What are your thoughts on the season so far, and what do you think will happen in this second half?

They’re better than I initially thought heading into the season. Had them pegged as a top 6 team at best with a lot of struggling to fit the 3 guard lineup in. They’re way ahead of schedule. It helps that our superstar and all 3 guards are not too egotistical as to always want to be the HOTS all the time.

Fully expect to lose a couple more in our final difficult stretch of the season, then cruise through wins at over a 70% clip after the deadline, which should put them top 3 or 4 in the West. The team would have a lot of confidence entering the playoffs. They’d probably win the first round in 6, then lose in the second to the Nuggets or Thunder.

Things to look out for:
1. Castle learning to counter opposing teams packing the paint and limiting his turnovers
2. Fox realizing he’s the second best player on the team and taking control more often
3. Harper running through his rookie wall
4. Wemby limiting the dribble dribble isos against a triple team that always ends with an impossible shot or a bad steal
5. Barnes either waking the fuck up or getting traded
6. A trade for a veteran eventual-Barnes-replacement
7. Mitch johnson learning to call a play out of a timeout other than “bad turnover”
8. Keldon being a finalist for 6MOY
9. Wemby winning the DPOY
10. Carter Bryant shaving his head

memes aside its been a resounding success. we appear to be ahead of schedule. title contenders this year? probably not. but thats going to be the expectation next season for sure.

from our starters alone, wemby has missed 14 games while castle, vassell, and fox have missed 9 apiece. off the bench, harper missed 10. kornet missed 8. and wemby has had pretty strict minute restrictions in games where he has played, not having logged 30 minutes in a game since mid-november.

so its not like we've had phenomenal injury luck. per craftedNBA, we have had the 2nd hardest schedule in the league to date. and despite all that, we are sitting pretty at 28-13, on pace for 56 wins in a season where our preseason o/u was 44.5 wins.

most people agreed that the goal of this season was to make the playoffs. not the play-in, but making the playoffs outright. we are well on pace to do so.

I predicted 46-36 and we're on pace for 56 wins so regardless of some obvious team issues I cannot see their performance as anything but a huge success thus far

I'm just so happy to be watching competitive Spurs ball even against the top tiers.

It's beautiful, it's nostalgic and it's fresh with these new stars and our tank commanders changing roles along the way with a new coaching staff.
I give credit to @scott @Guru of Nothing and @ffaddicted- I mean @Rafa for bringing the mojo this year and I look forward to looking forward to more games as we go.

At the start of the season, I predicted the Spurs around 40-45 wins and somewhere in the play-in mix. So far, they are far exceeding those expectations.

Obviously being 2nd in the West at this point is amazing, but there is still a lot of season to go. My hopes are to at least finish in the top 4 for some home court advantage. Barring a serious collapse, making the playoffs is almost a foregone conclusion.

What impresses me most is the team impact on their success. To be honest, Wemby hasn't taken the huge superstar leap that I was hoping for...still a menace on defense, but his offense has been iffy and of course, the injuries. Despite that, we have maintained this success while we've had so many guys in and out of the rotation, and leaning so heavily on younger players like Castle, Harper, and Johnson bodes well for the future.

I'm also encouraged that we are staying afloat with a lot of guys honestly playing below capability. I already mentioned Vic, but all of our guards have struggled recently so if they can get it back on track, watch out.

Would be a 5 if Wemby could stay healthy.
I hate living in constant fear whenever he's on the floor.

Solid 4
Only because as any young team they have had a few frustrating losses and injuries have limited things. A bit of greed

That said, if you'd told me in September the Spurs would be on pace for mid 50s wins and what would I would preemptively give a 5

We’ve blown some games that, with average shooting, we would have blown them out instead. I see those games as positives. This season is a wild success and getting reliable shooting out of the guards makes me believe they can contend now.

When we shoot well, we’re maybe the toughest out in the league.

So, pretty solid.

On the team...

- 2nd seed is really unexpected...especially experiencing the absurdly long shooting slump since Xmas. But despite the shooting slump, there were many close games which we still could have won if not for some stupid coaching decisions by Mitch.

- As long as the 3s are falling, this team has shown that they can play with anybody, including defending champion OKC.

- I can't wait to see how the team perform in a playoffs series. Man....it has been 7 years since we are in the damn playoffs! I know we will definitely feel disappointed when the Spurs eventually lose in the playoffs...but it will be a great success if we can reached the 2nd round and gave the opponents a hell of a fight. I am guessing it would be either OKC or Denver that would knock us out if we are unfortunately enough to draw them in the 2nd round.

