Primo was a bad swing lots of us called at the time, I don't know WTF they saw in him. I was in favor of picking Sochan, but TBH he was not a "swing" (to your credit, I remember you advocating for Duren, who turned out much better). Branham and especially Wesley, on the other hand, were swings that likely heavily influenced by the team's lack of talent at the time. But I do agree with your point about the obsession with measurables over guys who know how to play. The thing is, when we’ve missed on guys like Primo or Sochan, they’ve been big swings in the 9 or later picks, because we didn’t have The Guy yet. Houston was taking swings like that with top 4 picks in Green and Amen. Both OTE and the GLI were waiting rooms for kids who didn’t want to be coached in college to waste a year not being developed.
Trade back a few spots in 23, and grab Cason Wallace, a complete player from a high level program. Oh, but his anthropomorphics weren’t off the charts at the combine. Guess what? He’s leading the NBA in steals this year at 2.1, more that either if the supposed premium defender Thompsons. He can shoot the ball, too, and run the point.
PS: antropomorphics?
