Player The Lifelong Residency of the Ever-Important Heart and Soul of the Spurs, Keldon Johnson

Love the dude's attitude but I'll have to accept there's no hope if he keeps showing no progress.

In a normally driven franchise, KJ, Devin and Jeremy should be on their way out for the same reason.

But they're the last part of the friendly crew so... not happening smh
It’s hard to say keldon showed no progress this year.

Those who complained about why the team had KJ bringing the ball up the court (ever) should see the reasons why. Mitch went small with Keldon intended to draw Porzingis out of the paint in more of a ball-handling role and it worked really well. They've been intentionally wanting him to be capable in that area.

I don't care how flawed he is, but Keldon blows both Vassell and Sochan out of the water in terms of meeting the median expectations of his draft position (29th vs. 11th and 9th respectively)

I don't think they will move him- mainly for cultural and sentimental reasons- but KJ would definitely generate far more interest and trade value for them at deadline or the offseason.

Vecenie podcast today talking about unsung heroes of the top teams. Vassell is their guy, starts around the 40:40 mark

I would actually argue it’s Keldon. Per 48 minutes, here are the splits across the two and other notables:

Devin 23/5/3.5 on 44/38/86
Keldon 26/13/3.5 on 58/33/81
Julian 18.5/9/2.4 on 41/36/83
Barnes 19/5/3 on 50/42/88

Not the full picture, but Keldon’s rebounding and shooting % stick out. He has played less total min than Vassell (460 vs 630, which btw leads our team), but with Vassell on a heater lately I think he is getting media attention, and his big-shot style of play grabs more attention vs KJ’s bruising and OREBs.

Honestly, all 4 of those guys have been huge. Each of them filling an important role quite nicely. Devin has really stepped up in Wemby and Castle's absence. Keldon has been a rock off the bench all year.

Agreed tbqhwy. For the spot he was drafted at, the fact that he came here because Kabuttfuckingquitter cried hard enough to leave, and the fact that he pumps up the crowd more than anyone outside of Wemby, he's a keeper. I don't see the Spurs trading him any time soon as he's quite valuable in the 6th man role. Only thing is I wish his 3 ball was a bit more reliable, as his inside game is top 2 on the team.

I'm sure a losing streak will snap me out of it, but as a unit I'm starting to believe our role players are elite.

Keldon's play has me completely dumbfounded and stumped lol

his scoring is about on par with what we've seen for several year now. per 36, he's scoring 19 which is par the course for him, but he's doing that on only 13 FGA per 36. its not even that his 3-ball is any better. hes at 33% and is taking the fewest 3's since his 2nd year in the league. but he's getting 47% of his looks within 3 feet, which is by far a career high. his scoring touch with tough hooks against bigs is unlike what we've seen from him in the past, where it was all about being able to just bull through guys every time. and of course, the rebounding is excellent on both ends of the floor.

he has really figured out what he can and cant do and has been able to maximize his skillset in a team friendly way. now, will he continue to be making 58% of his shots from the fiel and 69% of his 2PA? probably not. but even if his efficiency comes down some, if he maintains this shot diet and continues rebounding like this... thats plenty good enough for his role

ive said it before but will continue giving @Chinook his flowers. i know he hasnt been too active here at the new place, but i distinctly recall him being among the voices saying keldon losing weight was a mistake and he's at his best playing the 4, whereas everybody else including myself thought him slimming down could help him play the 3 and be a better defender.

Keldon is currently 3 among forwards on offensive rebounding. The 2 above him (Amen Thompson; Dyson Daniels) average 11 more minutes per game than Keldon, who is averaging 24mpg.

To me offensive rebounding is about giving a shit and a commitment to making winning plays. I think this is a big part of the Keldon story this year.

Keldon is a great role player and most thought he wouldn't buy into such a system but he's bought into past systems with no complaint even if they over utilized him and put him in a position to fail. Big Body should be a Spur for life.

I've always liked Keldon, and have always seen him as the heart of the team. You can say this and that about him but he has not once complained about anything and always wants to do what's best for the team.

Ok Computer put his flag on Keldon mountain this year, so to speak, and called it. 6MOY candidate. Good call.

I also called Steph “bad man” Castle taking a huge motha fuckin leap this year too when others thought Fox would simply be head and shoulders above him. But I love them both, and I love this whole team! LFG!

Every winning team has a guy like Keldon on it. Spurs are a better team becuase Keldon has completely bought into his role and isnt trying to do to much these days.

So happy for the guy, plus he genuinely wants to be here. No doubt he will sign an extension as soon as he can and both he and the Spurs will be very happy at whatever the figure will be. (though some segment of the fan base will bitch because its what they do)

Changing his number to “0” last year was a bad luck move. Now he’s thriving with his old number back. Good shit, Keldon. Happy for him.

Mitch just called Keldon the heart and soul of the team in his presser. Mitch reads BB confirmed.