- It is a long long shot, but I hope we can secure the 2nd or 3rd seed and the LAC can continue their surge so that we might have a shot to play them in the 1st round. LAC absolutely cannot give a top 5 pick to OKC...Nephew is 35 years old this year and it is unsure how many chances left that we can play against him in a playoff series, especially with Nephew's everlasting injuries issue and his Salary Cap Circumvention scandal. I sincerely wish that we can have at least 1 playoff series against Nephew. The crowd would be insane I suppose and Pop will not be there to say "that's not we are" :st-lol: . Dear Basketball Gods...please make this happens and also please make them all stay healthy, including LAC....

On some of the players...

KJ's emergence was really unexpected.

Best 3P % on team, efficient finishing at the rim, crashing offensive boards, hitting timely 3s. He was regressing ever since Wemby joined the team.

Went from team leading scorer at 22 pts per game and lesser min as a starter and eventually on the bench. He kinda slimed down at the start of last season but his basketball skills and stats did not improve. He was heading toward being a trade target.

This year KJ bulked up his big body again and is playing at 6MOY level. This is emergence is really rare for a 7th year player and especially on the same team. Usually, a player's improvement/emergence arises from being traded to a new team and environment.

Sochan's regression was also really unexpected.

Last season, Sochan was having somewhat of a career year averaging around 12 pts, 6 rebs with efficient shooting around the rim. His offensive outputs were noticeable...some PnR with CP3, scoring off putback, catching lobs from Wemby.

Basically, he was one step closer to being a Aaron Gordon (without the 3 pointer yet). In the off season, he posted his training videos working on mid-range jumpers and 3 pointers. His forms look good and the shot release timing has improved. Then he got injured and missed the Eurobasket tournament and the pre-season.

He returned after missing 7 or 8 games after the season started and is averaging career worst in every stats and mins. Did not get an extension offer in the off season and is now pushed to the end of the bench. Sochan got trolled by Mitch into dying his hair pink after the Lakers game as he thought he might finally be back in the rotation and given mins ahead of CB after he somewhat managed to contribute more positively, compared to CB's trash performance. But in the recent games, Sochan is playing behind CB again and only in the trash mins.

This is Sochan's contract year and we will see if he get traded by the deadline. Very likely this is his last season on the team.

Korndog's impact

Korndog might be the most important player behind Wemby in a sense. Example, if Fox or Castle or Harper (not concurrently) went down, there are other guards to fill in for him. Same thing at the Forward positions. Korndog is the only rim protector that we have other than Wemby and his presence is especially important given that Wemby has been quite unlucky dealing with so many falls, banged knee, minor knee hyperextension one after another which I believe he might be on mins restriction for a quite a while. I recalled the game with Wemby and Korndog out against the Cavs and they dropped like 80+ paint points on us. The Spurs really need to address a 3rd center who is a decent rim protector in the off season.

harper aint winning ROTY
42+ wins is a successful season so 5/5 so far

Yea...Harper has no chance for ROTY right from the start once he is drafted by us where he is given limited mins and coming off the bench.

Flagg and Kon are really impressive as rookie. Edgecombe and Queen are showing flashes of future all-star potential.

Nevertheless, I still expect Harper to be the 2nd best player after Flagg by the next 3 or 4 years.

Excellent.

I thought they could push 50 wins if Wembanyama stayed healthy. He hasn't and they're currently past a 50 win pace.

Even if they don't keep that up, they've been excellent even without him. Statistically, they are something like fourth or fifth in least point margin in their losses, meaning even when they lose they're keeping it close. Even good teams can't win every game, and the ones they're losing they're rarely out of it.

This is with a roster that's not completely constructed and players who have had bad patches. Like, I don't think Harper has been that great, at least for his draft position, but he's learning a specific role and will grow from there.

What are your thoughts on the season so far, and what do you think will happen in this second half?
Everybody knows the factoid thrown around about the male frontal lobe. Its become a Trope.
Cliche.
"Men's frontal lobes, particularly the prefrontal cortex (PFC) responsible for judgment, planning, and impulse control, typically finish developing in the mid-to-late twenties, often cited as around age 25, but potentially extending to 30, though development varies individually and can continue subtly into adulthood, influenced by genetics, environment, and experiences"
From my perspective, and as a Man at my age, even guys like Jones Garcia at 24 still seem like babies.

That being said, Mitch has no excuses. I have the same thought about some of you commenters who choose to make pithy responses to my post about the team.

With so much talent on this team with Wemby, Castle, Fox, Harper, Johnson, and Kornet it feels like even a coach as seemingly incompetent as Mitch could make it to the Finals Eventually. The current record isn’t surprising. Yet there are still commentators, wannabe bloggers, and podcasters who don’t believe in Wemby despite everything he’s shown. Expecting them to appreciate how rare it is to have players like Harper and Castle on rookie deals alongside Fox is probably a futile exercise.

