Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

For all of the talk here about Wemby not progressing or being better than he was as a rookie or sophomore...

Points per 36: Up to 30.3 from 26.3 last year
TS%: Up to 62.4% from 59.4%
FTA per 36: Up to 9 from 4.5
Rebounds per 36: Up to 13.7 from 11.9 (TRB% up above 20 for first time in his career, also leading the league in DRB% at 33)
TOV%: Down from 13.7 last year to 11.8 this year while USG% is up from 30.4 to 32.2
PER: Up to 28 from 24.2 last year
BPM: Up to 8.9 from 6.5 last year

I'm not saying there has never been reason to gripe on Wemby's play this year, and I totally agree some more consistency is needed if we're going to throw him in with that upper echelon of guys in this league...but we really shouldn't take what he's given us thus far for granted. Averaging 30/14 per 36 on efficient shooting while being pretty easily the best defender in the league is absurd stuff. Add in the fact that he just turned 22 and has had to deal with some injuries/minutes restrictions on top of that :st-lol:

tl;dr: This guy is really good and I have no idea what he'll look like in another 2-3 years.
The only reason there's this perception that Wemby didn't progress because of his per game averages but what nobody is taking into account is that Wemby is playing less minutes per game even than in his rookie season. For anyone that has actually being paying attention, the progress is evident.

Man I must have blocked it out... but people were actually arguing Wemby hasn't progressed?

Do people even watch the games? skin20's inane posts don't count.
Definitely have seen multiple people frustrated with Wemby's "lack of development"...granted it's usually in game threads when tensions are high but yeah :st-lol:

I didnt say he didn’t progressed. What im saying is he is so inconsistent and also the organization is fcking his stats big time through load management .

Hopefully after the allstar break he better start playing 34-35 minutes a game. So he can up his stats and have a legitimate chance at MVP and all nba first team.

Wemby needs to play atleast 25 games of the last 28 games left to be eligible for the awards.

This feels doable. I was skeptical after the calf strain and despondent after the knee hyperextension, so it feels good to be where we are right now.

if I want to play devil's advocate, he should be available more. Having great per 36 minutes averages doesn't really matter if you don't play 36 minutes, what counts is how much you contribute in the minutes you play. You might play great during 25 minutes and not have the stamina to continue playing at that level during 36 minutes. If he is the star of the team, he should play a minimum of 32 minutes a game. I'm hoping that his minutes will ramp up after the ASG.

And his consistency is still an issue, January was just one game 15 points- one game 30 points and repeat.

But overall he is finding his spots more easily this year, I still feel that another 10 pounds of muscles would help down low

With injuries to soo many NBA players including top ones, does not bother me one iota if Spurs Med Team is limiting Wemby.
He is still on the very low end of pounds per square inch.
All things being equal i am loving his per minute progress.

Haliburton, Donutcic, Tatum, Joker, SGA and all the other quad and ham strains.......
I do not consider modern day players wimps, do think something (whatever it is) is causing more injurys so fine by me if Spurs are keeping Victon on the court for 28 a game vs 0 per game out injured.

No to mention that he has to play 24/28 remaining games. He’s not going to get much rest,so limiting his minutes is the way to go.

Counterpoint: if you told me the Spurs would be 2 games back in the loss column the top seed in the west with Wemby playing 29.0 mpg before the ASB... I'd take that 10 times out of 10. Sounds like the Spurs are successfully load managing their star to be fresh for the playoffs without sacrificing team success. Win-win.

True, but the big question is how is this load managing going to translate if and when his minutes increase? I get and understand managing his minutes for health reasons. His frame is unique and no one really knows how much wear and tear he can take. I'm sure/hope they'll start ramping up his minutes to the 32-35 range after the break. He is going to need the run as he has shown at times to tire out. Can't expect to just throw him in the playoffs playing big minutes. Overall the Spurs have a good squad that fortunately allows them to not ride Vic into the ground for wins. But we all know the playsoff are a different animal and he will definitely be needed to play big minutes and perform big. At the end of the day... :st-flag:

I feel like his loads been ramping up little by little recently. A couple of games above 30 min. The lakers game would’ve been stupid for him to play past the first half, I’m glad they let him get his 40.

I’m starting to trust the process re Wemby endurance 😨

I think we're already starting to see the ramp up. In two of the last 4 games before the ASB he played 33+ minutes. The other two games he put in 27 and 26 minutes and probably didn't need to. He's been routinely eclipsing 30 minutes over the last couple of weeks). Let's see what the load looks like coming out of the ASB.

injury happens you cant avoid it. If it happens it happens even if you play less minutes. If wemby get his max contract in the future. Spurs better play him atkeast 34 minutes a game. Because its not worth it paying him 60-80million a year playing 29minutes a game.

I think I finally know who this idiot is. It’s your pal gambit1990, @Sugus

Same level of annoyance, intentional trolling. Time to put this idiot on ignore.

:st-lol: that makes too much sense, lol. Had to change names to avoid the shame of that "worst future" thread following him around... But the terrible takes are unavoidable, lmao

I think Wemby standing next to Taco Falls solidifies that he is 7'6-7'7 and not 7'5. Don't know why the Spurs organization are so keen on hiding this fact.
Watch the video. Tacko is several inches taller
