Game Thread Spurs vs Jazz (Fri 10/10/25) [7:00PM CDT]

He could end up in the starting 5 with castle off the bench tbh
To me, it’s all about catering to individual strengths.

Between Castle and Harper, who is the better off ball player? It’s Castle. Who is the better point guard? It’s likely Harper, since from everything I’ve seen, Castle is focused on trying to be a 3-level scorer.

So why would the team play two point guards together in Fox and Harper in the starting line-up? It seems like a waste. I think it would be a situational thing, just like how playing Wemby and Kornet together would be.

I think the team will want Harper to develop by giving him the ball on continuous possessions just like last night. Having it alternate between him and another primary ballhandler like Fox would be a detriment, IMO.

At least when he’s with Castle, Castle’s goal will be to show off the variety of ways he can score.

It's not even about who starts, but what's their natural role.
Castle has point guard skills, but he's not a natural. At least not as of now, we'll see how he develops.

Fox and Harper are natural point guards and I think it's a guarantee their minutes will be staggered so that one of them is always on the floor.
And at that point, it doesn't even matter who starts.

Elite paint penetration on one and rim protection on the other side are two most important things in modern NBA, as we've seen during the playoffs.
Spurs have obvious flaws in some areas, but I think we'll have 48 minutes of elite play in those two areas. Not many teams have that luxury.

When you look at box scores it seems that 3pt shooting is the most important thing, but how many teams that can't get to the rim shoot above league average?
Get to the rim, draw fouls, collapse defenses and the shots you generate will be good enough to compensate for not having an elite shooting cast.

Damn it, I can't wait for the season to start already.

CB11 is so mature and poised for an 18YO. Classic spur. Can’t believe he fell to us at 14

I like what I've seen so far and I hope he gets minutes.

So far through two gams Ace Bailey looks like the real deal. I can see him giving Flagg a challenge for ROY. Don’t think Harper will get the massive PT of Flagg and Bailey to be in contention.

Yes, Bailey looks smooth as fuck. Almost Durant-like.

He reminded me of T-Mac

I did bring it up during that draft that the Spurs should try and trade up with the 14, Devin (and/or other player/s) and future first round pick or so, but hardly anyone was interested (I got shut down pretty fast). Then there was the rumours of Philadelphia wanting to trade away the third pick (not sure if that was a smokescreen as I thought they were going to take Bailey if they kept the pick), but word was that Bailey might fall out of the top 5 and really slide down to Brooklyn. I had a feeling/thought he'd be good. I guess we'll find out in time. Too many people got hung up on his combine measurements instead of looking at his offensive arsenal/package he had/has developed at such a young age already. And from what I read, he's a hard worker that does work on his game (offensively at least). I didn't think Dylan was hyping him up either when Dylan was saying some really nice things about him.

The excitement is growing, but I have to see this in real games where players are trying to win, and the 2nd half isnt played by guys who will either be in the Dleague or overseas this season.

Think we still start the year slowly but get better by mid-season.

You know, after getting Dylan back in this past pre-season game, and seeing all the guys that are still out in the early going, all I really want this season is for all the main guys on the team to stay healthy. I just want to see what the Spurs have, and for the Spurs to be able to properly evaluate the players on the team. I really hope all the main players can stay healthy and play all season so that we can see how the pieces fit. Wherever the Spurs finish (this will sort itself out if all the main cogs are healthy IMO), I'll be OK with it if they can have a great season health wise.

Yeah this site is such a Godsend. When the livestreams shit the bed, the replays are immaculate.

I remember people here saying bailey doesnt have a jumpshot.lol
People don’t realize how nasty the situation was at Rutgers. It was Harper Bailey and a lot of trash. Not even upperclassmen who look good just by virtue of being older and stronger. Just an awful squad they were carrying

Not the hottest take but the league is stacked. Even Utah…the ONLY verified dud in the west - it still has Markkannen and Bailey along with one of league’s absolute dead eyes in sensebaugh. Filipowski also an interesting player along with Kessler and a few solid vets. I’m not looking up how to spell those names btw. But I doubt they’ll be an easy out until ainge shuts everyone down to get his AJ odds up.

