The Spurs won't touch Dillon Brooks with a barge pole. Such players dont' fit the Spurs culture.
The way this team has played so far suggests that they have all graduated from an intensive Defensive course work in the offseason set by Sweeney and Johnson. The Spurs will favour corporate knowledge over getting anyone from outside unless that person from other teams offers a significant upgrade from what the current team folks do.
So, its going to be an acid test for Sochan in particular. That's because the current players who have played in all five games have really proven that they have made a good leap despite their deficiencies and have adapted well to a Wemby-led team. Players like Vassell, Keldon (who for me is the biggest surprise with his high 3 pt % and finishing at the rim.. fingers crossed that this pattern should stay) and Champs have proven to be vital role players. Only Barnes among the current lot seems vulnerable in case the Spurs are really going to upgrade in February. The good thing is that both Sochan and Barnes are expiring and are good trade chips should that eventuality arise (I think there is a 10-15% chance).
The reason why I am giving such a low chance is for two things -
1) I expect Sochan to make the leap just like Vassell and Keldon did. He was already a good to great defensive player last season with a mediocre shooting stroke at low frequency. If he improves his shooting to average at average frequency and continues his good defense.. he will be as valuable a role player as Keldon or Champs.
2) Barnes, I think, is a clear cut case for a trade chip. But he has shown that he can rise to the occasion and contribute as a decent PF who can operate from the mid post or shoot from the corners. Plus offer some defensive resistance to big PFs/ SFs. Unless someone like Lauri Markkanen (sureshot) or Michael Porter Jr (decent) is available, I dont think the Spurs will pull the trigger.
The Fox conundrum will be the interesting one. We have had a poor sample size of games with both Fox and Wemby playing together and thriving. If Fox comes back from his hamstring injury and strings together a stretch of games in the manner he did as an All Star not long ago.. the Spurs guard rotation will be set and there will be a lot of options. If not, the Spurs will have another dilemma in February. I rate the chances of the former to be much more. A Fox with a finger injury was a decent player last year in limited games. A fully fit Fox will be a great addition, I think. It will help Castle become a secondary playmaker while wreaking havoc on defense, still help with minutes for Harper who has shown he can also play off-ball, while cutting down minutes for McLaughlin, Barnes and Keldon to manageable levels.