I had the Spurs win about 41 games and be a play-in team, so they have exceeded my expectations despite the injuries. Despite being the second seed right now, I remain pessimistic at getting out of the first round. We obviously cant beat the Timberwolves, Suns or Warriors. We won against Houston, but more games will show how the matchup works with them.

Wemby is not built yet to play in the paint and be an undeniable offensive player. Especially after the Milwaukee game I like him excel as a defender and 3 point shooter while only occasionally attack against a set half-court defense. this 65 game rule to win awards has to be abolished otherwise Wemby might never win one as the Spurs are just super cautious with him. Mitch might not play him above 30 minutes ever in the regular season.

Mitch likes to play Fox more off the ball which was fine when he was hitting threes at a 40% clip. I dont think thats the case anymore, so I like him to attack more. I will never be impatient with him against OKC - that is just not his matchup.

I admit I am a Castle hater, but at least the last few games show improvements again. His shot is totally broken so I remain open to trade him against a 3&D wing.

Harper was a revelation but his impact has regressed. He already is one of the top slashers in the league, but he cant finish efficiently at the rim. His shot is not broken like Castle's, so I have hope there. Love the guy so hope he gets back on track being more consistent.

Keldon is finally back being a 40% three point shooter which is what I always wanted. 6th man candidate. Whats not to like.

Current offensive woes show how important Vassell is. Hopefully he returns soon.

Did Carter Bryant miss another dunk against Milwaukee? Remains comical but I stay optimistic and like that he gets minutes.

Harrison Barnes has regressed so much that even Sean Elliott cannot do the 100% shtick all the time. Give Olynyk some of his minutes if he has an off-night.

Champagnie is awesome. he has cold streaks, but then he rebounds like crazy and him attacking closeouts is not a total trainwreck. Pop champagne!

Kornet? Solid. Just solid.

We are a top 10 team in the league which is a fantastic improvement over the past few years. It's very possible we can make the Western conference finals. Shooting issues need to be addressed next year if we want to take the next step but overall it's been a successful season. I gave it a 4

What kind of logic is this?
When we win, more data is needed, but when we lose, that's it, we can't beat those teams?
We lost two games in Minnesota, one without Wemby and the other one by 1 point while on a b2b and Wemby on minutes restriction.
In both Warriors games Curry went nuclear and those were Fox's first games of the season.
First Suns loss was probably the worst game of the season, Fox didn't play.
In the second loss neither Castle nor Wemby played.

It's a young team that's finding themselves and improving on day to day basis.
Same can't be said about the Timberwolves or the Warriors. Even the Rockets that are in all kinds of trouble if they don't find a point guard at the deadline.

Yeah sorry for looking at wins and losses with 2+ games being played. You look at every specific specialty in every game we lost ... please also do this for the opposing team in every game we won. Propbably our record would not be that good either with all the injuries of other teams.
All the excuses for losing those games can be thrown out the window if the current Spurs are the actual Spurs from a 3 point shooting perspective.

The difference is that I'm not saying we'll surely beat a team in the playoffs because we beat them in the regular season.
Games that happen early in the season have nothing in common with playoff matchup between those same teams most of the time.

GSW and Minnesota both have deep playoff experience. We're pushing veteran teams who have been there before.

Also, can't imagine not being a Stephon Castle fan. That's wild. Dude is already a net positive in advanced stats in his second year and is next to Wembanyama in how good our defense is becoming. Plus he's going to become a triple double threat before long.

We could make the WCF or lose in the 1st round if the 3 ball isn't falling. I'd consider just making the playoffs a success tbh. Our core is still young as hell and should only get better with time.

If regular season matchups were so predictive, the Spurs should tank for the 8 seed so they can knock out the Thunder in round 1.

We'll eventually get over the hump with these teams, it just takes some time. I expect us to handle GSW easily the next two matchups we have with them this season. PHX and MIN are tbd... there are some mitigating factors that explain the losses against them, but at the same time they are very difficult matchups for us and they've had a good gameplan.

On the flip side, OKC is likely to adapt to the "hump" we present them. It's not a rivalry if one team wins all the time. This team has shown a certain resilience and ability to quickly learn and grow. I'm looking forward to seeing how this second half of the season and playoffs play out. I do hope our FO is willing to make some minor moves around the margins though.

I don't think we necessarily need a PF in the traditional sense, but another Barnes-like character (Hauser, for example) could be quite useful to mitigate Barnes' streakiness.
