Game Thread Spurs (5-0) @ Suns (2-4) (Sun 11/02/25) [7:00PM CDT]

Saw rumblings that LeBron and Luka won't miss the national broadcast Tuesday night. Wouldn't mind seeing Swipa and Kornet ease back into the rotation.

Meanwhile, would be interesting if Maestro and the Mariachis continue their brief trial of HB at center and even try CB in the role. That's what Pop used the first quarter of the season for, exploring fits and possibilities

Huge relief, tbh.
Dillon Brooks is the only player I'm scared of because he'd surely try to injure Wemby.
I wonder how Dillon would fit on the Spurs? I'd rather have him on the team so he can't do anything against us ;). I'm guessing his salary is somewhat high, though.

He'd be a perfect fit.
Mobile, 6'6, but plays bigger on defense.
Shot 38% 3pt on 6 attempts in 2 seasons with the Rockets.

He will be a good protector role. His 3p% are more consistent after his Memphis day. He can take Champ's role

The Spurs won't touch Dillon Brooks with a barge pole. Such players dont' fit the Spurs culture.

The way this team has played so far suggests that they have all graduated from an intensive Defensive course work in the offseason set by Sweeney and Johnson. The Spurs will favour corporate knowledge over getting anyone from outside unless that person from other teams offers a significant upgrade from what the current team folks do.

So, its going to be an acid test for Sochan in particular. That's because the current players who have played in all five games have really proven that they have made a good leap despite their deficiencies and have adapted well to a Wemby-led team. Players like Vassell, Keldon (who for me is the biggest surprise with his high 3 pt % and finishing at the rim.. fingers crossed that this pattern should stay) and Champs have proven to be vital role players. Only Barnes among the current lot seems vulnerable in case the Spurs are really going to upgrade in February. The good thing is that both Sochan and Barnes are expiring and are good trade chips should that eventuality arise (I think there is a 10-15% chance).

The reason why I am giving such a low chance is for two things -

1) I expect Sochan to make the leap just like Vassell and Keldon did. He was already a good to great defensive player last season with a mediocre shooting stroke at low frequency. If he improves his shooting to average at average frequency and continues his good defense.. he will be as valuable a role player as Keldon or Champs.
2) Barnes, I think, is a clear cut case for a trade chip. But he has shown that he can rise to the occasion and contribute as a decent PF who can operate from the mid post or shoot from the corners. Plus offer some defensive resistance to big PFs/ SFs. Unless someone like Lauri Markkanen (sureshot) or Michael Porter Jr (decent) is available, I dont think the Spurs will pull the trigger.

The Fox conundrum will be the interesting one. We have had a poor sample size of games with both Fox and Wemby playing together and thriving. If Fox comes back from his hamstring injury and strings together a stretch of games in the manner he did as an All Star not long ago.. the Spurs guard rotation will be set and there will be a lot of options. If not, the Spurs will have another dilemma in February. I rate the chances of the former to be much more. A Fox with a finger injury was a decent player last year in limited games. A fully fit Fox will be a great addition, I think. It will help Castle become a secondary playmaker while wreaking havoc on defense, still help with minutes for Harper who has shown he can also play off-ball, while cutting down minutes for McLaughlin, Barnes and Keldon to manageable levels.

Unc introduced VW and Julian to the CLA training method over the summer, per Jared Weiss's reporting. Among other things, it seems to have helped with increasing their court awareness and, especially for the Alien, lowering his turnovers. Doubt the Spurs move on from that veteran leadership easily, especially if they're still having success later in the season. The hard thing may be changing his role, at least until his streak ends.

I think this idiot is who yall should be afraid of when it comes to potentially injuring Wemby

Damn I didn't realize how many dirty plays this guy has already made. The undercut on Green looked like he tripped though, but fuck Donkey tbh if anyone deserves to get injured on a dirty play its Raymond

Edit: It was Butler not Green :st-lol: still fuck Donkey though

I was looking at the standings and noticed that the Spurs are the only team allowing below 110 points a game. Wtf is going on in the NBA 😅

Makes a little more sense? Not really when the margin of error is easier to work with in a exhibition game like this one unlike the Laker game. I don't agree with this logic but whatever.
I don't get it either. Makes way more sense to start integrating players against a bad team like the Suns, than a game that will be a dogfight.

Looks like Steven Adams bumped him and he stumbled down under Jimmy Butler. All the other plays don't appear to have a redeeming basketball merit.

Would be catastrophic if Kornet turns out to be more injury prone than anyone suspected. I'm starting to get worried.
He just started being a regular rotation player in the '22-'23 season, but had played 63, 69, and 73 games in the 3 seasons he has been. Not sure how much was injury and how much was dnp in the first couple.

For those wanting Dillon on our ear so he won't injure our players, I'd say I'm thinking that guy will be suspended from the NBA sooner than later. Can't believe he's still playing.

Like many I'm wondering when Kornet and Fox will play again.

Yeah super annoying. Why not bring one or two back for reduced minutes. Even just 10 minutes would at least give them some game time with teammates.

You know what? I almost forgot this feeling, counting down hours until the tip-off.
I know we've been spoiled as a fanbase, but watching all those horrible teams over the past years made me question my sanity.

I still can't fully accept Spurs are legit again and I'm waiting for an implosion to happen. :st-lol:

I think you undervalue the importance of Barnes.

Yes, he's technically an expiring contract and by so valuable in a trade but I find him even more valuable in the locker room full of youngsters and on the floor with his bbiq and overall reliability that you don't get with young players.

I'd love a (friendly of course) extension for him

Barnes is the perfect vet, man. He's won at the highest level, has a good heart and great with the community, durable, plus he can still ball (may have lost a wee bit of step but still more or less solid).

His playing time has bumped compared to his 15min average in Boston

Considering his importance as a backup AND duo with Wemby, it's almost expected that he'll be more injured

We need another big or tall wing asap considering how useless Biyombo is

He should not be starting. He’s both a weak rebounder and defender. If he’s kept in a Patty towel waving locker room guy, fine.

This is all setting up for the Spurs to go undefeated and then when anyone of these guys come back and we lose we'll have to deal with the inevitable "I told you we are better without [player]!" But to be fair, it might be me saying it if it's Sochan :st-lol:
This tbh. Also when fox return i expect people blaming him when castle or harper play bad. Saying his a detrimental on castle and harpe’s development.

Things I'm thinking about ahead of today's game:
  • Maluach has only played "real" minutes (meaning regular rotation non-garbage time) in one game so far... this might be a candidate for another. Will be interesting to get a look at him against an elite opposing center.
  • A favorite of this group, Rasheer Fleming, is also not getting any run in Phoenix so far... with Brooks out, does that open a door?
  • Mark Williams has been playing well... he and Wemby have actually never faced off before.
  • Keldon does well against Phoenix. He obviously had that one steal and game winner on KD, but in the 22-23 season when Keldon was our #1 scoring option, Keldon scored 27 and 34 against PHX in the only two games he played. The next season (Wemby's rookie year) he had 27 in the first game against them on Oct 31. I've got an eye out on @OK Computer's man
  • I have a feeling we're gonna see a nice game from Black Falcon...
  • I want to see Steph on DBook all game.
  • I'm always afraid of some bullshit like Grayson Allen going for a career high on us... let's not have that, k?
