I hope the Spurs not offer him an extension and see how he plays this season.
As we saw this offseason, restricted free=agents have no leverage in negotiations.

Anything much over 15MM and I’d rather just wait and make him prove himself. Less than that and I’d probably be happy extending him now. I’m still holding out hope that he’s a legitimate rotation guy but I’d be lying if I said I was very confident.

The move was to package him, Devin and an ATL pick for Durant. It was the right time and the right move for this specific team.

Power of friendship won out so he’s going to get 3 years 17.5 per because this is still an unserious front office.

We should be giving him away for literally anything at this point, though. He’s not going to have any value in 12 months and will need a rider to dump him.

I do wonder how he captivated the FO like he did. especially with his complaining to the friendly media last year when the team decided he was more important than Vic for 2 months and gave him an opportunity to find a role in this league. I know he was set up to fail. But he’s also set up to fail playing the 4 for 50% of the game.

Doesn’t seem very bright off the court either. And these workout videos where he’s taking these wildly inconsistent step back and side step 3’s shouldn’t impress any coach when you see guys like LeBron still methodically working on their jumpers from set spots with consistent mechanics.

He’s just an unserious guy hired by unserious executives who were dazzled by a British accent.

What’s there to watch? Only extension this guy deserves is an extended time on the bench watching Carter Bryant take his spot

Even if the Spurs view him as an important long term piece, it would be such an unforced error to give him an extension of any significance now. As OP mentioned, RFAs have zero leverage in the league right now. Sochan will command even less interest than Kuminga and Cam Thomas next summer.

Unfortunately, unlike this year’s class of RFAs, there will actually be a lot of money floating around next year.

He needs to be traded. He'll get more on the open market next summer than he's worth to the Spurs and he's an awful fit here. He'll probably blow up wherever he ends up and everyone will say how stupid the Spurs were for letting him go but I don't see how the hell he is ever going to work out here.

Maybe? A lot of that class has already signed, our own De’Aaron Fox being one. The only one I’m sure will hit the market is Trae. I can’t see Memphis passing on JJJ after clearing cap room to renegotiate him up to $35M for this season. Likewise, can’t see the Lakers not locking up Luka Magic.

Good answer. The Spurs usually like to take care of their own, but sometimes it's been to the detriment of the team.

They need to start planning wisely because it won't be long before they need to take care of guys like Castle, Harper, Carter, etc. and obviously Wemby's pending extension next summer.

well when the team was pretty bereft of talent it was a no-brainer to extend any guy with a pulse, even bringing back guys like Tre Jones made a lot of sense at the time. but it's time to be more selective and cautious

Hopefully there is nothing to watch because he doesn't get an extension. Almost every on the court basketball problem this team has can be attributed to this guy. Carter Bryant was drafted to take either his or Devin's place. Hopefully he takes both.

Carter has a lot to show before talking about taking Sochan or Vassell spot. The little I saw him get me a bit worried, he cannot hit the side of a barne to save his life... he is a 3D without the 3. Now obviously rookie, summer league blabla etc etc.. but saying he is a work in progress is a nice way to put it. Showing energy on D won't be enough for him to get a spot

He shot much better in college than summer league, I tend to think that's a better indicator. Bottom line it's too soon to tell, some were saying Blake Wesley was a top 5 talent in the class after summer league. I like him but we'll see.

He can’t be traded if he’s re-signed right now. Thats probably the beginning and end of it at the moment. One of the state run media podcasts has him easily > 20 mill per year. Because he’s a “great” player. Who “plays really well” with Vic. And 32% on wide open 3’s will make a “massive difference”.
