Game Thread Spurs vs Jazz (Fri 10/10/25) [7:00PM CDT]

Yes most stacked and talented on paper....only to be eaten alive on the boards by Steven Adams and Enes Kanters
…when Tim’s second wheel fell off. Teams seasons shouldn’t be down graded by a player injury that let directly to his retirement.

I agree 100%. Tim was played very well (I'd even say he was played great) that season until he hurt his good knee (I think it was the good knee like you mentioned) in the second half of the season.

I believe if Tim didn't have that injury, I think they win 70+ games like the Warriors did too. I think TD missed around 15+, maybe 20+ games that season and they still won 67 games. If TD was closer to 100% in the OKC series, I would have given the Spurs a much better chance. I also didn't like the officiating in that series at all, but that was the case against OKC back then anytime the Spurs played them in the playoffs.

IMO, that was a strange season as the two best teams (Warriors and Spurs) didn't win it. OKC shouldn't have been there in the first place playing the Warriors in the WCF. They didn't earn the Spurs series win and subsequently choked against GSW. That 2016 Spurs team was awesome and I would have loved to have seen what they could have done if they stayed together. If TD could have played another season or two (if he didn't hurt his good knee), I think that team was capable of 70+ wins.

To me, it’s all about catering to individual strengths.

Between Castle and Harper, who is the better off ball player? It’s Castle. Who is the better point guard? It’s likely Harper, since from everything I’ve seen, Castle is focused on trying to be a 3-level scorer.

So why would the team play two point guards together in Fox and Harper in the starting line-up? It seems like a waste. I think it would be a situational thing, just like how playing Wemby and Kornet together would be.

I think the team will want Harper to develop by giving him the ball on continuous possessions just like last night. Having it alternate between him and another primary ballhandler like Fox would be a detriment, IMO.

At least when he’s with Castle, Castle’s goal will be to show off the variety of ways he can score.
As always it’s not about starting but who finishes, I just see Harper with higher ceiling and i think he will be soon the better player already. Don’t get me wrong I like a lot castle but Harper seems to be another animal imo

Castle's ceiling is probably a Jrue/Jimmy type.
Harper's ceiling is JKidd with 70-80% of Harden's offensive output.

The thing is that 5 years down the line they could form a perfect backcourt and I don't see why would we have to choose between them.
It won't be another Tony/Manu scenario within Spurs fandom, I think there's way less overlap between Harper's and Castle's skillset unless Castle takes an unexpected leap and becomes an elite playmaker.
But I'm one of those people that believe elite playmakers are born and it's not something that can be taught.

Regarding Harper and Castle, I look forward to see them on the floor together, as Harper will mainly be coming in for Fox. Castle will sit as well so their time together might be limited. Having Fox and/or Harper on the floor at all times will be strong.

Sure but there’s also the 230 million dollar man

Which is great because he'll be our best guard for at least two, probably three more seasons.

Celtics made it work with Jrue/Derrick/Brown, I think Fox/Harper/Castle can be better offensively, we'll see if they manage defensively. Obviously nowhere near Celtics trio level.

If, or should I say when, Harper becomes better than Fox, we'll trade Fox if the fit isn't good enough.

the concern is that we can’t get off his contract because there aren’t many teams who want to install the Fox offense into what they already have…and he’s overpaid.

Not to say Fox isn’t great. He is. But hes going to be hard to unload. Which is why we were able to get him on the cheap in the first place.

I think they won’t trade Fox until they have to, like if both young guards pop, and it looks like Fox might want another deal. At that point, they will have won a ‘chip, or Fox isn’t the difference maker they thought, and you work with Klutch to find a soft landing for him, something the Spurs are known for.

Probably, but it may be too late by then. If by next offseason it becomes clear Harper and Castle are everything we hope they can be, they should start moving to find Fox a new home (with his consent).

Way late for this, but two big takeaways from the Utah game on two of the forum's punching bags (and mine too)

1) I liked what Devin was doing in this game, and will look even better when Fox and Castle are back. He may very well fit nicely into the role we need him too... unfortunately he has a contract that is too large for that role. Oh well.

2) Keldon in the pre-season has been quite good offensively. Would do very well as our energy bench scorer. If he can consistently do this in that role, I would be happy to ride out his contract.

Way too early to move Fox next off-season IMO. You don't do that to him after he helped the Spurs get him. Why are people so quick to want to get rid of Fox?

Why? There’s no salary pressure until 2029, when Harper’s hypothetical extension kicks in. Keep the talent together until you can’t. That would be 2029 at the latest.

I think (and i hope im right) the spurs are looking at last years pacers team and this is why they will keep all 3 of castle/fox/harp...

i think mitch johnson is looking ahead to being the kind of team and playing the type of bb the pacers did - where instead of 3 superstars and role players -
it will be 10-11-12 deep with a full 48 minute barrage of effort and fresh players playing balls out and sharing the playing time...

so this "trade fox/keep harper/" is premature IMO...

I think maybe people haven't seen enough of him yet to really value what he brings. I'd expect that kind of talk to quiet down after we see his impact on a healthy team with Wemby fully available.

Unless there’s a Giannis deal, none of Fox, Castle, or Harper are getting moved this year. The urgency to move one comes when:

1) they are on the cusp of contention and one of them is just not working out and they want to flip for that contending piece

2) when castles extension is due to kick in

Until then… they will ride the situation out. Give time to get a much better assessment of the young guys’ realistic trajectories. Now if by year 3 Castle is still shooting at or under ~32% you can have those discussions.

All the snap reactions after we saw 5 games of wemby + fox and 20 minutes of Harper against the Jazz in preseason are kinda pointless

Hi guys, just got here I dont know how. Huge Spurs fan from Brazil. I agree with this take, for now we have a good problem tô deal with 3 top guards, too much concern with the timelines but missing the good side of having Fox coaching the young talents.
