Player The "It's My Time" Busted Clocktower of Devin Vassell

That‘s because his contract actually goes down once Wemby‘s extension kicks in. They decided to overpay him when they got capspace to have better value down the line. Not hard to figure out tbh
Ok but today he makes more money than guys on their 2nd deal who are a lot better than he is. The percentage math works exactly the same for those guys too, so I’m pretty sure that’s what people are not pleased with. Fast forwarding 3 years where maybe he’s paid in accordance with his abilities…maybe it’s easier to digest then, but that’s just a hypothetical.

Devin now @ +79 when on the court for the Spurs overall in 4 games. Double digit positive +/- in every game so far. Flawed stat to be sure, but historically this stat has hated him. I've been plenty critical of Devin leading up to this season, just want to check myself and recognize what he has done so far this year.

hes been picking his spots well for the most part. defers and just plays a clear secondary role when vic is out there, but does his part to take over a bit on those minutes with more reserves in

One possession last night he took the ball up the court and went straight to pulling up for a 3 with like 16 seconds left on the clock. Never considered sharing. And missed the shot.

But I think this is happening less often than years past.

Castle was doing that shit too. I’m just like guys you have a generational big man. Feed him the effing ball.

Finally they gave him the ball down the stretch and the game was over after that.

He seems to have a better shot selection when Wemby's on the court with him. When Wemby's off the court he has a quicker trigger, which to his credit has turned out okay so far.

That's very true and needed

That's very true. He goes off book a bit when Victor's not on the court. That is much, much better compared to what he used to do.

His return to productivity has been an amazing surprise to be honest. I give the coaching staff kudos for that. My biggest question for the season was actually if the coaches could seize the moment, and so far they have done that in the big picture aspect of coaching.

Hats off to him so far, like his defensive attention more than anything else, which I think was a bigger problem than his shot selection in the past.
A situation where a 4th option is best being a 4th option, and not a 2nd option.

Devin is playing quite well. He still has gone chucker mode (against the Pels) and every now and then in games. But it has gotten a lot better.

What happens though when Fox comes back and starts taking shots away from him? Does he maintain this energy on the defensive end when he isn’t shooting as much?

Well really I think it’s Castle I’m concerned about tbh. Bc Devin is playing like a 3rd option and Castle is kinda in no man’s land. What is Castle going forward?

in a drive/kick/swing/drive/kick/swing offense, castle is fine. He’s the 1st or 2nd action in those situations and will help move the defense around and capitalize on breakdowns.

If Fox does a hero-ball thing, castle suffers. But he’s not going to be allowed to do that.

this is why your other thread about trading players, castle is the correct choice. HEs a good to great prospect but do we pay him for his role as 3rd or 4rth banana after 2-3 max slots taken? everyone talks about dumping fox ASAP but with vassel turning a page it pushes vassel into high level rolepalyer that will be easier to fit than whatever Castles next contact looks like assuming his normal growth.

At some point we have to admit we might have to trade a young all star for role players because the CBA.

With Fox out and wemby on the bench that’s probably the right approach for him. Though they should probably start leaning on Harper more already

I don't understand why people think Castle will automatically get a max extension. Sengun didn't even get one and he was an All-Star at that point.

He's been looking good. Hitting some shots.
.458 3G% on 8 attempts per game.

sengün signed his extension in October of 2024, after year 3, and was selected for the 2025 ASG in year 4. His extension kicked in this year. You always sign it one year out.

He’s been great this year. Playing within his role and being more efficient. It’s a fair salary considering what was handed out this summer to the likes of Giddy and Kuminga.

That he’s the 4-5th best player or whatever and payed 2nd highest is a silly critique given the fact 3 of those guys are rookies. If they could the Spurs would absolutely max Wemby and possibly Harper now.

I have been saying for YEARS that it is impossible to judge some of these players under the offense Pop was running in the past. It was so fucking chaotic and non sensical that they were not set up to succeed. It is not surprise that the first year his system is gone a lot of the players suddenly look much better, Devin included. You can't put players into a pile of shit and then wonder why they don't smell like roses. They all still kinda look shit defensively but Wemby makes up for a lot of that so that doesn't worry me as much.

Aside from that, I think also playing with Harper is helping him a lot. I don't think any other single player has benefited from playing with a point guard like Harper as much as Devin. It is kind of wild what happens when he has someone who puts him in good spots to succeed. Both his PG and his coach.

Its early and I don't want to overreact, but this is a great start to the year.

Vassell has surprised me. It's looking like all the guy needed was some structure, accountability, and better teammates around him. I never found him very likable in seasons past, and now he's become likable. Even in his interviews he just seems like he now knows the role and is willing to thrive in it.

right. its ok to sign a rookie to a big extension without it paying out 50mil per year

The days of the “auto-max” are over for most teams. Nice to see teams and players actually negotiate. Obviously certain players won’t require much negotiation.
