Player The blessed howl's moving castle of Stephon Javonte

With Fox and Harper, Castle will have the opportunity to show his progress early in the season. It will be a lot of pressure for our ROTY to shoot, score, handle the ball but also defend.
I'd say this is a better situation for him because if he was the secondary ballhandler behind Fox he'd have more pressure to hit his shots.
Like this he'll be surrounded by Devin/Barnes/Wemby+1 and won't have to take as many shots, he'll just need to attack the paint and make the right decisions.

I believe that the competition will bring out the best in all 3 (Fox/Harper/Castle & maybe Vassell), but, especially Castle. My take on him is that he will reach close to 100% of his maximum potential as a pro. Worse shooting rookies have improved their shot over their careers. It will take a few years, but, he's well on his way. His IQ and versatility will allow him to adjust to our new schemes and contribute. There were moments last year of he and Wemby developing a nice 2-man game both offensively and defensively. With Wemby and Kornet as our rim protectors, everyone's defense should look better this year. I love his mean-mugging, all business demeanor, especially when compared to the smiling, goofy-ass days of the POF crew.

the issue is that the +1 won't be able to shoot

Per CBS "Castle banged his knee in a scrimmage Monday but is expected to be fine, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News reports.

Castle went to the locker room during the scrimmage but is expected to be available for Wednesday's preseason game against the Heat."

Let's hope it is nothing indeed... you would go slowly to have too many guards to lacking if he had to miss time
:st-lol:

Meh, , if the scans came back clean, it's most likely nothing.

It's a long, long season, and it hasn't even started - people shouldn't be assuming we'll have guard depth issues only because of some pre-season small injuries. All 3 guards may well be playing normally by the 5th-10th game, with 72 more to go.

Castle doesn't get enough love here because of the weak draft class he came from. I feel like he has the potential to surpass Fox as our clear #2 by the end of the season.

I love watching castle. But I don’t know what he is without a jump shot.

If he dials that in, though, he’ll be a freaking killer.

:st-lol: that would be awesome but we should hold our horses a bit here...

Yeah I don't know about that. I like the kid but Fox has been an all star level 25ppg player for awhile now. Castle has a looong way to go to get on that level

No dc23/dbestpro, he'll get the love when he proves he has a jumper or his offense equals mccains

A healthy Fox just has so much more on ball juice than Castle at this juncture. Fox gets by people and creates separation in a way Castle will never be able to. Castle just doesn't have an elite first step, though if he can develop a respectable jumper that would open up his drives significantly. His foul drawing rate is also very intriguing, we've seen guys become big time scorers with that quality.

Castle better be ready on all cylinders cause dude has some tough competition ahead.. i loved Harper debut

So our moving castle will play tonight, he should be in the SL with I suppose Vassell, Harper coming off the bench.. This "competition" between Harper and Castle will be great for the Spurs tbh... Defense and shoot will be the two aspects to look for

Years down the road I think we'll look back on a great story about the competition between Castle and Harper in 2025 and 2026. I've said it before, but this has to be a coach's dream to have these two guys to pit against one another to sharpen their games, steel sharpens steel and all that.

Well, I love Steph's game and want him to be the best version of himself, but he is still missing FTs and getting blocked at and by the rim. Yes it's one game. His three is looking confident and it's making a difference... Hopefully that's not a preseason mirage because I think that confidence can bleed into the rest of his game and unlock his full potential.

Castle had a solid first game, his offseason has not been ideal with his knee injury but he did well tbh... dat 2/5 FTs is cringeworthy but you cannot be mad about his performance

I agree with what you said. I was happy with his overall performance this game. He was also super disruptive to start the game on defense. The only thing I'm going to say is those free throws. I hate to say this, but free throw misses like that is the only thing that has me worried about his long term progress on his jump shot. For any good shooter, free throws are like a layup. Some of those misses are looking ugly. If he can be more consistent at the free throw line, then I'll be more confident in him becoming a better shooter.

yes, FT shooting is really cringy.. 72% last season that's TD level tbh... he needs to clean that up asap. I don't know any good shooter with a 70% FT. I looked at his defense quite a bit, I did not like the lack of effort and awareness last season after a great start. Hopefully he will stay dial up this season in that regard, yesterday was good in that regard.
