Player The unfortunately low-ceilinged Shaolin monastery of Victor Wembanyama

which is stupid and arrogant. he said basically "it's not even close". Holmgren never talked about him. Never said anything bad. It's just Wemby who created this rivalry thing because he always behaved differently against him, otherwise there would be absolutely no reporter bringing the topic on his interviews.

what ? he was offended that Holmgren was in the race for ROTY ? that's it ? well, he deserved to be in this race, he was very good and Victor deserved to win, everything's OK.

Oh and Holmgren is a very very good player. smart, efficient, very complete. and is a key contributor on a champ and the best team of the league right now. in his year 3.

:st-cry:

Did Wemby and Spurs get a cease and desist letter from Vikings for the SKOL chant ?
I know about the SKOL chant but why are you speculating that the Spurs got a cease and desist letter? Did something happen?

Just joking but that is what I immediately thought of when he started the drum. I wonder if other sports teams have used something similar. But I could see someone taking legal action.

Here we go again, Chet and Victor have history before the NBA.. Chet talked shit to Victor after a france USA game iirc, Victor did not like it at all then he gets offended when people make comparaisons. Not sure what’s difficult to understand. Also muricans getting all worked up because a French is fucking arrogant, give me a break.. murican nba players invented cockiness and shit with Shaq looking down people getting dunked on or curry antics but there nobody is complaining
Did Chet talk shit to victor? No one says anything about that. If that’s true, then I understand how victor could take it so personally.

No American is getting worked up because a French guy is being arrogant. Chill out

chet has wisely been trying to downplay the existence of any rivalry going back to their ROTY race. he doesnt want his entire career to be a comparison to wemby.

In front of his mom.

Oh... he definitely GAF. He's got it out for Chet and I think it's awesome. All that crap at the beginning of his rookie year where Chet was leading in the rookie ladder, and then Chet showed up and Wemby made him look like a 7th grader blocking his crap.
He gives a fuck but not for the reasons sold to the public.

Chet is more like collateral damage in the message Vic is sending to the media forcing a non existent rivalry.

I can see how it can be taken the wrong way by other fans, but this is kind of the same situation as how Jordan took offense to Drexler in 92 when everyone was comparing the two before the finals. Same position, similar build, similar style of play. Drexler never talked about Jordan or did anything to him, Jordan just got offended that the media compared the two and went full tryhard to show that there were levels to this. It's the same concept here. Is it a little arrogant? Yeah, but I doubt Wemby has anything against Chet personally, he's just trying alter what he views as a mistaken public perception that there's some similarity between the two. You can say that Jordan was a champion already and could talk his shit, but Drexler was also better than Chet is currently as well.
That's a perfect comparison.

I'll be honest, i find the jackals and the drum severely cringey, but that's just me.
It's just the start, you can't bring culture in a few months like that, it'll grow,

I guess you must not be American and comparing to euros or south americans fans but it's enough for the American public who'snot used to.

what did holmgren do to wembanyama, seriously ? that's so cringe to see him doing his worse MJ arrogant disrespectful trash talking impersonation every time it comes to Holmgren. tonight, a french reporter asked him if he sees his matchup against holmgren as a true rivalry and what he thought about him as a player. He didn't even answer about the player that holmgren is and just said: "no, there is no rivalry. Sportingly, there's just no comparison between us.", using in french an expression making it very clear that they're not on the same level. Weird from him who is usually a class act......
I took this as Wemby saying we are not on their level yet, in a humble way... but maybe I misunderstood

I mentioned this before and someone (don't remember who) rightfully brought up that it's Americans who are arrogant (which is very true). But the perception of "French arrogance" is different, for whatever reasons, and there are some Americans who it rubs the wrong way (personally IDGAF and I find it funny that anyone does). It's like Sacha Baron Cohen's character in Talladega Nights. This French (perceived as arrogant) F1 driver (a sport perceived as arrogant from Bud guzzling NASCAR fans, especially before Netflix made F1 popular in the US)... when the Ricky Bobby character is the epitome of arrogance the entire time.

