love Lauri the player... but IMO the Fox trade shut the door on that. If we didn't have Fox (and I'm happy we do), Lauri would still be my #1 target.

But that ship is sailed and we're spared from having to deal with fucking Utah.

I wasn't fan of Markannen last year and I am even less fan of him now with Fox here and Markannen's new big contract. He's a bucket but not much on D plus questionable health. I'd rather see solid 3 and D PF then one sided star with bigger contract.

hypothetically, a trade involving Fox and Markkanen would be legitimately interesting but theres no shot that happens from a PR perspective given how openly Fox wants to play here and basically moved heaven and earth to force that trade

this means quite literally nothing and i can guarantee you has a 0% effect on negotiations

problem is his level of play, what he brings to the table, and his fit with the roster (questionable shooting from the guard position from players who are much higher priority than he is)

his inability to showcase any improvement in europe and now camp/preseason hurts, but the team's preseason success is fairly meaningless imo. kuminga was dominant in last years preseason iirc
To quote myself " you're going to have to produce at a higher level to stay on the team, or the starting lineup." Now you're correct, preseason doesn't mean much, but it does mean you're at least healthy enough to start the season and to quote you "his inability to showcase any improvement in europe and now camp/preseason hurts". So yes, the spurs conservative brass will probably take into account the fact that his game hasn't improved all that much and and that he is a bit injury prone - its something that wont help Sochan up during salary negotiations when he wants big money like some of his classmates.

I've heard the "Lauri will put us in cap hell" from the twitterverse and then those same people are willing to pay Sochan $15-$20 mil a year saying "it's a good deal when you think of the cap." Carter Bryant has deaded any need to extend Sochan. We have JS for this year while Carter learns the ropes. If Sochan checks out because he doesn't have a deal, then he isn't someone we would want around long term anyway. And I really did think Devin was the Mr. Glass of the team, but Sochan said "Hold My Zywiec."
