Game Thread Spurs (39-16) vs Kings (12-45) (Sat 02/21/26) [7:00 PM CST]

Would be nice to beat Detroit on Monday since the next time they play them will be the first game back in SA; teams generally lose their first home game after long road trips tbh.

Win against Detroit will help win Wemby some votes for MVP against Cade
As much as Wemby and Cade deserve MVP consideration, its still Jokic/SGA's to lose tbh. Whether you consider it justified or not, the incumbent players tend to get the nod over new candidates.

I agree to some extent....I think overall win loss record will matter and it will swing the votes.

Assuming Jokic, SGA, Cade, Wemby all met the 65 games requirement.

Argument for Jokic not getting MVP = Voter fatigue....he already has 3 MVPs. And being a 3rd seed or worst (assuming at season end), I don't think will help his case despite his insane number. Last year he also had 1 of the insane stats in history but still lose to SGA (OKC running away with 68 wins).

Argument for SGA not getting MVP = It would depend if OKC maintain their 1st seed. I am not sure if the voters will give SGA back-to-back MVPs if OKC record regress (from 1st seed last year to 2nd seed this year).

So if Spurs and Pistons can get the first seed respectively, I think Cade and Wemby still have a great chance....Both Cade and Wemby are more or less with the same situation....bottom of the league 2 years ago and now is fighting for top seed in respective conference. I think it all boil down to

- Spurs vs Pistons: The 2 regular season game matchup records
- Their team overall record and
- Quality of Cade's teammates vs Wemby's teammates. Who carried their team more...
- And of course the "popularity" of Cade and Wemby.

I was at the game and sat behind the Kings bench. Here are some of my observations.

- Sweeney was very animated and leading the huddles in the first part of timeouts in the 4th quarter while Mitch was on the floor with the other coaches. Seems like Sean has a lot of energy and passion. The D noticeably tightened in the 4th.

- Fox was extremely aggressive with Westbrook, seemed personal. Also, Fox is so crazy quick and fast. You heard it here first.

- Monk tried to sub himself in during the 2nd quarter heater Sac went on. Christie motioned for him to go back to the bench. Monk was yelling at Christie and told him he was fucking stupid while yapping away at the end of the bench.

- Got some small bits of intel. They have high hopes for Plumlee and he’s two weeks away from being ready. Mason is a high character guy and should be on the playoff roster. Also, Biyombo is the greatest dude and very valuable locker room guy.

- Lastly, the Spurs had to get rid of the “kids” and that the improved skill and IQ forced this to happen. The direct quote was “teams don’t win with players like that.” I’ll leave it to you to figure out who the kids were.

When this team locks in on D pretty fun to see. Now we need to put Detroit on notice.
We need more games in Austin if we’re going to get scoop like this

All signs point to him wanting to play in Sacramento.
Surely the Spurs would have taken him. He must have for sure asked not to be drafted by them because he wanted to stay in California.

Agreed. This was the word around that draft. Raynaud is French but committed to Stanford in 2021 and I think he has been living in Northern California since then and fell in love with the area or something (can't blame him).

Word was he wanted to be picked by SAC to stay in that region which would change how teams like San Antonio approached drafting him to respect his wishes. That's different context and not a missed scout imho but I agree with everyone who wanted him for SA he looked promising at the time and has been solid.
Thanks for explain this. Seems like this is what happened.

Phenomenal work from @ginobilized. Are you allowed to say where you got those scoops from without naming anyone (I'm guessing not)?

Great win last night and good work from the BaselineB members that went to the game. Awesome reports on some behind the scenes stuff about the interaction between players that those of us watching on TV wouldn't be able to see any of that stuff. Thanks for the reports.

The first 3 quarters they acted somewhat uninterested and going through the motions. However, in the 4th, they finally decided to lay the smacketh down on their rooty poo candy asses.

I feel Victor got cheated out of a block. They gave him 4, I swear I saw another that he didn't get credit for.

Some other bits from last night I forgot to share.

- I arrived early and was watching the pre-warmup shoot-around. First thing that hit me was that Keldon is very big. Doesn't translate on TV the burliness of his frame is significant. He had a ferocious windmill dunk I'd never seen from him in a game. Also, his half-hook bank shots are lethal and he was hitting some 10-12 feet from the hoop during the game while taking significant contact. Teams will need to game-plan for him in the playoffs big time.

- Vassell's vibe is all business and his role-player skill makes him invisible and impactful at the same time. Exactly what you want out of a 4th option. He was also quick to re-focus Harper for some of his errant plays and passes. He was really functioning like a vet with a winning pedigree.

- Wemby is barking defensive coverages loudly and constantly. That alone is an elite skill to have on a team. The team still misses him rolling to the hoop a LOT. As usual, I counted more than 4 blocks. 5 or 6 by my eye. Wemby was controlling the glass in a way I hadn't seen in person yet. He just covers a section and the Kings just gave up on crashing that section. Looked like Wilt black and white footage. I think the coaches and players are only beginning to figure out how to play with him and re-work the geometry of previous schemes to fit him.

- Apparently, and understandably, CB's entire family is top-notch and well-respected in the organization.

- Just going off of his energy from a distance, Sean Sweeney seems like a coach that I'd love to have played for. Will be interesting to see how things shake out with him. The team really responded to him in the 4th quarter defense.

- Kornet didn't look righ physically. Was so slow and waddling up court. Seemed like there might be some back issues.

- Oh, this is juicy. There were jackals in full costume going to each section to teach everyone how to clap when the clock got to 35 seconds before tipoff. This felt so European and Wemby is a genius for starting this tradition. My section got a shirtless viking dude with horns and a cape. So fun!

- Lastly, the cohesion of this squad is so tight. I could sense that Sochan was the last guy who didn't fit the chemistry/family puzzle that is being built. It's a very different vibe than Pop's teams. It's a new culture and seems akin to OKC in cohesion.

No sauces will ever be shared, btw.

Definitely. That foul on DeRozan's dunk attempt looked like a suspect call in real time. Haven't gone back and looked. Wemby gets a fingertip on a bunch of shots that don't get counted.

You and me both. He got the three quick ones, then thought there was another in the first and one in the second half. Would have been another 4 x 5 game for Vic.
