Will the 2026 Hawks Swap Convey?

It’s early this season. I’m sure Magic will come around. Just have to get their defense back into shape. This kind of thing happens to a few good teams every year.

I thought Bane would be a good fit, not going to lie, and I still think he will contribute to the Magic but he is definitely off to a rough start. To top it off the trade itself is such a massive overpay. 3 unprotected picks, including one from the loaded 2026 draft with swap rights with WASHINGTON (and Suns, but come on the Whizz?), plus a top 2 protected swap in 2029 is just insane. I personally won't give up the 2026 with swap rights with the Whizz alone for Bane, let alone all of the other stuff.

Orlando has good players, problem is 1) fit: they built a roster that has talent but doesn't mesh well 2) payroll. They basically paid everyone like they're a tier above their actual contributions: Banchero, Franz Wagner, Suggs, even Bane who they traded for is overpaid, they extended Jonathan Isaac, etc.

When you combine 1+2 in a cap conscious era you get an underperforming team with reduced flexibility, they probably need to take a step back to take two forward, like say trading Banchero for several pieces and assets, maybe to a team like Chicago, Sacramento, New Orleans, etc.

Honestly this may be an interesting cautionary tail for the Spurs, as their approach to team building failed in some of the same areas the Spurs are suffering from: overpaying own players and underestimating shooting and fit in the modern NBA which means you're capped below your talent level would suggest. Spurs top end players have higher upside IMO, but still may fall short of their full potential if the FO isn't careful in the next couple of years.

MEM gonna trade Ja and come out of this season with a nice looking quick rebuild... perfect for the Las Vegas Grizzlies to make a deep playoff run in their inaugural season.

WTF is the matter with Orlando? Why are they failing to thrive? They have the pieces they need in Paulo and Franz.

I am just not a believer of Paolo. Using stats from last year, you can see he is a:
  1. High usage (1st on team, 6th in the league in USG%)
  2. Low efficiency chucker
    • 8th on the team, and 386th in the league out of 569 players in EFG%. 5th and 332nd in TS%
    • 11th on the team and 327th in AST/TO
    • 11th on the team and 358th in AST ratio
    • 7th on team and 265th in league in TO ratio.
  3. Mediocre defender at best
    • Last on his own team last year in DRTG
    • 3rd last in STL%
    • 7th in BLK% behind Suggs ,Fultz, and Cole Anthony, like WTH?
  4. Average rebounder
    • 105th in DREB% in the league, 5th on his own damn team
    • 7th on team and 354th in league in OREB%
  5. Last on the team in giving up points to the opponents off turnovers (540 in the league, and I admit this ties with the fact that he is a high usage player)
  6. Last on the team in giving up 2nd chance points (503th in the league, granted he plays a lot).
  7. Decent creator - 2nd on team and 85th in league in unassisted % of 2FGM, 1st and 17th in unassisted % of 3FGM. 1st and 31st overall in unassisted % of FGM.
Note: For team rank, I visually removed low usage players, those who played a few games or like 10 mpg. But for league rank, I didn't as I just left all the players in.

I mean, I would pay him to be a 2nd option on the team, but he is not a max guy earning close to $50M a year.

be nice to see the season's first triple OT game
