Game Thread Spurs (25-11) vs Lakers (23-11) (Wed 01/07/26) [8:30PM CST] on ESPN

The trolling didn’t seem to help when we were winning 20 games a year. Can’t imagine it helps now either.

Be a top seed. Win your game and move on. That kind of stuff is for teams like Orlando, looking for some kind of edge. We have plenty of edges.

I think Wemby is a good, not great rebounder. He just happens to be 7'5 with a 16-foot wingspan, so that tends to help.
I do think he's a bit better than good, though not a "great" rebounder yet in the sense of all-timers like Rodman. The fact that other lengthy players like Holmgren are averaging nearly merely half Vic's average is telling in that regard. On top of his length, his motor is really underrated.

IMO his rebounding has improved tremendously this year and the stats back it up. His DRB% is up to 35.1% from 29.8% last season and his TRB% of 21.3% is up from 17.7% last year. He leads the league in DRB%, but it only 76th% in ORB%, which I think is more a function of the way he plays offense than anything else.

Yeah as we know he still more or less prefers to operate outside the paint on O at this point.

Holy shit, I didn’t realize his other foot was still on the ground until I saw this angle
That's super impressive. I thought he at least jumped up a bit. That's crazy flexibility for a guy his size.

I've seen a (I think he was 5'11") guy that was dunker back in the day (late 90s/early 2000s) kick the ball when it's stuck between the rim and the backboard with his foot. Kadour Ziani is his name. He's probably late 40s by now, but the guy had an insane vertical. I think he was part of the dunkers on the European Slam Nation team (can't remember the exact name of what is was called). He was able to leap up and kick the ball from the rim. Victor and him are both impressive in their own way.

KJ the only one that wants to ball lately.

Vic refining that middy gets me pumped.

Castle decided to be Castle in the 4th on O muscling to the basket, after looking scared the first 3 Qs. Encouraging to see. Good D throughout the game on Luka, didn’t get overly aggressive.

Jeremy with solid minutes including 2/2 3s! Solid D on Luka too. Anyone vs Luka is gonna get embarrassed every now and then, but if you can make him brick a few shots especially in the 4th that’s a dub.

Danny Green walked so Champ’s 2pt game could run. Really enjoying the rapid progression from Champ there.

Would love to see Kornet develop more of a mid range floater vs relying entirely on under the basket. Saw a flash of that last night.

I'm not sure if people have been mentioning it, but yes, I am loving the Victor mid-range shot/Victor working from the mid-range area. It's been awesome.

Call me crazy, but I agree with giving Sochan minutes. I feel he's been humbled, but has kept a decent to good attitude with the benching. I want to see the Spurs give him minutes in the rotation up to the trade deadline. 1. He could play well and increase his trade value 2. He could play well and the Spurs decide to keep him for the rest of the season (maybe he could provide a spark for the Spurs to go on a run in the second half of the regular season). 3. Then the gamble is, he could play bad and decrease his trade value. I'd be willing to take that gamble, though.

Julian's been playing well and I hope he keeps it up. I used to not like seeing him go inside, but he's getting better at it. That means he's continuing to work on his game, and that's great if he can add a little more to his three point shooting. I've really loved his rebounding too. I'm interested in starting him in HB's spot if HB can't get it together and/or if the Spurs can't get a replacement PF to move HB to the bench, I'd be willing to give Julian a shot at it. I loved seeing Julian shove JV after the Sochan altercation too. Looks like Julian's a real stand-up guy sticking up for his teammates.

I really wonder why Kornet can't shoot anymore. I remember the broadcast team (maybe it was Jacob) mention it a while ago, that he was a shooter early in his career (which people here already knew) and then had some sort of upper body injury (shoulder maybe?) and he stopped shooting from the outside. First time I'd heard that as the reason.

Dammit hate watching national broadcasts involving the Lakers so had it on Sean and Jacob.
Darn. I didn't know the Spurs had their broadcast crew for the game. I watched the ESPN one. Normally, when I check on NBALP on one of these national TV games, there's no home or away broadcast. I didn't check this time and now I see there was the option to watch the Spurs broadcast. That sucks. I thought when NBC, ESPN, Prime etc. do the broadcasts, I thought there was no home or away broadcasts. Do Sean and Jacob normally get those games off? For games earlier in the season, I didn't see an option to choose between them, so I didn't check this time.
