Something like that.Thought this was a player thread title at first like the Roadside Shrine of Sochan's Jumpshot Improvement Uncertainty
Ben Simmons hasn’t taken a regular season 3 pointer in 117 games over four seasons. They’re not the same.As has been said many times you can find videos of ben Simmons nailing 3s.
It'll be interesting.
I hope I'm wrong, but I'm coming around to the belief that Sochan's days with the Spurs are numbered.
He's good not great in many areas and a bit of a tweener SF/PF. He's a good but not great athlete, has good not great length, good not great ball handler. Good, but not great rebounder.Maybe more than good at individual defense.
Unfortunately he's terrible at one critical skill- shooting.
Bowen could shoot the 3.I could live with sochan with his current shooting if he was a dedicated defender/rebounder. Like Bowen. Yes, in this league you almost need scorers on all 5 positions but I still believe defense and rebounds wins the championship. And then rely on your top 2 guys to score when you are in a scoring drought.
Yeah honestly it was good fun when these were Poland videos but when I saw like 5 trainers in spurs gear helping him with his nonsense, gotta say I didn’t love it.Is this really on Sochan, though? Why wouldn't the Spurs prioritize developing in the skills that actually had an impact in his game before trying to make him something he was never going to be? I mean, I'm sure he did practice shooting, not nowhere near enough it's apparent. He needs a halfway decent corner 3 and better connective passing to hang in the NBA, that alone probably gets him a 10+ year career, yet we're going into year 4 and there seems to be very little if any improvement there.
Most of his efficiency improvements last year came from using him better (i.e., cutting on his 3s, cutting to the basket more, being spoon fed buckets, etc) but you can't expect the team to sacrifice to make you look good long term. This usually happens when developing players in bad teams, instead of building a minimal set of skills to make you playable in a competitive context, they try to create stars where there are none. Just a role player usable in a playoff setting would be very valuable.
Spurs player development has been shit for a couple of years now. And tbh I don’t trust our current shooting guru. We were tied for 20th in the league in 3 point percentage. Not exactly lighting the world on fire.Is this really on Sochan, though? I'm hoping the coaching staff overhaul will yield some benefits on the development front. Sweeney is spoken very highly of in particular and if the Spurs improve like they should he could be on a fast track to fielding head coaching offers. Lets face it, Pop/Brown were stale/stagnant for several years now and seemed more interested in teaching these guys about life rather than basketball.Spurs player development has been shit for a couple of years now. But I got trashed at the other place for pointing out that Sochan should be practicing what he actually does in-game. And I was told that this is the new age way of shooting. That the old ways no longer work…
Well yeah, but also a lot of players drafted after him popped up: Jalen Williams (12), Jalen Duren (13, though I'm not a big fan), Tari Eason (17), Christian Braun (21), Walker Kessler (22), Andrew Nembhard (31), etc. So looking back that draft turned out pretty bad. To be fair, I was on board with all 3 Spurs picks (even though I also liked Tari Eason, Jalen Williams -but not at 9-, etc), so I'm not really the one to point fingers here, but it's hard not to look back on the Spurs drafts from 2018 to 2022 and feel kind of sick with the outcome (Lonnie, Samanic, Keldon, Vassell, Primo, Sochan, Branham, Wesley). Really depressing stuff. Most of the disappointment revolves around his draft position. Which is completely justified. It really comes down to what an extension would look like.
He would make for a great bench player on any contending team. He’s not a 30+ minute starter.
But could be impactful at 20-22 minutes off the bench.
I know most would rather trade him and that’s fine but I have no problem with him as the 7th or 8th man if the contract is reflective of that.
During the second round I was looking for any single person that he would have gotten minutes over and couldn’t find one. No wing on any good team is as limited as he is with shooting and overall ball skills. He’s more likely to be in Europe 5 years from now than he is getting rotation minutes on a contenderMost of the disappointment revolves around his draft position. Which is completely justified. I wanted Duren but the collective kinda turned me into a Sochan fan at the time. But I’d rather look forward than to allow his draft position to cloud what value he does have.Well yeah, but also a lot of players drafted after him popped up: Jalen Williams (12), Jalen Duren (13, though I'm not a big fan), Tari Eason (17), Christian Braun (21), Walker Kessler (22), Andrew Nembhard (31), etc. So looking back that draft turned out pretty bad.