And New Orleans, the other alleged dud, is a legit squad if they’re healthy. Charlotte still a mess but certainly better than last season. Same with Washington. And I’m not cold on Brooklyn either. They have some things happening. The top of the east obviously thinned out but there are very very few gimmes at this point.

It’s a challenge for the spurs but a great time for basketball and maybe an indicator that the CBA is actually working by forcing GMs into more careful decisions.

i dont think NO is a legit squad. they are a pretty awful defensive squad right now. Herb is their only actually good defender. Murphy is ok. the rest? Zion, Missi, Poole? bad. and thats two bad defenders at the rim protection spots. then they drafted Fears and Queen who are poor defenders.

and for a bad defensive team, they are also not a very good shooting team. Murphy and Poole are going to provide virtually all of their shooting. i think their margin for error is extremely low this year.

Utah does have some fun pieces, but i dont know if they will coalesce this year into winning. i adore Lauri. Kessler is fine, but i think Utah is overvaluing him. I like Collier, Sensabaugh, Bailey, and Flip. but i think overall their guard play is still just too weak, and Kessler is their only plus defender right now, with Hendricks theoretically there too. they gave up Clarkson and John Collins for nothing

The only player that really matters to Utah is Bailey. He is one of Ainge’s new wing tandem (Tatum/Brown). Not sure if he’s a #1 or a #2 but he’s one of em. Next year if they can add a Dybantsa then they will be set. The team can be built around those two. I wouldn’t expect anyone else to hang around just depends on what they need.

CB11 is still over-thinking and deferring too much. He's obviously young and finding his way. One observation is that he can be bricking all night and when the game is on the line he just shoots with no hesitation and has made some ballsy clutch shots. That tells me he will get comfortable and eventually just let it fly. Defensively, I love what I see. His head is on a swivel, his weak-side angles are perfect, when he gets beat he recovers as fast as anyone I've ever seen. Offensively, I see his decision-making and passing as on point. He blends in well. His Bball IQ is high.

Harper is one cool-ass MFer. No wasted motion. He's already a highly serviceable pro. He's definitely a Cade-like player. He will thrive in the ball-movement schemes that we are seeing early on. He should be able to play with anyone. Already throwing great lobs. Psyched to see more out of him.

Wemby's passing has taken an upturn. The Beautiful game might be back. His creativity and unusual angles are wild to see. That behind the back pass that Keldon bobbled was elite.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Castle, Fox and Sochan integrate into the lineups.

I'm loving how the new players are really blending together well. It looks like there is some cohesion between the FO and the coaches in the personnel choices. That's a relief!

So far, it looks like this draft class is very strong. Bailey looks like a bucket. The ROY race will be fun to watch.
solid post game write ups

Nothing’s set until a hyped prospect meets their expectations. As hyped as Dybantsa may be, he has to prove he’s a guy they can build around. I doubt Bailey is that guy.

I like that Ace Bailey kept it simple and didn’t try to do too much self creation and one on one. He would just catch, rise and shoot. That can be a very dangerous player if the shooting is real which it looks to be.

Yeah I agree. I’m just speaking in generality when I said “a dybantsa” (although I do obviously think he might be a star it’s too early to be sure). They just need to hit on that second guy like Ainge did with both Tatum and Brown and they are golden.

I think a good playoff team shd model on Pacers.. total team offense and total team defense.

I think this is the Spurs model, similar to OKC, too. Constant ball pressure and rim protection on D and a variety of offensive looks. I think we'll see a lot of players on the floor to start the season. Here's the 15 I see on the big team and this is not leaving an open roster spot as is typical for the Spurs. Bryant will get some G-league burn, I'd imagine.
5 guard rotation with Fox, Vassell, Castle, Harper and Waters. McLaughlin is our insurance policy and will rack up some DNPs.
Wings: Champagnie, Barnes, Keldon, Sochan, Bryant
Bigs: Wemby, Kornet, Olynyk, Biyombo
