With the previous Wemby Block Challenge 50 having just been completed after 140 games, it's time to step it up a notch and create…

The Wemby Block Challenge 2.0

The challenge now is to catch… 100 all-stars!

De'Aaron Fox was blocked while playing in Sacramento. He is now helping Wemby in his quest to block them all.

This is a significant challenge, as there are currently only 19 All-Stars available, some of whom play little, are injured, or are even inactive. By definition, the All-Stars from the Eastern Conference are harder to catch.

The 19 current All-Stars available:

  1. Kristaps Porziņģis (Atlanta Hawks)
  2. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics)
  3. LaMelo Ball (Charlotte Hornets)
  4. Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers)
  5. Darius Garland (Cleveland Cavaliers)
  6. D'Angelo Russell (Dallas)
  7. Al Horford (Golden State Warriors)
  8. Fred VanVleet (Houston Rockets)
  9. Kawhi Leonard (Los Angeles Clippers)
  10. Ben Simmons (Los Angeles Clippers)
  11. Bradley Beal (Los Angeles Clippers)
  12. Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers)
  13. Tyler Herro (Miami Heat)
  14. Jalen Williams (Oklahoma City Thunder)
  15. Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic
  16. Jrue Holiday (Portland Trail Blazers)
  17. Zach LaVine (Sacramento Kings
  18. Kevin Love (Utah Jazz)
  19. Khris Middleton (Washington Wizards)

For reference, here is the link to the previous challenge.

The challenge has now got the whole world buzzing, so how is it going?

At every home game featuring a team with an All-Star player to catch, the Spurs announcer will remind Wemby of the need to challenge him by playing a few notes of the Pokémon theme song, “Gotta Catch 'Em All” and by saying that's a "Wemby Block Challenge day": free baguettes and croissants for everyone if the All-star is caught!

For their part, the Jackals will proudly wave an All-Star banner with a Pokémon body and sing “Blockemon, it's you and me, I know it's my destiny” to encourage Victor to block the player in question, followed by “gotta catch 'em all” or “there's no better team” or “in a world we must defend.”

And if the all-star is blocked, three notes of the song will be played by the arena announcer (unless it's during the last quarter). Being a good sport, I'll leave it up to the Jackals to decide on the type of celebration.

All credit for the success of this challenge will go to the mental health facility that follows me... and Victor's athletic abilities.

Every year, new All-Stars are announced. Only a handful of newcomers. To succeed in the challenge, the league will have to announce around 30 new All-Stars in addition to the 20 or so who are still active. Over ten years, it's doable for Victor. This should make catching another “Blockemon” even more precious than it already is. An event to be celebrated as it should be every time it happens. Like the birth of a new all-star available.

A few fun facts about the first Wemby Block Challenge:

- He blocked All-Stars and multiple champions Curry, Thompson, and Wiggins in his first preseason matchup, while Draymond Green would elude him for another two years (47th out of 50).

- He caught Kyrie Irving in the first minute of his first regular season game in his rookie season.

- The next on the list, Devin Booker, was also blocked a week later in the first play of the game.

- He blocked the league's multiple best defender, Rudy Gobert, three times in the same game during their first matchup.

- He blocked Ja Morant (#17) in the first minute of their first matchup.

- He blocked Scottie Barnes three times in the same quarter on February 13, 2024.
