Player Sochan's Extension Watch

Absolutely brutal offensively tonight. He did some good things on defense but his offense pretty much made him unplayable down the stretch (props to Mitch for sitting his ass and not forcing him minutes).

I don’t know man. I like Sochan and want to believe in him but I’m just not sure he’s ever going to pull it together. He looked worse than Carter Bryant on offense tonight :st-lol: Seriously had like 4 or 5 wide open looks near the rim and passed them up or made the wrong play every time.

Bad game for sure but :lol at all the usual suspects being so happy a spur plays bad after it happened after sulking for two days after he played well.

I guess it’s nice not having to invent random narratives and actually have something to fall back on to say sochan sucks.

Getting stopped by Reed Sheppard was not a good look. Gonna be hard to wipe that from memory.

Still need to see him in more games~

What more do you really need to see? He's the same guy. The shot somehow looks worse. At least he's shooting free throws with 2 hands but that's about it. Not much flow to the offense with him on the court.

Yea Sochan followed up a solid first game back with a fucking stinker last night. Need to see more gamesobv but I'm just not sure he's over going to be viable offensive player, especially in the Playoffs. He kills spacing on a team that already has spacing issues. He still has that stupid hitch at the base of his shot despite all the videos of him shooting without it this offseason. He's just not a good fit besides Wemby on the offensive side of the ball. He's still one of our best defenders though and that's why he's going to continue to get minutes. Need him to start knocking down some of these 3's and he needs to not be so hesitant with the ball under the basket. Go up strong and finish the layup in traffic. Need more from him offensively or there's a good chance he's not going to be a Spur long-term tbh.

They just like the guy and want him to succeed. I get it.

But I'm with you, when someone shows you who he is for 3 years, you can't expect him to suddenly be different...

All he can be with this team is a plug-in defensive role player. If he wants to have a bigger role, he needs a different team with different needs.

His challenge scoring in traffic at the rim may be just as big a problem as his wanky outside shot.

Big picture, he's getting an opportunity. But he has lots of limitations. It's not looking great overall. But I like how the coach is playing him to be honest. Hopefully he finds a niche playing with actual point guard play.

I do like his aggression when the team plays soft. And so playing him early last night vs HOU was needed because we were getting overwhelmed. But PF Keldon will probably get more and more of his minutes once Kornet returns.

He was so useless on offense last night. He looked like Rodman minus the elite offensive rebounding, just pointless. He can’t get by anyone/create advantages or put pressure on the rim. Free throws look good, 3 looks as bad as it ever has.

Defense was solid. He is just a situational player at best I’m afraid.

edit to add: only been 2 games, should give him at least a few more to get his rhythm and timing, I just don't see it changing a whole bunch...just a very awkward player to fit into modern basketball schemes.

there is a reason the front office didn't extend him yet. I'd rather keep some cash to extend KJ, he is still a liability in defense, although he is doing better, but his energy and rebounding are a big part the Spurs are 6-2 so far.

there is no "yet". he can no longer be extended, he enters the off-season as an RFA

sorry, you're right; I meant was not extended and might not offer him a contract "good enough for him" next summer

the cash to extend KJ is the cash he’s making now. The worst thing we can start doing is paying bench guys 20 mill. He’s a MLE 6th/7th man from now until forever. Can’t pay him like a starter.

I could see Keldon taking a significant pay cut on his next deal as a result of the changing CBA and a likely desire to stay in San Antonio. I could see a 3/33 extension happening.

bruh.. 10 mn 1 pt 1 reb 1 stl -10 +/-. Last time he played less than 11 mn in a game was his rookie year.

he is -25 last 4 games

Props to Spurs FO for not being dumb and sign a prolongation... He is an horrible fit with this roster.

Spurs need to think of players who can make a difference in the playoffs, regardless of money, are we sure Keldon can do that? Personally, I would not commit any long term money to Keldon until he proves he can be a playoff contributor.

No disagreement on what the Spurs *should* do... however if we're thinking about what the Spurs *would* do... I can totally see them rewarding Keldon for his loyalty, without him proving he can be a playoff contributor.

It's not even about the fit, he's just not a good player.
If he was just a bad fit, he'd still be good at things he's supposed to be good at.

Kelnotjustdoneyet is the closest thing we have of an enforcer, a PO team needs dat kind of guys tbh... I have never been a big fan but despite his limitations, he hits his FTs, has a very solid eFG%, does not TO the ball and is our best offensive rebounder, cannot ask for much more for a 20 mn guy off the bench. If he can do just that in POs thats some good value. His contract expires next year, he is not cheap but there is worst

I agree he is not a good basketball player but on occasion depending on the matchups he can contribute. He is much worst this year than previous years with the Spurs that's not saying much but you can see he is lost right now, does not know where to go and how to contribute.. he is the dude you picked randomly to complete your street ball team.

All i gotta say is that I hope he didn’t pass on a 52/4 deal this summer to bet on himself. That doesn’t looks promising for him right now.

He is consistently the worst defender on the court. How much do the Spurs want to commit to a guy that can’t be played in the fourth quarter?

Often, what my eyes expect to see when Sochan has the ball is not what happens. It can be a jarring viewing experience.

The same happens with Wemby, but it's not the same - why vs how.

The only team in the league that can structure a perfectly predictable playoff roster is OKC. They can put this level of inspection on every one of their players and be super particular.

Everyone else needs some bench guys that make them go “maaaaaaaybe???”. So this team will have to leave it up to the gods with some dudes. Keldon is as good of a microwave scorer as most. He has the potential to win us games and likely won’t lose us games. And if the lights are too bright for him in big settings, we’ll likely learn that this year before it matters too much and then we can plan accordingly.
