Player The "It's My Time" Busted Clocktower of Devin Vassell

Big year for Devin. Theoretically a Fox-Vassell back-court should be pretty damn good.

I'm just unclear how they plan to use Castle at this point, especially if they are committed to also starting Barnes and Sochan. Assuming Steph off the bench to start the season?

People keep writing Barnes name on the lineup card in ink. The reality is that he was a salary dump by Sacto that happened to meet some short term needs. I see no way he is on the roster next year, unless he takes minimum, and a serious backseat, we have players that need minutes to figure, out if we keep them, and he’s not on that list. With the increased emphasis on defense,he becomes even more irrelevant.

Spurs will want to keep him because he's one of the best role models in the league, a professional that leads by example.
Never gets injured and is a plug and play wing for every system.
As I said many times, I'd like him to be our new Finley and stay until he retires. (I know Finley got traded to Boston in his final year.)

If he's willing to accept a bench role and around 14/2 to 18/2 extension, I'd keep him.

If we can get a better bench wing veteran, then by all means, make the upgrade, but I really like Barnes as the veteran leader.
I think he'll either stay or get a 24/2 or something from a tanking team that needs a mentor.

He hasn’t been a wing in a few years. Can’t defend the position. He can barely stay in front of mobile 4s.

He's a great shooting, poor rebounding 4.

Mitch starts him this year until Steph, Sochan or Champ displaces him in the SL (Bryant is too green). This kinda goes to the crux of the biggest flag with this team -- shooting with 3/4 size.

Next year, I agree, is another beast altogether. If HB remains on the team, it would have to be in another role.

I don’t see him as a part of the future, other than bench vet, so I don’t see the point in starting him. Yes,he can shoot, but he gives it all back on defense, and the boards.

You’re right, and I bet if Steph’s shot improvement is real, Mitch makes the swap sooner rather than later. At least I hope.

Not sure what Fox or Jeremy’s health status is right now, but my sense for Day 1 is they’d like to roll out a Fox-Vassell-Harnes-Sochan- Wemby SL to provide some decent shooting around VW.

I am not liking anything that I’ve seen from this dude or, more importantly, how the team is using him. Hope it’s a function of no Castle no Fox.
VYstradamus tbh.

This dude is not a winning player. I’ve actually liked what I’ve seen from Keldon so far because he’s adjusted his playing style as is playing off of his teammates as opposed to being heliocentric. Main Character is the opposite. He can’t adapt. He can’t not play his style. And he’s just so boom or bust that you’re going to always have him giving as much as he taketh away. There are no intangibles or non-box score type benefits associated with his play. He’s the epitome of empty calories when he’s at his best and a complete black hole at his worst. Actually, him getting paid 27 million per year is him being at his worst - which is going to be constant.

This dude just absolutely fucking sucks.

Defensively he was invisible today. Offensively for the most part i didn’t mind many of his decisions but he was just missing fairly open/easy looks.

If he’s not going to be an impact defender being an inconsistent shooter/scorer as he’s been for the last couple of years is frankly not good enough

He came out looking to dribble the air out of the ball, even though he was finally starting with a PG. Julian is there doing what Devin needs to do at 1/9th of the cost or whatever it is.

I don’t know what goes through this dude’s head. Just get open and only take easy shots. There will be many.

Vassell looks like he's flailing around in his movements. Over-exerting constantly. His days as a starter are numbered, I'd guess. He just don't look right out there. I will credit him for trying to play within the flow of the game and recognizing his teammates much better than in recent years. I just don't see an under-sized 3 like him making this team better. I don't recall which of my fellow Baseline Bums said it, but, Vassell looks like the dude who only practices difficult buzzer beating shots. He might do better on a team that needs a 2 guard and we get a more natural 3 back. Has anyone here heard about this guy in NO, TMIII?

Fox/Castle
Harper
Devin
Jeremy
Kornett

Is that anything as a 2nd unit? Might be decent (aside from the obvious). Small sample, but Harper has been keeping Devin under control more than any guard I’ve seen. If he can play off ball in this setting, with champ on the 1st unit, this sort of seems like a real squad.

The sooner he is off the team the better. He has zero IQ and minimal talent. Think about it. He was the highest paid guy on the team right? Before we extended Fox.

We drafted Victor who is obviously better than him. Then we drafted Castle who is already better than him. Then we traded for Fox who is way better than him. Then we drafted Harper who is better than him already.

Vassell keeps going down and down and down and down the pecking order every single year. It's time to cut the losses. Get rid of him asap

That’s actually wild to go from franchise player to 5th best in 3 years.

He was never the franchise player.
Being the best player on a bad team doesn't mean anything.
He was always a placeholder.

I'm not even sure he was better than Devin in 22-23 season.
We had Demar, Dejounte and Derrick before that.
I'd even say that Poeltl was our best player in 22-23, but he got traded at the deadline.

Put it this way, then. He went from #1 to #5 and is paid like a #2. And there’s no real chatter about shipping him out.

Off the top of my head I don’t know when a situation like this has happened - where a tank commander gets rewarded and stays on the team in a high paying role even though he’s been surpassed by other guys 4 times over.

The Championship Spurs were known to pass up a good shot to look for a great one. Devin does the opposite. He'll pass up a clean look to drive into the defense and take a stutter stop and hop, leaning sideways jumpshot.

Move to the open spots and your point guards will find you. Be opportunistic on offense and lock in on defense. That type of Devin would be very valuable to any team.

Tomorrow will be interesting in regards to Vassell. Will he play within the offense or will he see the absence of Fox as his time to be the number 2 or even 1b option to Wemby?

I think it's almost where they need to give up something to get rid of him. His ridiculous salary is bad for team morale given his underwater production to salary ratio, so to speak. How can Wright negotiate with anyone moving forward with the horrible precedent he set with Vassell? I'm mostly serious.

It’s such a weird thing. We know 100% that his abilities relative to his cost, and us not having a replacement in our development pipeline, means he needs to be traded before this contract runs out. We need more dudes who aren’t on rookie deals and we also can’t start Devin when it’s time to contend. So we all know how this ends and the FO probably does too. I wonder how much Devin is processing this.

Only 2 games, but the hate is far overblown. He's top 8 in net rating:

1. Mouhamed GueyeATL38.8
2. Svi MykhailiukUTA36.4
3. Dru SmithMIA33.7
4. Nikola JovićMIA31.3
5. Jaime Jaquez Jr.MIA29.9
6. Sandro MamukelashviliTOR28.6
7. Harrison BarnesSAS28.3
8. Devin VassellSAS28.3

and top 5 in defensive rating:

1. Mouhamed GueyeATL78.1
2. Sandro MamukelashviliTOR90.5
3. Jalen SuggsORL90.8
4. Marcus SmartLAL91.3
5. Devin VassellSAS91.9

Let's hope he can keep that up while shooting even better once Fox comes back.

With his cap hit declining and play possibly improving, we might decide he’s actually worth keeping around.

So many of you thought this was a good contract when it was announced, lol.
That‘s because his contract actually goes down once Wemby‘s extension kicks in. They decided to overpay him when they got capspace to have better value down the line. Not hard to figure out tbh
