News Official 2025-2026 Buyout Thread

I kept hearing rumors that Chris Middleton or Marvin Bagley would be waived by the Mavs. I'd be open to either of those being signed by the Spurs for the rest of the season were that to happen. Or, if the Kings decide to shed some payroll, there are a couple of folks who wouldn't be bad pickups for strengthening the bench.

I can't imagine we'll leave that roster spot open.

Meh, would have been too many personalities in the locker room at that point. Should have retired last year after he played all 82.

Can't deny that he had a positive impact on guys like Castle/Wemby/etc. that has helped this season but the asshole schtick becomes tiresome after a while especially when he's not a viable rotation player anymore.

No idea why the Clippers decided to sign him knowing full well how he is in the locker room to pair with two guys who probably couldn't give a single fuck about anything he had to say in Nephew and Harden :st-lol:
I heard CP3 was coaching the players to do things counter to what the coaching staff was telling them. Who knows, maybe he looked at Kawhi wrong.

Interesting that the Clips went on their winning streak after he was cut.

If Spurs add a player, this player must be fine with not playing in most game.

For example, Haywood Highsmith is a fine player and seems to be finally healthy but I'm not sure he is willing to sign with Spurs for barely playing. He might be looking at a team that will allow him to play more to get a better contract this summer.

Middleton would have been especially interesting had Barnes been traded. He's another vet with championship experience, and he likely has a good relationship with Keldon Johnson due to their Olympic run. Even with Barnes, having a similar player to him wouldn't be bad. It doesn't fill the holes in Barnes' game, but it does provide insurance in case Harrison struggles in a game. I also think he'd still be good for Vassell, Castle, Harper and Bryant to learn perimeter defense from.

I've been a Bagley fan since his draft, so I'd be down with the Spurs signing him. The issue is that he doesn't shoot well, which means he's basically a center. He's still spry and agile, so he might be the big who'd fit best with Wemby. But I think the inability to put another big next to Kornet is the bigger handicap. Luke only had average mobility, and that means he has to choose to give up a lot of ground during perimeter action or leave the paint undefended. Having a power-forward with legit weakside rim protection would allow Luke to commit to stopping penetration, which means fewer breakdowns down the line.

Ideally, the 15th man could do a few of the good things both Middleton and Bagley do to at least some extent. The issue is that guys who even have a chance of being that kind of player are worth their weight in gold. Where's Ryan Richards when you need him?

Bagley was a weird case. He was a young draftee that profiled like a 21-22 year old. He was picked 2nd overall in 2018, and as a rookie, he dropped 14 points and 7 boards. Not bad. As a second year player, he dropped 14 points and 7 boards. As a 3rd year player, and stop me if this is familiar, he dropped 14 points and 7 boards. No 2nd or 3rd year bump, at all. Now, this is back in the days where if you didn’t have a major injury, and were not named Anthony Bennett, you got a max second contract if you were a high draft pick. In one startling moment of clarity, Sacto decided they didn’t want to pay a max contract for 14/7, so they salary dumped him halfway through season 4.

Yeah, at this point, you can't sign Bagley for upside. You have to value him for what he can do now. So long as the contract reflects that and he's not an issue in the locker room, there's nothing wrong with that kind of player. But you can't look at him and go "Man, if we could just get him to shoot threes, he'd be such a great piece," because you probably can't, and he probably won't.

Middleton or Batum in case Barnes reverts to Mr. 10% in the playoffs.

I doubt if the Mavs will waive Bagley. I think they value him. If anything, they will try to find out buyers for Daniel Gafford in the offseason and try to replace him with a cheap contract for Bagley who will be their Center till Lively recovers and gets back onto the court.

Middleton seems done. Batum is even worse.

On the other hand, if the Jazz waive Jusuf Nurkic...I would think he is a useful candidate for the Spurs to pick up. Better than Biyombo or Olynyk, I think.

Saw something about spurs signing Juancho Hernangomez as Sochans replacement for the rest of the season, duno if real though.

Bagley looks like a real NBA player who will probably play for 6-8 years in this league, especially now that he's shaken the stigma of being a busted #2 overall pick.

Mavs seem intent on keeping both Marvin and Middleton, for whatever reason.

Highsmith is about the only guy on the buyout market I would've been excited about. Coming off meniscus surgery is tough, but if he can become the player he was before, he's a huge asset. This is the guy who locked up Jason Tatum in the playoffs. Would've been a low risk gamble.

Will be curious what his deal ends up looking like. Multi-year seems risky unless those are some non-guaranteed years

Just give Kevin Love some pennys. He is a fun dude and may be able to teach the bigs something. Should also be ok with not really getting minutes.