I love Wemby, and maybe it's just Spurs colored glasses but I actually see thoughtfulness and humility in some of the comments that people perceive as arrogance. He's an extremely talented and smart young man... it's easy for someone to be arrogant when you have those gifts, but he doesn't flaunt them. At the same time, it's not like he can just ignore them.

It would be funny to see the Vikings try it, considering they stole it from the Iceland National Football team

The perception of arrogance comes from their directness, IMO. Straight & to the point, no dancing around on eggshells trying to not hurt feelings. They probably don't have any intentions of being disrespectful, but the directness can be off-putting to those not used to it.

Yeah for sure... that's why I always say "perceived" arrogance because it's obviously just a cultural difference. I don't think any culture is really more arrogant than any other (though they certainly have arrogant individuals among them), it's just cultural differences.

didn’t deserve to be in the race at all either. Not wemby’s fault Holmgren cooked his own rookie year with the lisfranc injury. Fragile too, broke his pelvis falling to the ground last year. Glorified role player
Chet was drafted a year earlier, and has only played 5 more games. He was behind in the game count until Wemby’s calf issue.

OKC is going to hate his contract in 2-3 years.

Only those who are seen as potential competitors are perceived as arrogant. I see this as the difference between authority and authoritarianism. Someone who has authority doesn't need to say they are better or that they must be respected. If they have authority, it's obvious. Others speak for them.

If he's better than Chet and there's no question about it, he wouldn't need to say so. If he says so, it means there's competition.

Only people who are unsure of the authority they might have show arrogance. Arrogance is not a sign of quality, it is a sign of weakness. Parisians are considered arrogant because they have an opinion on everything and perhaps live in the capital of the world, if we take the last five centuries into account. And just saying this is an admission that it is already on the way to being overtaken by other capitals. The French are similarly perceived as arrogant, also when others imagine that they invented three-quarters of the chic and sophisticated things on the planet. Just look at the number of English words composed of “French ***”. So as soon as a French person appears, it's this whole “chic” heritage that shines through. It doesn't take much to confirm the cliché.

If we are less inclined to view Americans through this lens, it is because they have been world leaders since 1945. However, we are increasingly hearing that they are arrogant with China taking the lead and a stupid fascist as president. We already see this with MAGA, a slogan that literally states the obvious. In rhetoric, what we specify is what is not self-evident. Before, America was the world's greatest power, so if we need to say Make America Great Again, we are chasing away the implicit obviousness, and what we are announcing highlights the opposite of what we are trying to say.

Victor only makes a fool of himself when he talks about himself, when he says that when he comes back he'll be the best player in the league, when he says that Chet is no match for him. He's coming back from injury, Victor should understand that these statements are above all an admission of weakness. What we specify is what is not self-evident.

If everyone was convinced that Victor would be the best player once he returned, he wouldn't need to say so. If everyone was convinced that Victor and Chet were two diametrically different talents, he wouldn't need to state the obvious that there's no contest. That's arrogance. And arrogance is the expression of the opposite of what is claimed. There are fools who constantly display arrogance and self-confidence. There's no need to point out their stupidity. Victor is intelligent. But he's also young, he's still developing, and he lacks confidence. He tells himself these things to reassure himself that he is what many think he could be, but is not yet. Rushing things won't make him stronger. It will only reveal his fragility and impatience.

And indirectly, it's likely that the coach understood this and took it into consideration when deciding to start him on the bench. Victor would not have understood the message. San Antonio is neither New York, Los Angeles, nor Paris. Humility is required. And for now, the other players on the team are showing him how much the Spurs play as a team. That's their DNA. He should leave statements about masculinity or power to those who are insecure about it. Otherwise, by the end of the season, he'll be able to walk across Greenland.

I would add a less rhetorical and more psychological explanation. Victor has to be “unique.” Chet and Victor are great skinny inside players with outside skills. We're not talking about talent, we're talking about Victor's uniqueness:

“Are you the only condor on earth?” “Absolutely. Oh, look! An albatross! Isn't it ridiculous!” “But I didn't see it. Couldn't it be another condor?” “No, it's an albatross. I'm the only condor on earth.” “You're right, this condor can fly. You're here, talking and talking.”

Victor is better... yes, well, can he fly as a start? Prove what a condor is capable of doing in the air not in press conferences.
