Game Thread Spurs (59-18) @ Nuggets (49-28) (Sat 4/4/2026) [2:00PM CDT]

You know, 1999 Spurs and this team is kind of an interesting conversation. Who’s deeper and more talented? Different eras obviously. Both dominant teams. I hope it’s the same result at the end of the season.
This team is more talented, younger, atheltic and deeper than 99 team.

Not that SRS is the end-all be-all of ranking teams, but just for fun here are the top 10 Spurs teams of all-time by SRS:

2015-2016 Spurs: 67-15, +10.28 SRS
2025-2026 Spurs: 59-18 (62-63 win pace), +8.39 SRS
2006-2007 Spurs: 58-24, +8.35 SRS
2013-2014 Spurs: 62-20, +8.00 SRS
2000-2001 Spurs: 58-24, +7.92 SRS
2004-2005 Spurs: 59-23, +7.84 SRS
2003-2004 Spurs: 57-25, +7.51 SRS
2011-2012 Spurs: 50-16 (62 win pace in shortened season), +7.28 SRS
2016-2017 Spurs: 61-21, +7.13 SRS
1998-1999 Spurs: 37-13 (60-61 win pace in shortened season), +7.12 SRS

Not a bad group of teams to be lumped in (and almost at the top!) with. Four title teams, plus a few infamous heartbreak seasons where I'm sure most of us felt we were good enough to win it all (2016, 2004).

Cool
I suspect the SRS undervalues teams like the 99 team and 03 team as they started off so slowly
The 99 team was 6-8 at one point. Then went on an incredible tear. 31-5 to end the season (12-1 finishing then 15-2 playoffs).
Probably the best Spurs team compared to the league. Of course it wasn't built for the long haul.

I like how the promo poster has Wemby as the lowest guy.
He looks like a predator.

The 1978-79 spurs team was up 3-1 in the eastern conf finals and headed to the nba finals before the nba decided that a recent aba team had zero business in the superior nba finals… *it still hurts*

Game 7 had the spurs leading and heading to the finals…before a half dozen OFFENSIVE FOULS in a row….
(It was as bad as the lakers shooting an astronomical amount of 4th qtr free throws against the sac kings in 2002? 2003?)

Gervin was as good for the spurs as wemby is for the spurs today…imo

Applause to Spurs med team for handling of Wemby including last nights rest.
Was stated all along that Wembys own med people would get input.
I like it.

Chip >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>often phony sports media award. Let the FT Princess have it.

Gervin only played offense. He was damn good at it, though.

That team also got the organization over the hump. Huge thing to win the first title, no matter Phil's "asterisk" comment.

Although Mario Elie, Steve Kerr, Will Perdue, and Jerome Kersey weren't the youngest or most athletic, they brought a playoff toughness and veteran presence the Spurs had been missing.

Wemby > post-prime DRob
Champ <<< Timmy
Vassell = Elliot
Castle > Ellie
Fox >>> Avery

Harper, Keldon, Kornet >> Kerr, Purdue, Malik

2026 Spurs way talented >>> 1999 Spurs
2026 Spurs << 2003 Spurs talent and experience
But Future current Spurs >>> All-Time Spurs. Future current is loaded and still very young. 2-3 years from now they will be ++++ better. It’s scary how much better they will be in a few years

Good analysis. It’s tough to compare a different time in the league. But this team is definitely majorly talented.

That team was a doug moe team and averaged 119 pts per game for the season…

No one played defense…and when the spurs played the nuggets…it was going to be a run and gun shootout…lol
