Player Sochan's Extension Watch

I think it will be tough for Sochan to carve out a role on this team. And now there's Keldon playing his type of role off the bench as far as crashing the glass goes.

Lesson learned not to use a lottery pick on a player that was a bench player in college I guess. Maybe he might still find a niche on another team somewhere but his roll on this team has sailed imo

I’ve sold almost all of my Sochan stock.. willing to wait for 20 games this season to sell the rest if there’s no improvement in 3 point takes and makes.

The just flat out plays better without him. He does not fill a need on this team without a reliable jumper, plain and simple. Spurs should trade him and shouldn't resign him

Spurs need to think of players who can make a difference in the playoffs, regardless of money, are we sure Keldon can do that? Personally, I would not commit any long term money to Keldon until he proves he can be a playoff contributor.
Sure but keldon making 11mil would be very movable

Situational perimeter defender off the bench. It was good having him on Doncic in minutes where Castle needed a breather.

But ultimately Carter Bryant is being groomed for that role and projects to be a much better shooter

If he is fine accepting that role and he is paid appropriately for it I wouldn't be adverse to that. But the fact they couldn't come to an agreement on an extension tells me Sochan thinks he's worth more than he is. I'd love to eat crow but I just don't see him accepting a situational bench defender role at this point in his career

it's really sad when sochan is parked in the corner and 1) the defense is leaving him wide open so they can crowd the paint and 2) even his teammates hesitate to pass it to him. at this point, jeremy's value is his ability to defend several positions and as a cutter.

Lonnie Walker had a handful of significant playoff performances for the Lakers, and all that got him was a deal with the post-KD/Harden/Kyrie Nets, then a short stint in Philly and now he's in Europe.

Jeremy might be the kind of guy you bring in a matchup versus Luka in the playoffs and he could show up with some key defensive performances... but would that be enough to give him longevity in the NBA?

I see Jeremy as kind of the Bizarro world version of Lonnie. Sochan brings defensive flashes whereas Walker brought it on offense, but both are inconsistent and not reliable.

Kelnotjustdoneyet is the closest thing we have of an enforcer, a PO team needs dat kind of guys tbh... I have never been a big fan but despite his limitations, he hits his FTs, has a very solid eFG%, does not TO the ball and is our best offensive rebounder, cannot ask for much more for a 20 mn guy off the bench. If he can do just that in POs thats some good value. His contract expires next year, he is not cheap but there is worst
Actually, Korndog is our best offensive rebounder.

What a historically bad draft by BWrong in 2022 and this was right after drafting Primo in '21.

Hopefully the Spurs just keep getting Top 5 lottery picks because I don't trust Wright's drafting outside of that tbh :st-lol:

I guess we should just waive Carter Bryant, then. Phoenix should immediately get rid of Devin Booker.

I believe Juniors and Seniors already have the physical build and understanding of their game. Just shoot and play solid defense—that’s all it takes. Sometimes we bring in Sophomores who are steady, high-floor but low-ceiling players. Our big upside guys are Wemby, Harper, and Castle. It’s about REPLENISHING, not REBUILDING, for the next decade, God willing.

As expected, he has no role in the rotation with Kornet back. They're shoehorning him into spot minutes for now in an effort to placate him and because Harper is out, but how long will that appease him?

Best to look to package him with Olynyk before their salary slots disappear.

Sochan has regressed significantly this year. He is wildly inconsistent, can't rebound all of a sudden, and somehow became a worse scorer. He can still defend and set a couple of screens but that's the extent of what he can do.

Sniffer Twitter is going through some things. He’s still “important” to an 8-2 team that has done better without him and shame on Mitch for suppressing him.

Someone's gotta get the donuts while the rookies are on IR or in Austin. That's important, right?

Luke Kornet looks like the nail on the coffin of his Spurs career

His surprising ability to play alongside Wemby is going to severely limit Sochan's minutes

This.

And honestly... the success of Wemby and Korndog together makes me think we need another backup C (who isn't Bismack)

I actually think it’s the accession of castle that cuts in his playing time. The primary point of attack defender role is taken.

Yeah especially with Castle as the POA defender Sochan has no place on this team right now. He did provide some good minutes defensively against Durant so he's not devoid of worth... But he looks lost almost every time he touches the ball and he also seems confused about defensive schemes at times. When he contributes you can see the sketch of a valuable player, he can be impactful and he made some nice passes the other day. We're stuck with him for now so I hope he figures it out but it looks pretty grim.

Castle might be the POA defender...but against good teams with multiple POA (OKC with SGA and Jaylen William, Houston with Amen and KD, LA with Lebum, Luka and Reeves), Sochan's defense will be needed for these team

He had a long break from competitive basketball so being a bit rusty does not help probably. He still can't/won't shoot it seems. At this moment in time I think even he himself doesn't believe in his 3.
His role as a main defender is squeezed hard between Kornhub as rim defender when Wemby sits and Castle as main POA defender. I like him, I am Polish as well but I can see that his fit on this team is really poor with so many average at best shooters around him. For his sake I hope that Spurs will find him a new team full of shooters where he would be able to shine as defender and cuter if they will decide to trade him or that someone will buy into his D next summer. Or that he will stay and play smaller role for a smaller money but will win a few rings for a consolation prize. After all it's about having a few millions more or less but still being well financially vs being a fucking NBA champion or not being at all. I'd choose lesser money and titile but he is young and all life is in front of him.

Re: KJ. If he took a big pay cut to stick around, that's actually not a bad precedent for other players on the team to see.. I'm not as focused yet on how he'll do in the playoffs more about what his salary would be because I don't mind him sticking around as long as it's not a dumb contract. He might be someone that the 19 year olds look up to. Hard to say.
