Spurs Third-String Center Discussion

We are looking at Biyombo for his short comings, but they probably hoped Jeremy would be the third or fourth string center. Oly has probably regressed as well this year. It happens.

It'll be interesting to see if this recent victory over Oklahoma makes the cautious front office reassess the timeline.

So again, if Victor isn't playing (AGAIN), why are the Spurs not making it a priority to try and get a better 3rd string center?

Did he play any games for the Austin Spurs? If Memphis have signed him, does that mean he can't play for the Spurs, or does he go back to the Spurs if they release him?
He’s Austin Spurs gleague property, but can be called up for one or two 10 day contracts, or even signed to an NBA contract by another team. If his 10 days runout, he reverts to Austin.

OK, thanks, so unless Memphis sign him further than the 10 day, he's back under the Austin Spurs. Is two 10 day contracts the max he can sign for with any team/s combined? Does he have to be signed outright if he gets called up a third time?

I think it’s any one team. They can’t actually call him up a third time because a call up is a 10 day. They can sign him to an NBA contract initially, after one 10 day, after two 10 days, or not at all.

One guy I was hoping to get in the 2nd round last year, but he pulled out of the draft was Condon from Florida. He’s a C/PF, good rim protection, excellent rebounder and very high BBIQ. His advanced metrics on defense are really good. I don’t know where he is mocked this year, but I really like his game for a back up role.
IDK I kinda prefer sin condon and the pull out when I back a chick up and role her over

Watching the knicks game with both Robinson and KAT in foul trouble

Their third string center, Hukporti, a 58th pick on a minimum contract.
7 footer, 2.2 blocks per 36 min +1,5 DBPM. Useless otherwise (-5 OBPM, 58% FT%)

There has to be such profile in the G league or in the 2nd round of the draft

And it would still be an big upgrade over washed Biyambo

Still can’t believe the team didn’t feel Bassey would be better than Biyombo as third big. There must have been something about him that team really didn’t like… seemed like he was a hard worker and Mitch was complementary of him in interviews so it’s a little surprising.

Seems like Koloko might also be that guy, but the Grizz snatched him up from us. We need to stop trying to sneak guys in on G-League deals to try to prove themselves and just get them on two-ways while we can in Ingram’s spot. I see zero future for him in this league and fail to see the point of him being on a two way any longer.

How urgent is another big now? Is there anyone better than Olynyk, and at what price?

I'll suggest Day'Ron Sharpe again.
He's been doing good work as a backup in Brooklyn.
Under contract for this and the next season, $6M.

I'm not sure we can get it done for Sochan and SRPs, though.

At the very minimum I hope to see a C signed two a two-way in place of Ingram.

Bismack seems like a good dude but it’s malpractice to not release him and bring in someone else (I’ll once again point out Bassey is available) at this point.

Trading for a 3rd string C might seem excessive, but if Wemby’s going to miss a month I think it’s worth it.

On Vecenie's last podcast he mentioned that he knows that not every team even has a Pro Personnel Scouting department... which is crazy to me. I don't know if the Spurs do or not... but in reality this really shouldn't be reliant on Wright. We should have pro scouts who are feeding him targets for these kinds of roles.

Sir, all this time i thought the Spurs FO had the best scouting staff in pro sports.......?

Drummond? He makes 5 million and expiring. I understand the Sixers will look for moves that help them considering the tax.

if guys aren't even signed to 2 ways and are just sitting at home, there's a reason for it.

Fun fact: No player in any league has ever gone from out of the league to performing well, because talent evaluators are 100% perfect at their jobs.

It's time to make a decision for Spurs:
If Biyombo isn't waived by January 7th, his contract will become guaranteed for the rest of the season. Same is true for Waters.

Since Biyombo is currently Spurs' fifth string center behind Wembanyama, Kornet, Olynyk and Sochan, Spurs might waive him and not replace him with a center.

A possible scenario is Spurs waiving Biyombo and letting the 15th roster spot open until the February trade deadline. Spurs are right now $5.7M below the tax and if they waive Biyombo without replacing him, they will be $6.9M below the tax. Spurs might want to keep that flexibility for a potential trade at the deadline involving Sochan/Olynyk/McLaughlin/Waters that will raise their team salary.

While Bismack seems like a great team guy that the organization apparently values, I would not be shocked at all if both sides are already well aware of this outcome and the Spurs are just taking it to the Jan 7 deadline to maximize Bismack's money. Then maybe he transitions to a FO role similar to how Gorgui Dieng did?
