Trade Spurs Trade Ideas

It's also Nov 13. Trade season doesn't really even begin for another month. I bet this FO would definitely like to see several months of what this team can do before making any changes, especially since we've yet to see what the 3-headed guard monster looks like, and we won't get to see that for probably another month.

I think you’re unwilling to state your core argument that you think Sochan and Vassell are intelligent players. The crux of the argument isn’t that many words. Porter is a smarter player than both of those guys. You’re free to disagree. Your methods are strange. And I’m not too worried about whatever reputation I have. I think I’m contributing to the discourse with sincere opinions without targeting people. Seems like I’m doing my job on a casual fan message board.
Nobody ever said Vassell or sochan are intelligent players like a Diaw or a kyle Anderson , they are like any other role players, 4th to 9th man types. They get some right, they got some wrong.

To say MPJ, one of the least intelligent 3rd option on a good team, and now 1st option on an awful team, is not dumb is quite a stance.

You said you don’t see mpj throw the ball away like an idiot, and numbers show that he threw the ball away worse than any of the dumb players we have. His PPP is worse in most categories if it wasn’t for him being a better finisher. He is known to be a black hole who doesn’t know how to pass and that’s pretty well documented.

The onus is on you to show he has at least average bbiq, which is your criteria for a player to be on the spurs. You haven’t, and I’ve already done most of the heavy lifting to show the opposite.

Of course, you have never been able to show any ability to come up with concrete examples of low iq plays, it’s always spoken in generalities because you are too lazy to even steal those instagram clips you’ve been basing your bball knowledge on.

I don't think anybody is expecting drastic moves. We're talking about small moves around the edges that helps our main guys develop.
I agree with this, the biggest determinants of success for this season and next are continued development of Harper/Castle/Wemby and Fox buying in and playing up to his contract.

That being said, guys are playing fewer minutes because they're having to move a lot more while they're on the court, so depth becomes way more important. Spurs should be looking at undervalued guys on smaller contracts, maybe 2nd rounders/undrafted guys who showed promise in limited time but experienced the roster crunch. They're probably playing themselves out of bargain deals, but I'd keep an eye on guys like Paul Reed or Josh Minott, who would probably bring more value as backups compared to Biyombo and Sochan. Jalen Smith is probably unavailable at this point for something reasonable. Tristan Vukcevic looked promising last year and has regressed badly this year but might be a buy low target / reclamation project.

Paul Reed's turning into a super sub with Detroit, only playing about 12 mpg but having ridiculous impact. He might be another Luke Kornet, a legit late bloomer.

Jonathan Isaac had the same kind of impact on limited minutes in 2024, but then regressed last year when Orlando had him bulk up and play more center. He's still a guy I keep an eye on, because I think in the right situation his defense could really help a team.

With vassell’s surprising improvement maybe fox is the one we need to offload in 2 years

My concern is that whomever you bring in is going to be a 4th or 5th option, and the casual take will be their regressed, and we won't be able to get our investment back in a few years not because the player has taken a step back but because of role.

We have enough star power, I just want solid role players now.
We need to be blessed with another Bruce Bowen. 😀

What improvement are you talking about.Other then maybe stepped up his d a lil.Vassell is still not that
good of a player.

Bball Paul. He was an analytics darling during his draft cycle, and Philly fans loved him.

Carter Bryant could eventually fit the fold tbh. The issue is he needs time.
I still haven't given up on Jeremy but the window is shrinking.

They didn’t love him his last year when he got more playing time. Bball Paul is a headcase when he has too much to do. Would love him as our 3rd C though.

Jonathan Isaac makes Anthony Davis look like an iron man. Legit the most injury prone player in the NBA

Only player I could see potentially being moved before the deadline would be Sochan. That's it. They're not trading Vassell or anyone else tbh. This is an evaluation year for us. They know we're not in contention

You forgot to mention the fact that he's legitimately one of the worst defenders in the NBA (125.5 defensive rating this season is disgusting 🤮) and is owed nearly $40M/per the next 2 years... Hard fucking pass tbh.
I’m not an MPJ fan, but in reality, he’s on a tanking team. Every previous season except one, his net rating was positive.

Yeah, nobody is going to claim he was ever a good defender, but often times advanced stats without context lead to flawed conclusions, especially on tanking teams.

That's definitely a legit issue. That and his politics. But I do love watching him play defense.

How do his social opinions factor into him being on this team? I don’t understand the issue unless you think NBA players are super online and progressive. Which they aren’t. It’s just your own lack of mental flexibility that’s being challenged. I think he’s a wacko but I also don’t see how that matters.

Lots of folks talking about MPJ in the hypothetical and not talking about how he is the actual textbook need if we were to emulate the last team to win with a playmaking center. Like…it’s not really a question if he can be a wing on a title team. He was. It happened. And he expires after next year. The concerns about pay aren’t material. Fit is good. The question is if you think Devin could get a cheaper asset that we can keep longer. That’s a valid question.

Today's preference: I want to find out which tier 2 and 3 rotational players can elevate their games in the playoffs, and then focus on retaining those guys first. So I'm firmly in camp wait and see, unless sa deal too good to pass up presents itself.

In a small small move, I can see the spurs releasing Biyombo. I liked what he did last year and he is a high character guy, but he looks like he's done and high character doesn't win you a close game.. Yes, I know he's the 15th guy, but if Wemby rests and Kornet is injured, all we have is maybe Olynick and Biyombo and that isn't saying much.

The spurs have a few weak spots, but by far the worst is backup center. If Kornet or Wemby are injured or resting (hopefully not both), we're in trouble. So a move for a new minimum contract player could help even at the 15th position.

Saw a nice Biyombo + 2 seconds to IND for Jay Huff. I like that move. If French Vanilla is going to be a thing, we'll need additional real C depth. Bismack ain't it and neither is Kelly O.

These guys aren't going to play every game either.

It won't happen mid-season, but Spurs need to rip the bandaid off and get rid of the friendship crew.
They'll always be the same negative IQ players.
The issue is that I'm not sure who can we scam into taking them.
Kings changed their GM, that door is closed.

Meanwhile, Markkanen is averaging 29 on 49/39/88 and some people thought offering friendship crew and Hawks picks that will be late lottery was too much.
